No back nine for 'Lie to Me'; The CW wants its own 'Glee'

7 December 2010 2:26 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Some bite-sized TV news for your Tuesday:

Fox isn't ordering any more of "Lie to Me" this season -- but that doesn't necessarily mean the show is canceled. It will complete its 13-episode order by the end of January, after which "The Chicago Code" takes its timeslot; the network will make a decision on "Lie to Me's" future closer to upfronts time in the spring. [Deadline]

The CW has a "Glee"-esque musical series in development, but it's focused more on rock 'n' roll. It's tentatively titled "The Prickly Spheres" and is about a musician who turns down a Julliard scholarship and joins an indie-rock band in Minneapolis. Music manager and producer Jeff Kwatinetz ("Royal Pains") is among the executive producers. [Vulture]

"The Middle" just expanded a little bit. ABC has tacked on two episodes to the season order for the comedy, bringing its total to 24. [TV Guide]

Robert Townsend’s Web Projects Make a Difference

7 December 2010 1:53 PM, PST | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

For three years Robert Townsend has been working as one of the more prolific and successful web series directors around, trying to do good with a number of projects with socially progressive non-profit One Economy. With over 30 years in the industry, Townsend is an understated but respected player in black Hollywood. Perhaps best known for his sitcom The Parent ’Hood and film Meteor Man – at least to me! – Townsend continues to work, making documentaries and films, most recently directing and producing a number of successful web series, including Diary of a Single Mom and the upcoming Los Americans. “It’s for the web but we’re trying something different,” Townsend said in an interview. For Townsend, these series, targeted at multicultural audiences, are not just a job but a philosophy. Diary, whose third season premiered last week, tells the story of a single mother, Ocean (Monica Calhoun, The Best Man, »

Notes On “We The Peeples” (The Tyler Perry Curse/Blessing + Additional Casting)

19 November 2010 7:47 AM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

First… filmmakers who direct movies under Tyler Perry’s 34th Street Films production banner may find themselves unfairly victimized… that whole guilt by association thing. Audiences may impulsively assume that, with Tyler Perry producing your work, your film is similar, in style and content, to those in his oeuvre – a comparison you may/may not at all desire.

And it certainly doesn’t help when articles about Your film, incorrectly mention its title with the words “Tyler Perry’s” preceding it, as in, “Tyler Perry’s We The Peeples” – something I’ve seen mistakenly done with Tina Gordon Chism’s feature film debut… unless of course, that’s how it’s going to be marketed. I don’t know…

It could get frustrating; but, alas, “Tyler Perry” is now a well-known brand, and anything/anyone associated with that brand will have to take into consideration the possibility of enjoying the rewards, »

My First Time Watching The Star Wars Holiday Special

15 November 2010 4:15 AM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

I am a Star Wars enthusiast. I own the movies on VHS and DVD, and can quote them while watching or on my own (which gives my wife no pleasure whatsoever). I own the soundtracks, I read the books and comics, I have t-shirts, I have video games, two versions of Star Wars Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit, and drive a crappy white 1991 Bonneville that I have affectionately dubbed “The Millennium Falcon”. I even still buy Star Wars toys without lying to everyone about how they’re for my kids. I own the Droids DVD, and have actually debated with myself in stores as to whether or not I should purchase the various Ewok specials, merely because they are Star Wars. I have surpassed geek and gone straight to nerd where Star Wars is concerned. So it’s no wonder that when I first found out in the mid 90s about The Star Wars Holiday Special, »

“1 a Minute” wants to help stop the clock on breast cancer deaths

5 October 2010 8:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Generally, I rebel against pink. (The color, not the awesome musician.) Too many years of my mother trying to make me girly, I guess. But I willingly, even proudly, wear pink to honor survivors – and non-survivors – of breast cancer.

During October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we see pink everywhere. NFL players wear it (and those who won’t should be ashamed). People add it to their online avatars. It becomes the background of television show stages, the subject of talk shows — even a common theme in the comics pages.

And seriously, that’s great. Anything that raises awareness of a disease that can be managed with early detection is awesome. But sometimes I think we tend to forget that behind all of this pink is an army of courageous men and women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Individuals who fight like hell to survive – and feel like hell in the process. »

When Melissa Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, she didn’t hide anything from her kids.

“They were 6 and 8 at the time,” she recalls. “Tammy and I said that my tumor was like a lump with a cold in it, that the cold had spread to my body, and that we needed to take it out, and take some medicine.”

Explaining her disease in terms Bailey Jean and Beckett (now 13 and 11) understood made things easier, she says. “I didn’t say anything frightening, like ‘I might die!’ ” she shares. “But I wanted to let them know the seriousness of it, »

Recap – White Collar 2.01 "Withdrawal"

16 July 2010 8:38 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Yep, that plane really did blow up, and yes, Kate Moreau really is dead. Conspiracy theorists, you can relax now. The important question as we open season two of White Collar is where do we go from here?

Thankfully, the catastrophe isn’t without its proper fallout. The FBI is grilling Peter about the plane explosion and the conspiracy, while Neal is back behind bars, still trying to cope with the death of the woman he thought was his true love. As if that wasn’t enough, a bank robber known only as “The Architect” is keeping New York on its toes. Sounds like our guys need to get to work, Stat!

Things have gotten interesting: Peter finds out about a secret meeting Fowler is supposed to have and decides to crash it, while Neal is back in prison and not adjusting well. The two have a visit and Neal »
