Versatile entertainer -- singer, comedian, dancer and trumpet player. First came to the fore during the 1950's in his sketch show "New Look".
Although a life long non-smoker, it is believed that the lung cancer
which took his life was caused by breathing second hand smoke in the
clubs where he performed.
Was nominated for Broadway's 1966 Tony Award as Best Supporting or
Featured Actor (Musical) for "Pickwick."
He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1993 Queen's New Year Honours List for charitable services.
The part of Captain Keane in Carry on up the Khyber was written for Jim Dale but he had stage commitments so the part went to Roy.
