Married petite actress Mary Akin when she was just 17 and he was 38. He was already married once - in 1905 but the records of that union are lost - and divorced. Carewe and Akin had two children during their first marriage, daughter Sally Ann (b. 1925) and son William (b. 1927). A third child with Mary, Carol Lee (b. 1932), happened during their second marriage.

Carewe first arrived in Hollywood by train, but not as a passenger; he was a hobo, and had hopped into a boxcar hoping to get to warmer weather in Los Angeles.

Silent film director, whose output was noted for pictorial quality. Started as a stage actor, in New York from 1910 as a member of the Dearborn Stock Company. He chose 'Edwin' as his stage name as tribute to famed thespian Edwin Booth. In films from 1912 with the Philadelphia-based Lubin company.
Before Edwin Carewe married Mary Akin, he was married to Mary Jane Croft. They wed in Toronto, Canada on the ninth of January, 1909. They had two daughters, Mary Jane Carewe and motion picture artist, Rita Carewe. They later divorced.
Edwin Carewe and his two brothers Finis Fox and Wallace Fox were American Indians who all appeared on the 1907 Chickasaw rolls of the Five Civilized Tribes.
