The best documentaries of 2011

25 December 2011 2:35 PM, PST | blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news »

Why not fold documentaries into my list of the "Best Films of 2011?" After all, a movie is a movie, right? Yes, and some years I've thrown them all into the same mixture. But all of these year-end Best lists serve one useful purpose: They tell you about good movies you may not have seen or heard about. The more films on my list that aren't on yours, the better job I've done.

That's particularly true were you to depend on the "short list" released by the Academy's Documentary Branch of 15 films they deem eligible for nomination. The branch has been through turmoil in the past and its procedures were "reformed" at one point. But this year it has made a particularly scandalous sin of

omission. It doesn't include "The Interrupters" (currently scoring 99% on the Tomatometer), which has received better reviews and been on more critic's Best lists than any other. »

'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' Teaser Trailer Surfaces

8 December 2011 9:44 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

When it comes to recent animated film franchises, I find the Madagascar films about as uninteresting as I do the Shrek films. Sure, the penguins are funny, the monkeys are good for a few laughs, but the overall stories are terrible. I truly disliked the first Madagascar film and admittedly found the sequel to be a vast improvement, but I have little desire to return to the franchise for Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, which hits theaters on June 8, 2012 and today we have our first look at the teaser trailer. Written by Noah Baumbach (Fantastic Mr. Fox) and once again featuring the voice work of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric The Entertainer and Andy Richter, Madagascar 3 follows Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo and Melman the Giraffe as they continue their struggle to get home to their »

Larry Crowne - Blu-ray Review

I guess we were expecting better of Larry since it starred two major movie stars. Its crime may be not living up to expectations, not that it wasn.t entirely unsuccessful. There.s just something about it that doesn.t jibe in today.s financial times. Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) is a happy, go-getting employee at U-mart (Read: Target and Wal-mart). He thinks that he.s being called into the break room to get another employee of the month title, but what he discovers is that he.s being laid off for his lack of college degree. Blu-ray Review: Unfunny ‘Larry Crowne’ Patronizes Middle-Class Moviegoers

15 November 2011 5:17 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Larry Crowne” is a would-be crowd-pleaser that’s filled to the brim with chipper laughter. It’s the sort of laughter often heard on morning news programs, where overpaid anchors giggle and quip while laughing all the way to the bank. Yet very little of “Crowne’”s onscreen gaiety transfers to the bored, mildly annoyed audiences paying to sit through the self-congratulatory drivel.

Director/co-writer/star Tom Hanks has clearly lost touch with what made him the most appealing actor in American cinema during the ’90s. He hasn’t had a truly great star vehicle since 2000’s “Cast Away,” and his once effortless charisma feels more mannered and forced than it did a decade ago. Yet that’s not the real problem here. The patronizing depiction of middle class downsizing scripted by Hanks and “Big Fat Greek Wedding” one-hit wonder Nia Vardalos is what sinks the whole show.
