You know the old saying: One’s man’s trash is another man’s treasure. That applies to me and my pals so often.
Now, I realize I’m very blessed: I have a great bunch of friends. I share interests and/or a long history with each them. I guess that’s part of the definition of a friend. But we don’t all love the same stuff. And when it comes to Geek Culture, a bunch of my friends just aren’t that into it.
I pity those fools as I flip through the latest PaperGirls.
Freddie P is that type of friend. He’s a long-time pal. We grew up in the same small town, kept in touch through college and lived near another in those wild just-a-few-years-outta-college days. After that, we always stayed in touch. We’ve watched each other’s families grow up. We laughed...

Last week we had the pleasure of chatting with film composer Henry Jackman, whose body of work stretches from Monsters vs. Aliens to apocalyptic comedy This is the End. More recently, the musician has completed work on upcoming Marvel movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier – and you can read what he had to say about that highly anticipated film here – but the focus of our chat was his work on Sony Pictures’ BAFTA winning / Oscar nominated Captain Phillips, for which the composer himself was BAFTA nominated.
Jackman goes into detail on why self-discipline was paramount for the project, in addition to scoring epic superhero themes and what happens to music which doesn’t make it into the film.If you haven’t already, you can click here for your chance to win a copy or click here to buy one!

I love strippers! Always have and always will. Having said that I have never been to a real burlesque show. Oh, I’ve been to tittie bars, sure, tittie bars, absolutely! Four years in the Navy and having been a bachelor all my life (I am engaged to a wonderful woman so cut me some slack here) I’ve been to plenty of bars where topless dancers do their shimmy and shake and hang from the pole and all that. But that isn’t really burlesque.
I can remember growing up in St. Louis in the 60s and 70s and looking at ads in the Globe Democrat and Post Dispatch for the Grand Burlesque downtown (was it on Washington?) and the Stardust Burlesque on DeBaliviere. How I wanted to go to those theaters, how I wanted to see Evelyn West and her $20,000 (was that the dollar amount?...

Leona Lewis treated her entourage to 7,000 pounds worth of drinks in one evening. The "Run" singer splashed out on strong Treasure Chest cocktails with 20 members of her staff at London's Mahiki club on Monday night, June 14, 2010 following her headline show at the city's O2 arena.
"Leona likes to have the odd glass of champagne but she's not a massive drinker," an onlooker told the Daily Star newspaper. "But it was the first time she's headlined the O2 and, as London girl, she had all her family and friends out and wanted to celebrate properly," revealed the source.
The 25-year-old star was given her own area in the exclusive bar and was seen chatting to "Glee" actor Matthew Morrison, who plays teacher Will Schuester in the hit U.S. TV series. "Leona had her own VIP area and was sat chatting to Matt. Everyone had a wild time," the source added.

Daymond John puts his money where his mouth is, and who'd expect anything less of a hungry, sharp-toothed shark? Yes, John is not just the creator/boss of the gazillion-dollar Fubu apparel label and not just the author of Display of Power: How Fubu Changed a World of Fashion, Brand and Lifestyle, but he's one of the sharks vying to back/finance/promote entrepreneurs on the ABC reality show Shark Tank. The series will wrap up its first season at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on Oct. 20, and TVStar snagged a few minutes of John's time to talk about the show, his experience on it, and the odds of a second season. What was your initial reaction when you heard about Shark Tank? I don't know why anyone would want to invest and spend their own money. And then I remembered my own start as an entrepreneur. I remember my drive,...

Chicago – While you count the days until the beloved reboot of “Star Trek” hits Blu-Ray and DVD on November 17th, new and old fans should check back in with the original crew of the Enterprise in Paramount’s excellent 7-disc HD set, bursting with not only dozens of special features but enhanced visual effects and audio. This season of “Star Trek” has never looked like this.
And I’m not sure it ever should have. Before getting into the meat of this excellent set, the main issue surrounding these remastered classic episodes of television is that the effects have been dragged kicking and screaming into the new millenium. Even the opening credits have been enhanced, as the cheap model of the Enterprise has been replaced by, well, kind of cheap CGI of the Enterprise.

Anyone that has read this site for a long time knows I am a pretty big fan of the original "Star Trek" universe. I'm talking Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty and the gang. I have reviewed all six of the last Original Series DVD releases as well as the DVD releases of Star Trek: First Contact, Generations, Insurrection, Nemesis and all four seasons of "Enterprise". Strangely enough I don't consider myself a Trekkie since I love the show, but don't have a very deep knowledge of the universe, and that's an understatement. My favorite movies from the franchise are Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home and I have no idea when was the last time I saw the original Motion Picture, Search for Spock, The Final Frontier or The Undiscovered Country. However, that will all change come May 12 as Paramount will release all six of the original Star Trek films...

A black man could be elected president today. But he would not necessarily be the first depicted in the media. After all, we’ve already seen black presidents such as Morgan Freeman in Deep Impact but even he was beaten to the Oval Office in 1976 by New York Governor Timothy Pettigrew.
Pettigrew was the creation of Berry Reece and was featured in a serialized story that ran in A Treasure Chest of Fun and Fact from January through June 1964. Joe Sinnott, famed as inker on Fantastic Four, did the artwork as part of his long association with the Catholic Church’s magazine.
According to Reece, Pope Pius XI asked that American parochial school students becoming more aware of and active in civic affairs. The result was the six-part serial featuring the African-American’s run for office. He came in second in New Hampshire’s primary and even survived an assassination attempt.
