Trailer For Cedric The Entertainer’s Directorial Debut, “Chicago Pulaski Jones”

21 December 2010 7:19 PM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

Like Michael Jai White in my post just below this one, comedian/actor Cedric The Entertainer has also jumped to the other side of the camera, as director, for a film called Chicago Pulaski Jones, his directorial debut.

The film which stars Kel Mitchell, Tommy Davidson, Affion Crockett, and Cedric himself (amongst many others), centers on a young championship dancer seeking fame & fortune, who is forced to avenge the death of his uncle. If that reads like it’s a drama or thriller, get that out of your head, because, from the trailer below (and with this cast) it’s obviously a comedy.

I couldn’t find much else on it. IMDb says it’s been in the works since 2008, and looks like it’s completed, with a 2010 release planned; however, I couldn’t find it anywhere; not on Netflix or Amazon. And it certainly hasn’t been released in theaters. »

Next week is when hopeful screenwriters who've had one of their scripts circulate the respective production houses are hoping that their screenplay gets a couple of extra bites. Now in it's sixth year, it'll also be a time when curious onlookers such as film executives, development people, agents and hardcore cinephiles take a gather at a list that emphasizes quality and original writing. blcklst.com has been all spruced up for the occasion --- so you should definitely check back there to see what 2010 will reveal -- and if you're like us and like to revisit Best of Lists of the previous years. Last year over 300 executives contributed their opinion to make up a Black List that had a Muppet Movie (not the Jason Segel project) in the number one spot and The Social Network at number 2. Lee Daniels Eyeing 'The Scottsboro Boys' Musical For A Feature Film

3 December 2010 11:13 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Lee Daniels seems to be taking his time in choosing a followup to last year's leftfield Oscar contender, "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire." For a while, it looked like all things were go on the civil rights drama "Selma." It had a killer cast lined up that included Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson, David Oyelowo, Ray Winstone, Robert De Niro and Cedric the Entertainer but it couldn't manage to get the financing together, as the film got further and further pushed back until now, it appears to be off the map altogether. Lee Daniels Needs to Choose Between Two Civil Rights-Themed Films: Selma and The Butler

2 September 2010 12:26 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The last time we had a check-in on Selma, the civil rights picture director Lee Daniels spent much of 2010 preparing to make, financing was an issue. The director had a script and a cast (Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson, David Oyelowo, Robert De Niro, Cedric the Entertainer) but money was a problem. Then he was signed to rewrite and direct The Butler, and it seemed like Selma might go away. But, as it turns out, the financing for Selma is now in place. And so, having two civil rights-themed films set up, Daniels is faced with a choice: Selma, or The Butler? Daniels told BlackVoices (via Reuters) that money was never an issue, and that Selma is now set to go, should be want to do it: The script is in, the actors are there, some of them are stars. The money is there, it's just a matter of whether I'm »

New Favorite Person: Manny From Modern Family

This kid is killing us. Rico Rodriguez, who plays Manny on Modern Family, may not have had glitz and sparkle like his TV mom, Sofia Vergara, but he was dressed to the nines last night and made quite an impression on us anyway. Wearing an outfit that fell somewhere between Nathan Detroit and Cedric The Entertainer, this kid stole the show when the Modern Family cast took the stage to accept their Emmy for Best Comedy Series. Check out some additional adorable pics of Rico celebrating (and fighting over) the Emmy with his cast mates below. [Photos: Getty Images] »

Hugh Jackman will not be the Avon Man for 20th Century FoxHugh Jackman has bowed out of the upcoming comedy Avon Man, which we reported he joined last July. Deadline New York is reporting that he will still be attached as a producer of the film, which Kevin Lima is directing for Fox.

The site also reports that Jackman's Avon Man departure is a likely indicator that he is prepping to step back into his Wolverine role for the sequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2. Christopher McQuarrie wrote the script for the sequel and, while no director has been attached as of yet, it was believed that Fox is getting the film ready to go into production next year.

Avon Man was scheduled to start shooting in October and the site indicated that producers have started reaching out to other actors to fill in for Jackman. They still plan on making »

The TV show that no one watches

8 August 2010 8:16 AM, PDT | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

I have to admit that I don’t really know who this Trey Songz joker is. I know he’s some singer who’s currently popular with the ladies, though his name reminds me of that funny bit by Cedric The Entertainer about adult black men who go around with these silly, made up, childish names, instead of acting like a “grown ass man” and using their real God given names.

Anyway Bet thought he was popular enough and came to the conclusion that it was a good idea to give Mr. Songz (if I can call him that) his own reality show, My Moment, which premiered in June.

Have you heard of it? I sure haven’t, but I don’t watch Bet anyway. And obviously neither has anyone else since the  ratings for the show have been dropping like a rock, and last week it got 0.461 million viewers, »

Lee Daniels Directing ‘Butler’ While Waiting On ‘Selma’; Denzel Washington Approached

1 August 2010 9:27 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Let this be a lesson that even after you are nominated for multiple Oscars and have a big financial success it is difficult to get financing for a film. Lee Daniels is learning this after his Civil Rights drama Selma is struggling to get everything in order. Everyone from Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson, David Oyelowo, Ray Winstone, Robert De Niro and Cedric the Entertainer have been attached at one point. In the meantime Deadline is reporting that he “has closed a deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment to rewrite and direct The Butler.”

