Sundance Selects Acquires ‘Beyond the Hills,’ from ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days’ Helmer Cristian Mungiu; IFC Gets ‘Tied’

18 February 2012 8:28 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

The most exciting news of the weekend pertains to something that, with any luck, will be in about 300 theaters at once. Here, we’re talking about the next film from Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days) — now titled Beyond the Hills — which Deadline tells us has found an American home with IFC’s sister company Sundance Selects.

Our first wind of the project was caught just under three weeks ago, when it was merely known as the tale of “a young woman’s descent into madness, her subsequent exorcism and the police investigation it sparks.” The lovely news of an acquisition, however, brings a lengthy plot synopsis, one which is packed into Sundance Selects’ press release. You can read that below:

“Alina has just been reunited with Voichita in an isolated convent in Romania after spending several years in Germany. The two young women have supported and loved each other »

Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: March 20, 2012

Price: DVD $34.95, Blu-ray $43.95

Studio: Music Box

Eric Elmosnino is Serge Gainsbourg and Laetitia Casta is Brigitte Bardot in Gainsbourg.

The life and career of French singer-songwriter-provocateur Serge Gainsbourg, who’s often regarded as the personification of 1960s cool, is the subject of the 2010 biographical film Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life.

As a singer-songwriter whose landmark musical output includes such sexually infused and scandalous 1960s songs as “Je t’aime … moi non plus” and “Les Sucettes,” he is often regarded as one of the world’s most influential popular musicians. His impassioned music was matched only by his legendarily excessive lifestyle and love affairs with Europe’s most beautiful women, including chanteuses Juliette Greco and Jane Birkin and international sex symbol Brigitte Bardot.

Directed by famed French comic book artist-turned-director Joann Sfar, the film begins with the Gainsbourg’s childhood in Nazi-occupied France and moves through his »

Sundance Review: Richard Gere Shines In The Gripping Moral Morass Of 'Arbitrage'

29 January 2012 9:02 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Robert Miller (Richard Gere) is celebrating his 60th birthday at the start of "Arbitrage," first with his family – including wife Ellen (Susan Sarandon) and daughter/chief financial officer Brooke (Brit Marling) – and then with his mistress, Julie (Laetitia Casta). As the hedge fund manager’s deep financial woes become apparent to us, one wonders if he isn’t wishing while blowing out two cakes’ worth of candles for the ability to convince every character around that he still has the Midas touch. He’s borrowed a significant amount of money to make everything at least appear to be hunky-dory through an ongoing audit, and he’s struggling to sell his business to anyone willing to take on hundreds of millions of dollars in debt. Miller’s lenders don’t want to wait that long, though, and worse than that, Robert now finds himself covering up his tracks in the wake »

Director Nicholas Jarecki Reveals How Being Kicked Off 'The Informers' Helped Fund Sundance Hit 'Arbitrage' & Casting Brit Marling Over Skype

27 January 2012 8:01 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Last year at Sundance, “Margin Call” premiered to an unprepared audience who were greeted by a fantastic ensemble in a gripping drama that gave an insight to the 2008 financial crisis and resulting recession. That film went on to become something of a sleeper hit, and last week, picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, but there's certainly much more to be said about the subject matter. Nicholas Jarecki tackles the other angle of the crisis with “Arbitrage.” Robert Miller (Richard Gere) is a self-made hedge fund titan about to see his entire world crumble around him because of his own hubris and a bad investment. He tries to juggle his wife (Susan Sarandon), his daughter and COO of his company (Brit Marling) and mistress (Laetitia Casta) as his personal and professional life threaten to crash. The Playlist caught up with Jarecki the day after his film had been »

Can't Make It To Sundance? Here's Clips From 'Arbitrage,' 'Grabbers,' 'The Art Of Rap' & 'I Am Not A Hipster'

