Stage Door: Audra's Toes, "Sweeney Peron", Busch's Hepburn and "Big Fish"

4 November 2011 3:19 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Audra McDonald rehearsing for "Porgy & Bess"Theater geeks who read The Film Experience (there be crossover!) might have been wondering what happened to the stage door column. The truth is we just haven't been seeing much. This is never a question of "nothing to see" but always a matter of finances and for one quarter of each year the the not-so-small matter of Oscar Mania keeping us busy with pre-recorded actors instead of live ones. But when I'm not seeing it I enjoy it vicariously through avid theatergoing friends and through blogs. My favorite is The Broadway Blog so if you're into theater, check it out. Here's four quick film / theater crossover tidbits I wanted to share.

Audra in Rampart

I practically shrieked with surprised delight when Broadway baby Audra McDonald showed up in Oren Moverman's Rampart. She just kills her one scene role as Woody Harrelson's latest conquest. »

Blu-ray Review: Stake Land – Not Just Another Vampire Flick

16 October 2011 11:58 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

From the earliest days of cinema the vampire film has formed a rich heritage in which it has evolved with the times mirroring the fears of each decade and capturing the imagination of audiences. With its in-built folklore there are few people who are unfamiliar with the iconography of the genre.

Vampires have never been as popular as they are now, particularly with the successes of the Twilight Saga, Let The Right One In and TV shows True Blood and The Vampire Diaries showing there are many ways to approach the subject. Director Jim Mickle, with this only his second feature film following his directorial debut Mulberry Street, has attempted to put a fresh spin on the genre by adding a post-apocalyptic setting for his film Stake Land, released on Blu-ray and DVD today.

Stake Land

Stars: Connor Paolo, Nick Damici, Danielle Harris, Kelly McGillis, Sean Nelson, Michael Cerveris | Written by Jim Mickle, Nick Damici | Directed by Jim Mickle

Does it need pointing out that vampires are in vogue right now? It seems like one can’t move these days without stumbling upon a new film, television programme or book featuring nasty bloodsucking beasties.  And as I mentioned in my Priest review, post-apocalyptic movies aren’t exactly in short supply either. So to be faced with a post-apocalyptic-vampire movie is to be faced with what could well be an overfamiliar if not dull affair. But Stake Land, despite its less than original trappings, is not a movie to be hastily overlooked.

Following a vampire epidemic (which is left unexplained), much of civilised America has been destroyed and abandoned. What little remains of humanity exists in small, isolated and increasingly desperate communities. It is in »

Blu-Ray Review: Horror Fans Must Take the Trip to ‘Stake Land’

4 August 2011 1:18 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Forget “Zombieland,” “Stake Land” is a much scarier place to be. Jim Mickle’s smart, atmospheric vampire thriller has been given a stellar Blu-ray treatment from Dark Sky Films and is quite simply the horror HD release of the year so far. Horror fans are often (justifiably) complaining about the current state of the drama but “Stake Land” should silence them for at least a few days.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

Stake Land” is a confident, smart piece of filmmaking that will surely find a much-wider audience on Blu-ray and DVD than it did in its very-brief theatrical release (where it made a shockingly-small $23k Total). It’s an incredibly-promising film from a talented director and I hope that it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle. This is the kind of release that I think could suffer the most from the death of the local video store. I should I »

Stake Land

Written by Jim Mickle and Nick Damici

Directed by Jim Mickle

USA, 2010

A recent 60 Minutes report puts forth a startling figure: thanks to the high unemployment rate, soon 25% of all children in the United States will be living under the poverty line, many of them resorting to temporary shelter to survive. With the spectre of economic collapse – or at least sustained calamity – haunting anyone who pays enough attention to current events in this hemisphere, the post-apocalyptic narrative might well be an increasingly resonant one. That goes double for Jim Mickle’s Stake Land, a post-collapse vampire fable whose cultural landscape is eerily familiar.

Martin (Connor Paolo), not unlike the kids in the above story, grew up amidst newly emerged hard times. As his stoic narration tells it (and a flashback soon confirms), his parents were gruesomely murdered by the deformed vampires (commonly referred to as “vamps”) who sprang »

Claybourne Elder Wows New York With Tennessee Tour de Force

21 June 2011 10:13 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

In the New Group and Tectonic Theater Project’s Off-Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ One Arm, Claybourne Elder plays Ollie, a chiseled and charming young Navy boxer, and he’s a total knockout in the role.

The 6-foot-1 out actor from Springville, Utah, pulls no punches in depicting how Ollie loses his right arm in an auto accident and then turns to a life of prostitution and prison. Based on Williams’ 1940s short story and 1967 unproduced screenplay, One Arm has been lovingly adapted into an 85-minute one-act and championed by another theatrical heavyweight: Moisés Kaufman.

Kaufman, the openly gay, Tony- and Emmy-nominated writer/director (33 Variations and The Laramie Project), says One Arm is “one of the frankest portrayals of the homosexual world that Tennessee lived in. And that made me want to do it. For the most part, gay characters in »

Stake Land review

16 June 2011 8:29 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Stake Land brings the undead back to the big screen, and doesn't do too bad a job, either. Here's Mark's review...

After the largely overlooked box office bomb, Priest, 2011's second helping of vampires, religion and Western tropes comes in the grimy package of Stake Land, an indie horror film that's worlds away from Scott Stewart's film.

Although there's a substantial amount of thoughtfulness in this film and its world-building, it's entirely irresistible to compare the film to 2009's zom-edy, Zombieland. This is partly because of the narration, partly because of the characters, but mostly because the monsters are bloody zombies.

Let's be generous and say that the film's monsters are, at least, an unholy hybrid of vampires and zombies, nicknamed "vamps", which have overtaken most of America's population. Mister, played by Nick Damici, is a vampire hunter who lives a Spartan existence, trekking across the devastated States in constant vigilance. »

Danielle Harris defends herself against post-apocalyptic vampires in Stake Land.

Directed and co-written by Jim Mickle (Mulberry Street), Stake Land finds America being overrun by an epidemic of vampirism, similar to Daybreakers. With cities falling apart and a slowly dwindling population of humans on the run from a growing number of vicious vampires, the future isn’t looking too bright in Stake Land.
