Amiable French stage and screen character actor of prolific output. Often played 'everyman' comedy roles and was twice recipient of the César Award for Best Supporting Actor as well as winning a special César for lifetime achievement in 1993.
Was good friends with Jane Birkin, Stéphane Audran and Evelyne Buyle. He worked with all three in How to Make Good When One Is a Jerk and a Crybaby (1974).
Good friends with Michel Bouquet.
