Ke$ha Wants To 'Bring The Glitter' To Lilith Fair

11 December 2009 2:05 PM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

By Jo¢elyn Vena

Pop music newbie Ke$ha will be hitting the road next summer for the revival of Lilith Fair, which returns to action after a decade-long nap. She'll be surrounded by Lilith vet and founder Sarah McLachlin as well as ladies like Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Colbie Caillat and Corinne Bailey Rae.

But there's only one woman on board that Ke$ha can't wait to hit the road with: Country music lass Emmylou Harris. "That is really exciting. This is a random one," she told MTV News about her choice artist to be traveling with this summer. "I'm really exciting to be touring with Emmylou Harris because my mom wrote country music and I'm a huge fan of Johnny Cash and old country. And Emmylou Harris is just such a classy woman. I'm excited to share you know not a stage but a festival with her. »

Video Exclusive: TNT's New 'Southland' Promo

11 December 2009 10:02 AM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Josef Adalian

TNT's saturation promotion of "Southland" has begun-- and the man in black is playing a key role.

During the past week, the cable network has started airing a striking 60-second spot touting the return of the John Wells drama canceled by NBC. The background music, appropriate for such a dark show: Johnny Cash's haunting  "God's Gonna Cut You Down."

TNT aired the "Southland" promo several times during the highly-rated premiere of "Men of A Certain Age" and has been airing it frequently on the network. The series bows with a commercia... »

Nick Jonas knows how to pick talent. For his solo side project, Nick Jonas and the Administration, he hooked up with members of Prince's New Power Generation, and said that Prince's signature sound has helped shape several of the songs on the February release, Who I Am. But he admits he's still not sure if the superstar has heard the music.

"I don't know," he told MTV News, noting the track "Conspiracy Theory" has heavy Prince influences. "I've heard one or two stories about how the guys in the band were asked by Prince to come and do some things with him, but they had to decline."

He added that he might get »

Nick Jonas poured his heart and soul into the album Who I Am, with his side project the Administration. With the album set for release February 2, the Jonas Brother said a few of the tracks on it are truly standouts.

"Going back to that point, it's hard to play it song by song, and I have to play the [whole] record, 'cause that's how we made it," he told MTV News about the album, which he recorded in eight days in a Nashville studio.

Although he's only released his first single, the title track, as well as an acoustic version of "Rose Garden," he thinks there are a bunch of songs on the album that will become his fans' favorites. »

Where have all the biopics gone?

9 December 2009 1:32 PM, PST | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

A few years ago, the Hollywood biopic finally seemed to be coming of age. It was the fall of 2004 -- a season that gave us not one but two of the most thrilling biographical dramas ever made, the jumpin' and impassioned Ray and the bold and brilliant Kinsey. (No, that's not Kinsey at left -- it's Woody Harrelson as Larry Flynt -- though it's probably a ménage he would have approved of.) The fact that these two movies came out within one month of each other was a coincidence, yet I marveled, at the time, at what they had in »

'American Idol': Jessica Sierra gives birth to a baby boy

9 December 2009 8:19 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"American Idol" finalist Jessica Sierra gave birth to Kayden Cash Sierra Dec. 5 in Los Angeles.

Just hours after the birth, Sierra spoke with RadarOnline via video from her hospital bed. She was cradling new son Kayden in her arms. Jessica gained notoriety after "Idol" because she got a bit out of control, abusing alcohol and drugs and eventually winding up in jail.

However, she is now proudly two years sober after doing a stint on Dr. Drew's "Celebrity Rehab" and has a beautiful new baby boy. Kayden was born with a full head of black hair and weighed 6 lbs 12 oz. The middle name of "Cash" is because of her love of singer Johnny Cash.

She declined to give the father's name, calling him a "former boyfriend" and that now he's just a very good friend. Congratulations, Jessica!

Josh Brolin in 'Men in Black 3'?!!?!?!

9 December 2009 6:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Sign me up for this rumor. In fact, if this is right, you can bet your bottom dollar that my arse will be in the theater come the first midnight screening. According to the Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex Blog, Josh Brolin is being considered for a lead role in Men in Black 3.

While just about any lead role would make me happy, it looks like there are a few possibilities under consideration. The rumor mill says that Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K might pass the torch over to Brolin as Will Smith's new Agent J partner, or he might play a young Agent K, or be someone else entirely. The project already has a writer and (tentative) director, but it has yet to get the full green light ... but how can it not if Brolin signs on?

While Brolin is a very talented actor, there is nothing »

A Talk with Floyd Mutrux about Baby It's You!, His New Musical About The Shirelles, and the Legendary Woman Behind Them, Florence Greenberg.

3 December 2009 8:30 AM, PST | The Hollywood Interview | See recent The Hollywood Interview news »

(Director, writer, and filmmaker Floyd Mutrux, above.)