26 January 2012 6:43 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Who’s bummed out that they can’t be in Park City right now? Who really wishes they were at Sundance watching all these new movies that the internet is full of buzz about? Good, it’s not just me then. Well to make things slightly easier a bunch of films that have premiered there in the past week have released some footage so the rest of us can get a taste of what we’ve been missing. First up, Richard Gere shares a car with Nate Parker and rants at Brit Marling in two clips from Nicholas Jarecki’s directorial debut, “Arbitrage.” The film has been picking up very strong word, and follows a hedge fund magnate who is in over his head and desperate to complete the sale of his shady trading empire to a major bank before his fraud is revealed, while also juggling romances with his wife and art dealer mistress. »

[Sundance Review] Arbitrage

23 January 2012 7:55 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Just when it seemed the man was settling into the fade out so many once-movie stars face, Richard Gere reminds us why he became a star in the first place. Plainly said, he’s got the kind of charisma that could make a snake empathetic.

And here, in Nicholas Jarecki‘s directorial debut, one of the most common, most-hated snakes in recent memory: a big wig New York financial wiz. This particular master of the world’s name is Robert Miller (Gere); his company, Miller Capital, shows a constant profit, a blueprint for success only matched by Miller himself. He’s got a smart, beautiful wife (Susan Sarandon) and a daughter (Brit Marling) poised to follow in his footsteps.

Then, he gets into that ever-ominous New York City cab, and the night gets darker. Miller’s got a mistress, played by Laetitia Casta, who wants him to commit (divorce his wife, »

Sundance 2012: Arbitrage Review

23 January 2012 12:20 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

There are two movies living inside Nicolas Jarecki's Arbitrage.  Both films are about justice and a wealthy man's struggle to elude it.  They both appeal to our hope that one day the truth will out and that no one can hide their dark secrets forever no matter how desperately they might try.  Both stories transcend class because we can all relate to a character who will stop at nothing when he's at risk of losing everything.  But only one story helps Arbitrage stand apart by intelligently showcasing a crime we rarely see depicted in film and embracing the rich drama of family betrayal.  The other story is a dull episode of Law & Order. Robert Miller (Richard Gere) is the successful manager of a hedge fund firm who seems like he has it all, so naturally he doesn't.  He's on the verge of losing his fortune after a bad investment and subsequently cooking of the books. »

Sundance 2012: Richard Gere's cold-blooded 'Arbitrage' generates heat

22 January 2012 7:43 AM, PST | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

They call it a “morality tale” when a character does despicable things and ends up being punished by karmic comeuppance.

Richard Gere’s Arbitrage, about a crooked hedge fund billionaire trying to cover up more than just his financial crimes, is kind of an “anti-morality tale,” with the Bernie Madoff-type wheeler-dealer besieged on all sides by trouble, but somehow sticking it to karma every time — though the question of the film is for how long.

The movie premiered Saturday night at the Sundance Film Festival, where its cold-blooded approach was a bracing contrast to some of the cozier films that had shown so far. »

Five Questions For “Arbitrage” Director Nicholas Jarecki

21 January 2012 11:32 AM, PST | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

Currently best know for his documentary The Outsider, Nicholas Jarecki is poised for reevaluation with Arbitrage, his narrative directorial debut. Jarecki spent a long time ruminating over what kind of story he wanted to tell, ultimately deciding on a thriller set within a world he knew quite a bit about. The film has already garnered attention thanks to its A-List ensemble, but Jarecki hopes his script will force audiences to continue thinking even after the credits finish rolling.  Arbitrage, which is set amidst today’s tumultuous economic terrain and considers the ethics of a hedge-fund mogul, screens today in Park City.

Filmmaker: Your film is a suspense thriller, but also about a man’s morality. How do you categorize the movie? Is it a cinematic ride, a character study, or a snapshot of the American financial landscape?

Jarecki: Arbitrage is a dramatic thriller about a desperate man who must do »

As I leave tomorrow for Sundance, a smattering of new media has come out for some major films premiering.
