[DVD Review] Sondheim! The Birthday Concert

17 December 2010 11:50 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

I feel that before I start my review, I need to give a brief overview of Stephen Sondheim and his influence on musical theater. Sadly, I know that just by saying “musical theater,” many people have already tuned out and moved on with their lives. They should be paying attention, though. His work broke down barriers in American entertainment and made audiences rethink love, relationships, and the traditional idea of heroes and villains. If you care about film, television, comics, or any other art form, you should care about Stephen Sondheim, and Sondheim! The Birthday Concert shows just how much he has changed songwriting and storytelling.

For those who do not know Stephen Sondheim by name, it is likely that you recognize some of his work. He wrote the lyrics for West Side Story. He wrote the oft sung and parodied “Send in the Clowns” as well as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses, »

If you're a fan of old school radio horror like The Weird Circle, Lights Out!, Sleep No More, The Hermit's Cave, there's a new treasure trove of horrific stories being told by some of today's best filmmakers and actors called Tales from Beyond the Pale that is just waiting to keep you up at night!

We've got an exclusive look at the artwork for this week's episode, Paul Solet's "The Conformation". Solet received numerous awards for his short films before writing and directing his highly lauded first feature, Grace, in 2008. Since its premiere at Sundance ‘09, where two men in the audience passed out from the intensity of the film, Grace has played at festivals all around the globe, including SXSW, Brussels, and Gerardmer, where it won the prestigious Prix du Jury.

Review: 'Sondheim! A Birthday Celebration'

28 November 2010 4:37 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

You are no doubt wondering why ComicMix is reviewing Sondheim! The Birthday Celebration, the DVD edition of the 80th birthday celebration that aired this past week on PBS. Believe it or not, we believe in covering significant events in popular culture, not just the fads and the celebrities, but people who have made contributions that have proved influential to today’s creators. Stephen Sondheim, for over fifty years, has been elevating the musical theater art form, and his music and lyrics have found their way into books, film, and yes, comic books.

Musical theater in America came into its own in 1927 with Showboat, co-written by Jerome Kern with book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Its next evolutionary step came with Oklahoma in 1943, from Hammerstein and Richard Rogers. Living down the hall from the lyricist was a young boy named Stephen Sondheim. Their relationship helped Sondheim develop his ear for music and lyrics, »

Today, we are excited to bring you a sweet-looking poster promoting the upcoming episode “British and Proud” from the new horror radio series Tales from Beyond the Pale.  The series is a nice throwback to the classic horror radio shows of Alfred Hitchock, Orson Welles, and Peter Lorre.  There will be ten episodes this season and each episode will only be available through their official website ($1.99 by Paypal or credit card), but will soon be downloadable from iTunes, Amazon, and other online retailers.  “British and Proud” airs tomorrow and it’s from Simon Rumley whose new film Red White & Blue recently played at Fantastic Fest.

After the jump, I’ve included Gary Pullin’s new poster as well as the one he did last week for “Man on a Ledge” which was by Joe Maggio (Bitter Feast) with Vincent D’onofrio (Full Metal Jacket).  Pullin is doing a poster for each of the ten episodes. »

Fantastic Fest 2010: Stake Land Review

6 October 2010 7:01 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Sometimes you take a premise and wring it for all it’s worth and you add some soul, humor, great casting, and gritty action to give it the right flavor. That’s exactly what the post-apocalyptic vampire road movie Stake Land does, as director Jim Mickle takes Nick Damici’s script and fine-tunes the narrative enough to elevate it above a simple romp through vampire infested back roads and really connect with the audience. The biggest draw will be the different classes of vampires Stake Land introduces, but even the retreaded portions of the film are executed so well that the end result is better than the sum of its parts. Hit the jump for my full review and why this was my favorite film of the entire festival.

We are dropped into the middle of a post-apocalyptic world where vampires run amok after a virus of some sort has quickly spread through the world. »

The Makers of "Stake Land" on Raising the Stakes of the Vampire Film

27 September 2010 12:29 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

It's been a wild week for the cast and crew of "Stake Land," who wasted no time after enjoying the triumph of winning the Midnight Madness Audience Award at this year's Toronto Film Festival to hopping on a plane to Fantastic Fest where they were greeted with similar applause during their premiere in Austin Saturday night. Such a quick turnaround might be considered an anomaly for the vampire film of late, an unusual take on the genre that's meant to be savored rather than devoured, a road movie set against the harsh backdrop of the bitter American northwest after a virus has turned much of the world into bloodsuckers.

Inspired by westerns like "The Searchers," director Jim Mickle and writer/star Nick Damici wanted to do some vast after last working together on the claustrophobic zombie flick "Mulberry Street" in 2006 and in fact, it would be easy to say they've »

Check out this still of Top Gun star Kelly McGillis getting her vampire on in the new horror film Stake Land.

McGillis was a super sex symbol back in the 80s when she did 'It' with a very young Tom Cruise in the men-without-shirts, Val Kilmer-costarring action movie Top Gun. Those were the days, man. Now McGillis is back! She hasn't been in a theatrical feature for over d ecade, but she's in this new horror film. McGillis plays a nun caught in a crisis of faith who joins forces with vicious vampire-hunters Martin (Connor Paolo) and Nick Damici (he starred in Jane Campion's serial killer flick In the Cut.
