The Rolling Stones in ‘C—sucker Blues’: a verité gas, gas, gas

21 July 2016 12:48 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

There is hardly such thing as an underground movie anymore — except, perhaps, for the ones that have to go underground because they aren’t allowed to be shown. The rough, grainy, outlaw king of those is “C—sucker Blues.” Not because you can never see it, but because on the rare occasions when you can, it has acquired the aura of an unholy testament: the ultimate down and dirty peek behind the curtain of 1970s rock & roll excess. It’s the time capsule that keeps on giving because it’s still semi-buried.

In 1972, the Rolling Stones recruited photographer Robert Frank to shoot a fly-on-the-wall film of their up-and-coming U.S. tour after the release of “Exile on Main Street.” Frank had created the extraordinary cover art for “Exile,” that tawdry collage of photographs that merged the Stones in all their let-it-loose glory with an homage to the rootsy mysteries of Americana. »

Dick Cavett Talks Making Breakfast for Muhammad Ali

6 June 2016 1:46 PM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

For 48 years, Dick Cavett has never quite figured out how a former standup comic from the Midwest got to be such good friends with Muhammad Ali, the legendary boxer who died last Friday at age 74. The former late-night host and heavyweight champion were close in age (Cavett is five years older) and had a mutual admiration for each other. They also shared the same kind of dry wit, Cavett reveals – and pulled as many pranks on each other as they shared home-cooked meals. Cavett tells Rolling Stone that he will »

The Graduate

27 February 2016 12:09 PM, PST | Trailers from Hell | See recent Trailers from Hell news »

What can you say to such success? Mike Nichols and Buck Henry's sex satire defined 'the generation gap' for the sixties. Dustin Hoffman sprang forward from obscurity and Katharine Ross was the object of California desire. Anne Bancroft's Mrs. Robinson freed the image of the 'complicated woman' from the clutches of the Production Code Stone Age. The broad comedy scores with every joke, and there's a truth beneath all the odd things that ought not to work. The Graduate Blu-ray The Criterion Collection 800 1967 / Color / 2:35 widescreen / 106 min. / available through The Criterion Collection / Street Date February 23, 2016 / 39.95 Starring Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman, Katharine Ross, William Daniels, Murray Hamilton, Elizabeth Wilson, Buck Henry, Brian Avery, Walter Brooke, Norman Fell, Alice Ghostley, Marion Lorne, Eddra Gale, Richard Dreyfuss, Mike Farrell, Elisabeth Fraser, Donald F. Starman’s Tao: David Bowie in His Own Words, Throughout the Golden Years

12 January 2016 9:34 AM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

David Bowie did hundreds of television, magazine, and newspaper interviews during his half-century career — from a stunning 1972 Melody Maker interview in which he proclaimed he was gay, and a legendary 1974 Dick Cavett Show interview where his cocaine abuse and exhaustion were evident, to a candid 1976 Cameron Crowe interview for Playboy, and on through a funny, revealing 2002 GQ cover story.Although Bowie didn't always seem terribly pleased while doing an interview, and hadn't given one in more than a decade before his death, there's enough wit, wisdom, and advice present in what he left behind to last us a lifetime. In his early days, his willingness to give an inflammatory quote about anything controversial turned him into a celebrated misfit philosopher, a beacon for the disenfranchised. But as time went on, Bowie often seemed uncomfortable discussing some of his earlier exploits, and deflected questions with genteel humor »
