‘Snowfall’ Review: The Robust True Story of How Crack Began Makes for a Surprisingly Modest TV Show

29 June 2017 12:20 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Every piece of “Snowfall” is well-crafted. From the pitch to the paper to the scenes brought to life from it, John Singleton, Eric Amadio, and Dave Andron’s new drama tells an authentic ’80s tale inspired by truth and shaped by street life in South Central L.A. As the tagline reads, it’s the story of how crack began, which contrasts longstanding cultural oppression with the CIA’s secret role funneling drugs into the country. You can imagine the comparisons — “It’s like ‘The Americans’ meets a west coast ‘Wire’!” — and you can see the layered craft work throughout the first six episodes.

But “Snowfall” doesn’t transcend beyond its talking points. Exquisite period detail and terrific performances, from newcomers like series lead Damson Idris to returning favorites Bokeem Woodbine and Kevin Carroll, can’t fully overcome a familiarity of structure, pacing, and story. We haven’t heard much »

‘The Leftovers’: 7 Unambiguous, Post-Finale Facts from Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, and the Creators

5 June 2017 12:12 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

“Well, you’re one for two.”

That’s how Jimmy Kimmel greeted “Lost” and “Leftovers” co-creator Damon Lindelof Sunday night, following a For Your Consideration screening of the series’ finale. Alluding to the mixed reaction to the “Lost” finale — as well as the overwhelmingly positive reception to “The Leftovers” ending, both inside and outside the room — Kimmel got a big laugh from the TV Academy members present.

And they didn’t end there.

The Leftovers” cast and creators gathered at Paramount Studios for a finale screening and panel discussion, the latter of which was nearly as long as the 72-minute episode itself. Joining Lindelof and Kimmel on-stage were, (from left-to-right in the photo below) writer and executive producer Tom Spezialy, finale director and series Ep Mimi Leder, writer, Ep, and co-creator Tom Perrotta, Lindelof, Kimmel, Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, Amy Brenneman, Scott Glenn, and Kevin Carroll.

Goodbye, 'The Leftovers': How HBO's Show Went From Good to Canon-Worthy Great

5 June 2017 8:24 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

The Leftovers began as a portrait of a small New York town tearing itself apart after a national tragedy. It ended with a final season that revolved, in large part, around an international scientific conspiracy involving Cousin Larry from Perfect Strangers. And over the course of getting from bereaved jus' folks to Mark Linn-Baker, Damon Lindelof's mediation on mourning in America became one of the most moving and thrilling television dramas of the young century.

How the hell did that happen?

It's hard to believe now, after the merry »

Created by Damon Lindelof and acclaimed novelist Tom Perrotta, the HBO series The Leftovers, about what happens after 140 million people vanished from the face of the Earth, is currently in its final season. With the seventh anniversary of the Sudden Departure approaching, John (Kevin Carroll) and Michael (Jovan Adepo) Murphy are each on their own path to determine whether there may truly be miracles, after all. Exclusive: Breaking Down the 7 Best 'Leftovers' Musical Moments From the Final Season

30 May 2017 9:30 AM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

The Peabody award-winning The Leftovers concludes on Sunday, June 4 and through its three seasons, the show has become just as acclaimed for its music as its incredible story, writing and acting.

While the HBO series is no stranger to change (season one's opening titles used an original piece by composer Max Richter, and season two used Iris DeMent's "Let the Mystery Be"), season three has gone even further, adapting the theme song to each episode. "[It was showrunner] Damon Lindelof's decision," music supervisor Liza Richardson tells Et by phone, adding that the music choices on the series vary between her and Lindelof's allegiance to certain artists, love of repetition and the desire to "surprise."

Exclusive: Damon Lindelof on Ending ‘Leftovers’ in the Wake of ‘Lost

‘Leftovers’ Star Amy Brenneman Dives Into Laurie’s Big Decision: ‘It’s a Real Sea Change’

(Spoiler alert: Please do not read on if you haven’t watched Sunday’s sixth episode of “The Leftovers”). The characters of “The Leftovers” are always barreling toward some divine and usually-terrible truth — so when you couple that with the heavy task of delivering three final episodes, you get “certified.” It’s number six out of eight, and it’s a beautiful showcase for many of the show’s players — Carrie Coon, Christopher Eccleston, Kevin Carroll, Scott Glenn and, of course, protagonist Justin Theroux — but none more potent than Amy Brenneman. ‘Fargo’ and ‘The Leftovers’ Collide as Damon Lindelof Interviews Noah Hawley, Ewan McGregor and Carrie Coon

12 May 2017 11:56 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

“Carrie, I’m not familiar with your work prior to ‘Fargo,'” Damon Lindelof said to Carrie Coon. “I’ve heard you’re an excellent actress.”

This, obviously, is a boldfaced lie. Back in 2014, Lindelof was one of the first people in Hollywood to notice Coon’s immense talent when he cast her in HBO’s drama, “The Leftovers.” But he wasn’t about to say as much while moderating a For Your Consideration panel for her other show, FX’s anthology series, “Fargo.”

And neither was “Fargo” creator Noah Hawley.

“When I first saw Carrie — in a movie,” Hawley said, pointedly, before adding, “Maybe another show…” The showrunner trailed off, allowing the audience to fill in the blank.
