Amy Schumer Bails on Barbie

15 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Amy Schumer is Barbie no more. The comedian has bailed on her big screen adventure centered around the iconic doll. She cited a scheduling conflict as the reason for her departure. And she made the announcement via Variety, explaining why she was no longer set to take on the blonde in the pink Corvette.

"Sadly, I'm no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts. The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I'm bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen."

Many were shocked when the news first hit that Amy Schumer was playing Barbie in a big screen movie based on Mattel's iconic doll. That is, until the storyline was explained. Then it all made sense. Schumer's Barbie was a factory defect who left the toy word to discover the pain and misery normal women experience in the real world. »

Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton’s “Battle of the Sexes” Gets Awards-Friendly Release

22 March 2017 9:02 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Battle of the Sexes

Emma Stone just won her first Oscar in February, and the “La La Land” actress may be in running for the 2018 Academy Awards as well. Fox Searchlight has announced an awards-friendly release date for Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton’s “Battle of the Sexes,” Deadline reports. The film will hit theaters September 22. Stone stars in the tennis comedy alongside her “Crazy Stupid Love” co-star Steve Carell.

The film chronicles the “legendary 1973 tennis match between ex-champ/hustler Bobby Riggs and world №1 Billie Jean King,” the source summarizes. The 29-year-old King handily defeated the 55-year-old Riggs in one of the most-watched sports events of all time.

Penned by Simon Beaufoy (“Slumdog Millionaire”), “Battle of the Sexes” co-stars Elisabeth Shue (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”), Alan Cumming (“The Good Wife”), Andrea Riseborough (“Bloodline”), Sarah Silverman (“Masters of Sex”), and Bill Pullman (“The Equalizer”).

Carell appeared in Faris and Dayton’s feature debut, 2006’s “Little Miss Sunshine.” The comedy, which follows a dysfunctional family as they embark on a road trip to a beauty pageant, received four Oscar nominations including Best Picture, and took home two trophies. The collaborators’ critically acclaimed follow-up, 2012’s “Ruby Sparks,” was written by Zoe Kazan, who also starred in the unconventional romantic comedy about a writer (Paul Dano) who writes a love interest into existence (Kazan).

There have been previous films about the King-Riggs match, including Jane Anderson’s 2001 TV movie “When Billie Beat Bobby” starring Holly Hunter, and James Erskine and Zara Hayes’ 2013 documentary “The Battle of the Sexes.” The epic rivalry between King and Riggs will be depicted by Elizabeth Banks (“Pitch Perfect” franchise) and Paul Giamatti (“Billions”) in an upcoming HBO film, and serves as the inspiration behind “Balls,” an upcoming opera from composer Laura Karpman and librettist Gail Collins.

Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton’s “Battle of the Sexes” Gets Awards-Friendly Release was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story. »

Can Emma Stone do the double? Billie Jean King Biopic Gets Awards-Season Release Date

22 March 2017 12:29 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Emma Stone won this year’s Best Actress Oscar for her performance in La La Land. Fox Searchlight, who will release her new movie Battle of the Sexes, seem hopeful that lightening will strike twice.

Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, Battle of the Sexes tells the true story of the 1973 tennis match between World number one, Billie King (Stone), and ex-champ and serial hustler, Bobby Riggs. In hope of capturing some gold it will release on 22nd September, putting it right in the awards season window.  Starring alongside Stone, and also likely to be in line for awards, is Steve Carell. Carell will play King’s rival Riggs.

This will be Stone’s first role post win and it looks like she’ll manage to avoid the Best Actress curse. The likes of Charlize Theron and Halle Berry all fell foul of it, following their win with an ill-advised action flick. »