The project is based on “Eugene Allen…a servant in the White House over 34 years, Allen watched the eight presidents he worked for wrestle with and finally stem the tide of segregation. The film is based on a series of articles written on Butler by Wil Haygood. After Haygood’s first article, the long-retired Allen was invited to »

Lee Daniels Set To Do 'The Butler'

1 August 2010 7:54 AM, PDT | AMC - Script to Screen | See recent AMC - Script to Screen news »

According to Deadline, Lee Daniels ("Precious") is set to rewrite and direct "The Butler" for Sony Pictures.

The movie follows the true story of Eugene Allen, a black man who served as a White House butler for 34 years. Allen watched the eight presidents he worked for wrestle with and finally stem the tide of segregation.

Based on Wil Haygood’s Washington Post article, Danny Strong ("Recount") penned the first draft of the script, which Daniels will re-write.

Sources tell the site that Daniels has gone as far as approach Denzel Washington about the title role--if "Selma" doesn't finally get its funding together quickly. "Selma" is supposedly Daniels next project about the famous march that led to Civil Rights reform in the country, which stars Hugh Jackman, David Oyelowo, Liam Neeson, and Cedric the Entertainer.

Director Lee Daniels May Put Selma on Hold in Favor of The Butler

30 July 2010 11:26 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

While director Lee Daniels (Precious) had put together a terrific cast for the historical drama Selma, the inability to find financing for the film may push the Oscar-nominee to make The Butler, another African American-centered historical drama, his next project.  Butler centers on the real-life story of Eugene Allen, a servant in the White House over 34 years, who watched the eight presidents he worked for wrestle with and finally stem the tide of segregation.  The first draft of the script was written by Recount screenwriter (and Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum) Danny Strong, but Daniels will immediately begin re-writing it if decides to do the picture before SelmaThe Butler has almost solidified financing from The Weinstein Company, Pathe, and Skyline Pictures.  Deadline reports that filming could begin as early as this fall and Daniels has reportedly approached Denzel Washington about playing Allen.

Lee Daniels Signs On For White House Drama “The Butler” (”Selma” May Not Happen)

30 July 2010 11:04 AM, PDT | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

I thought funding was Selma was already as good as secured? Lee Daniels is Still reportedly looking for money to get production underway on the Civil Rights-set drama, which already has much of its core cast attached (Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson, David Oyelowo, Ray Winstone, Cedric the Entertainer, Lenny Kravitz). Jackman is said to have even gained 30 pounds for his part as Sheriff Jim Clark, only to lose it to star in Real Steel, when financing for Selma hadn’t come together as expected.

It just reminded me that I have a copy of a draft of the script, which I’ve yet to read, but probably should! There might be reasons why financing is proving to be a bigger challenge than expected. I thought Daniels had officially been accepted into “the club,” with all the success he enjoyed with Precious. For a moment, it seemed he was to become Hollywood’s golden boy, »

Hollywoodnews.com: Is “Glee” a little too grown up for your youngest kids? Is Big Time Rush on Nickelodeon a bit too goofy for your taste? If you are looking for a new mix of adolescence and music for your family, then you might want to check out Stewart Raffill’s “Standing Ovation” when it opens in theaters this Friday, July 16.

The family musical, distributed by Rocky Mountain Pictures, follows five junior high school friends who form a singing group called The 5 Ovations to compete in a national music video contest. It’s their goal to win a cash prize of one million dollars. Standing in their way, however, is rival singing group The Wiggies — five rich, talented and unscrupulous sisters who along with their parents, will stop at nothing to win the competition.

Actors Casting Directors Love: Part 2

Robin Lippin on Gerard Butler: I was casting "Attila," the miniseries, and it was an extremely hard role. We had to find someone who could carry the mini and have charisma and yet be able to exude leadership and a barbaric quality. He also had to have an amazing body and good looks (it is TV, after all). Gerry had been referred by the CD in London, and I brought him in. I felt he had it all, but the executive at the time wasn't convinced. He wanted me to keep looking and told me to go to Crunch, the gym where all the hotties worked out. I wanted to die. I mean, this was a powerful role and needed an amazing actor. I think the exec was worried about his accent.I fought really hard for him, and luckily the director and producers were behind him. I even offered to »

Happy 12th Birthday Malia Obama! You & America Had A Joint Party At The White House This Weekend!

Did Michelle strategically give birth to daughter Malia on the nation’s birthday?

All jokes aside, President Obama’s adorable little girl Malia celebrated her birthday in style. The first family celebrated Malia’s 12th birthday, as well as the 234th birthday of our nation, on the South Lawn of the White House on July 4 with a huge barbecue. More than 1,200 active-military men and women stopped by for cake!

The party was filled with traditional Fourth of July staples, including hamburgers and hot dogs galore! And what would a birthday party be without amazing entertainment? The Associated Press reports that rocker Brandi Carlile, The Killers, Cedric the Entertainer and the U.S. Marine Band all performed for her big day.

The President addressed partygoers, saying: “Now, of course I’ll admit that the backyard’s a little bigger here, but it’s the same spirit. Michelle and I couldn’t »
