Dog Ears Music: Volume Eighty

10 July 2009 7:41 AM, PDT | From Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news

The Louvin Brothers 2001's Country Music Hall of Famers Ira (mandolin) and Charlie (guitar) Loudermilk, a.k.a. the Louvin Brothers, were born in Alabama in the mid '20s. This harmonic super-duo paved a highway for the future of country music. By 1955, the brothers made it to the Grand Ole Opry, and Elvis, then Johnny Cash, opened for them over the next year. The brothers made records for Decca, MGM, Capital, and Apollo until their breakup in 1963. In 1965, brother Ira was killed in a car crash. Brother Charlie went on to have a successful solo career. To date, he's recorded nearly 20 albums and toured with Cake, Cheap Trick, and the Old '97s. The Louvin Brothers have been covered by Emmylou Harris, the Byrds, and Dolly Parton, among many others. Rosanne Cash Announces New LP Influenced by Father Johnny

8 July 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | From Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news

In 1973, country legend Johnny Cash decided his daughter Rosanne was lacking a solid country-music education, so he gave her list of what he considered to be 100 essential songs for her to know. The younger Cash, who has since made 11 records of her own, turned back to the list for inspiration on her next project, and—with the help of a few friends—will release her first album of covers on Oct. 6.

Branson follows the stories of three such performers. There's Jack, who decided to change his name to Jackson Cash, become a Johnny Cash impersonator and move to Branson. From Cairo to Compton, Harlem to Hanoi, last week, fans of the King of Pop were celebrating the life of Michael Jackson by listening and dancing to the iconic singer's music. They were also rushing out to buy as much of it as they could, creating a retail crush around the country (and the world) that will likely land a number of Jackson albums at the top of the Billboard catalog charts next week.

Retailers across the country reported a mad rush on Jackson titles, with many saying that they had quickly run out of their stock of music within 24 hours of the singer's death on Thursday at the age of 50. The quickest-selling titles, according to Billboard, were the Number Ones and The Essential Michael Jackson compilations,

Johnny Cash, Jane’s Addiction And The Father’s Day Playlist

19 June 2009 2:54 PM, PDT | From MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news

Building a soundtrack for any particular holiday is usually a slippery slope, mostly because not every special event on the calendar is music-friendly. Christmas has any number of excellent songs available, and any good Memorial Day mix should kick off with Alice in Chains’ “Rooster.” But what about Arbor Day, or even Thanksgiving? The pickings are slim.

Father’s Day falls somewhere in between. There are plenty of songs dedicated to dads out there, though the majority of tunes fall in the schmaltzy, sentimental pap category. There are also a number of tunes that address fathers in quite a negative light (not surprising, considering rock and roll is 87% about rebelling against your parents, not honoring them). What we’re left with is a handful of quality selections — some more appropriate than others — that sum up the complicated relationships we sometimes have with our patriarchs. Here’s the Father’s Day

Billy Ray And Miley Cyrus Top The Best Father-Kid Combos

19 June 2009 1:44 PM, PDT | From MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news

This Sunday is Father’s Day, so you still have time to get out and get your cards purchased and your barbecue equipment/ties/books about baseball purchased. Music history is full of father/kid collaborations, some awesome (Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy jamming with his son Spencer) and some creepy (Nat King Cole’s posthumous collaboration with daughter Natalie). Here are my five favorite family duos.

Billy Ray and Miley Cyrus: Billy Ray certainly had his own success in the early ’90s, but he is enjoying a renaissance thanks to his ubiquitous daughter. Their collaboration “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” is a surprisingly sweet ballad that deals directly with fatherhood.

Nas and Olu Dara: Jazz musician Olu Dara (born Charles Jones) has always had something of a complicated relationship with his son Nas (born Nasir Jones). But their collaborations have been nothing short of excellent. Dara played cornet

First Impressions of the New Avett Brothers Album, I and Love and You

19 June 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | From Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news

While I was working on the cover story for the June issue of Paste (the new Special Edition mini), I sat in a room at the Hilton in Austin, Texas, with one of The Avett Brothers' label reps from their new label Columbia, and she played me rough mixes of seven tracks from the band's forthcoming major-label debut, I and Love and You, which was produced by the legendary Rick Rubin, who's worked with everyone from Johnny Cash to Public Enemy.

Even though I was hearing unfinished rough mixes, it was already the some of the best-sounding, most fully realized music I'd heard from the band. And given the quality of their output thus far, that's saying a lot.

Here is a brief preview of the what's to come late this September when the album drops—impressions scribbled straight to my yellow legal pad, as I sat there listening to

Johnny Cash -- and His Impersonator -- Meet 'Branson'

18 June 2009 2:46 PM, PDT | From The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news

By Steve Pond

When the documentary “Branson,” which comes to the Los Angeles Film Festival this weekend, catches an ornery Johnny Cash impersonator named Jackson Cash playing for free lunch at a food court in a Branson, Missouri, mall, it was flashback time for me.

I’ve never been in the food court, but I was in that mall in the spring of 1992 -- walking alongside the real Johnny Cash as he pushed a shopping cart through the men’s department of Wal-Mart.