By Terry Keefe

It was the 1960s and a foursome took over the popular music charts in America, but they didn’t wear mop-tops. Right before the British Invasion, the girl group known as the Shirelles soared with hits such as “Dedicated to the One I Love,” “Soldier Boy,” “Will You Still Me Tomorrow,” and “Baby It’s You,” amongst many others. The Shirelles were discovered by Florence Greenberg, an ambitious and very prescient New Jersey housewife who founded Scepter Records, and consequently changed the face of popular music forever. In her business life, Greenberg was a woman who dove right into the middle of a male-dominated record industry and created one of the most successful independent labels of the time, and on the personal side, she left her first marriage for a union with African-American songwriter Luther Dixon. The story of Greenberg, »

Gwyneth Paltrow To Sing About Lost Love And Pick Up Trucks

3 December 2009 6:49 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Looks like the famous Pepper Potts will be stepping out of the superhero shadow and into a ten gallon hat and cowboy boots. Digital Spy is reporting that Gwyneth Paltrow has signed on to star alongside country singer and Blind Side support Tim McGraw in Love Don't Let Me Down, written and directed by relative newcomer Shana Feste. The film puts McGraw in a familiar setting as it follows a country singer (Paltrow) looking to pick up her falling stardom. McGraw will play Paltrow's husband, with the two of them, alongside another young star portrayed by Garrett Hedlund, jump starting a tour in hopes of bringing themselves back into the lime light. Also stirred into the mix, somehow, will be Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester as a former beauty queen who presumably is looking to claw her way back to the top as well. Susan Boyle Covers We'd Like To Hear

30 November 2009 9:34 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Saying you're disappointed in Susan Boyle's debut album is kind of like complaining to your grandma about how lame you think her local weatherman is. You could do it, but what's the point?

Susan Boyle was not meant for you. Despite racking up hundreds of millions of views on YouTube since April, the infamously dowdy Scottish singer has released a full-length album I Dreamed a Dream that is laser targeted to the over-40 demo. When I unwrapped the disc last week, I have to admit I was excited. I'd heard her cover of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" and I was blown away by the depth of emotion and richness of Boyle's voice.

But by the time I slogged through predictably schmaltzy takes on "How Great Thou Art," the forgettable Madonna tune "You'll See" and — ugh — the Monkees' "Daydream Believer," I began to wonder if mentor Simon Cowell had not missed a grand opportunity. »

Watch Brandi Carlile and a Puppet Rock "Folsom Prison Blues"

30 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” has seen as many renditions as those holiday standards we’ll be hearing ad nauseum during the next month or so, but there’s something about songstress Brandi Carlile hearty yodeling that makes the country classic all the more timeless…even when she’s accompanied by a keyboard-playing sheep puppet named Rufus. His muppet features keep the rather morbid themes kid-friendly, especially when belting, “I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.” This clip below is taken from her October Pancake Mountain dance party:... »

There's something about Sam | Sam Taylor-Wood

27 November 2009 4:10 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

She was abandoned by her parents and has survived cancer twice. She was a star of Britart, but is now making feature films. She was happily married – now she is happily dating a man half her age. Sam Taylor-Wood opens up to Simon Hattenstone

When Sam Taylor-Wood first read the script of Nowhere Boy, it felt as if somebody had got hold of her guts and squeezed them tight. The story of John Lennon's childhood was uncomfortably close to home: Lennon's mother, Julia, had walked out on him when he was five, just as Taylor-Wood's had walked out on her. A strange coincidence, but hardly unique. She read on. And that's when things got weird. Lennon, who barely knew his father, discovered years later that his mother had not moved away as he had thought – she was living down the road. When Taylor-Wood was 15, six months after her mother left, »

Advance Review - The Crazies (Remake; 2010)

16 November 2009 4:59 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Remakes fall into two categories, "Wow" and "Why did they bother". Sadly, the "Wow"s are few and far between.

For every Zack Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead or David Cronenberg's The Fly, there's five Gus Van Sant's Psycho. Breck Eisner's The Crazies clearly falls into the "Wow" category. A fast-moving, exciting thrill ride that builds to a flat-out apocalyptic conclusion, this Crazies also has a healthy respect for the George A. Romero original even as it goes off in it's own direction.

David (Timothy Olyphant) is the Sheriff of Ogden Marsh, a small midwestern town. Judy, his doctor wife (Radha Mitchell), is pregnant and everything seems idyllic until a townsperson carries a loaded shotgun to a little league game. From that point on, the two realize the locals of their beloved little town are going insane. Government help is Not helpful, as fighter planes and gun-toting »

Learning To Love My Country: A Playlist to Prepare Rock Newbies Watching the Cma Awards

10 November 2009 6:38 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

I grew up in Northern New Jersey, which last time I looked is slightly north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Yet thanks to my late great dad -- an early and vocal proponent of Jewgrass -- my first ever concert was seeing the still brilliant Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at Carnegie Hall. Thanks to Mom and Dad, there were also a few Johnny Cash 8-tracks laying around our house for me to discover and treasure alongside those of the Beatles and Neil Diamond. So I suppose I come by my lifelong love of country music pretty naturally. For the past seven years, I've spent a few weeks a year in Nashville writing the script for the Cma Awards, also known for good reason as Country Music's Biggest Night. And while I hate being away from home so long, I love Nashville... »
