Attended Northwestern University and the University of Houston. Earned a degree from UCLA in 1954.

He began his professional career as a story editor for CBS-TV's "Studio One", and was associate producer of "Playhouse 90" and "GE Theater". He went on to write screenplays and books for over 100 movies, TV shows, and stage plays during his 40-year career.

He wrote his first story when he was 9 years old. It was a murder mystery, and he sold it to a classmate for 15 cents.