He tossed eight pairs of black socks into the cart, threw in a pair of shiny black sweatpants … and then, i...

Adam Lambert v Clay Aiken, it's on like Donkey Kong

29 May 2009 7:41 AM, PDT | From Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news

Last week Clay Aiken got all wadded up because people had the audacity to actually comment on Clay's pay-to-play posted blog that smacked up the vocal talent of American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert, who he cattily remarked had made his "ears bleed" during his rendition of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire." Clay then had to go on the defensive saying essentially, 'I'm sorry' and get a life to those who pointed out his published insults, castigating reporters and fans alike for making such a big deal about Clay's published "opinions." Now, Adam is fighting back with well chosen words. .I don.t know Clay,. Adam told Access Hollywood on Thursday morning after performing on the .Today Show.. .I.m glad he.s

Mark Sinnis – A Southern Tale (Musick Review)

29 May 2009 2:00 AM, PDT | From Fangoria.com | See recent Fangoria news

From an outsider's view, Gothic Rock and Country Music have always seemed to be polar opposites.

Dig a little deeper into the history of Gothic Rock and you’ll find acts that take the darker edge of the “American Spirit” and present it as something frightening and disturbing.  Fields of the Nephilim, Eighteen Horsepower, and heck even early tracks by The Cramps took the darker side of down home music and made it a beautifully frightening art form.  If we look at the late Johnny Cash - the man in black himself, we have more than enough brooding angst to fill a dozen splintered oak barrels.

Mark Sinnis is one of the recent rare bronze and silver set vocal gems to hit the dark rock music scene.  His vocal style is often described as “Cemetery & Western”.  In listening to A Southern Tale, it’s as deeply moving and lilting as

Adam Lambert Says Clay Aiken Can Ride His 'Coattails'

28 May 2009 9:33 PM, PDT | From Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news

Clay Aiken's critique of Adam Lambert's singing might hurt Adam's fans, but the latest "American Idol" runner-up seems not taking Clay's comment to heart. Recently, Adam responded calmly on Clay's negative words to him, saying that the former "Idol" runner-up criticized him in an attempt to get public attention.

"I don't know Clay," Adam said in an interview on Thursday, May 28, morning after performing on the "Today Show." He added, "I'm glad he's getting headlines now though, because he wasn't before." Adam even gave Clay thumbs up sign while saying, "If he wants to ride my coattails about it, good for him."

Last week, it was reported that Clay wrote on his website that he doesn't like Adam's performance on "American Idol" finale when Adam sang Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire". Clay said at that moment that Adam's voice was "Contrived, awful, and slightly frightening". A day later,

Buddy & Julie Miller Walk the Line

28 May 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | From Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news

On May 15, 2003, Buddy Miller burst into his house near Belmont University in Nashville and told his wife Julie that June Carter Cash had died. They were both stunned by the news, because there had been many reports of Johnny Cash’s health problems and everyone had braced for his imminent death, but no one expected to lose June first. They’d assumed she’d be the rock Johnny leaned on in his last days.

Fallen Idol: Adam Lambert

26 May 2009 4:37 PM, PDT | From TVStar | See recent TVStar news

Our love affair began when the well-posed entertainer Adam Lambert dominated Michael Jackson Week on American Idol. From that week on, we all fell in love with the extremely gifted artist that shocked audiences each week with his amazing performances. Week after week, Adam would reinvent himself by dressing differently, picking unique songs, and stepping outside the box. The moment that Adam took the stage to sing Johnny Cash decked out in a silk suit, we knew he was something special. He might have dressed flashy, but the artist never once acted as if he had more talent or more experience than anyone else on stage. Adam was always extremely polite, friendly, and without fail he would flash his million dollar smile to audiences worldwide. Last week as millions watched, Adam Lambert was picked as the runner-up to Kris Allen in the American Idol finale. PopStar spoke with the fallen

Clay Aiken's lame Adam Lambert mea culpa

23 May 2009 3:43 PM, PDT | From Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news

Let's see if we can follow the logic of ex American Idol contestant Clay Aiken, who charges his fans money annually to access his blog. He castigated the current runner-up American Idol, Adam Lambert, in one of his blog musings only to have it come back and bite him. Now, Aiken has issued an apology of sorts, but blames you the reader and all entertainment websites that got wind of Aiken's own words for stirring up a hornet's nest that he now claims is totally unfounded. The comment that set "the blogosphere" off was the insult he penned about Lambert's rendition of a Johnny Cash classic song, "Ring of Fire." "It makes my ears bleed," wrote the openly

Clay Aiken: Criticism of Adam Lambert Taken The Wrong Way, Never Actually Said American Idol Runnerup Was "Too Gay"

(Syop News 5/23/09) Clay Aiken may wish he never opened his mouth or his blog. Aiken now writes that his comments were just meant to be colorful. "Yes, I wrote that I thought my ears would bleed when I heard it," admitted Aiken. "But I never meant that they actually bled because Adam's atrocious performance. I just happen to be shaving when I heard him and cut my ear. The bleeding was just as much my fault as Adam's."
