In 1981 he had a hit (which reached number 3 in the UK charts) with a
double A-side single "Sheffield Grinder"/"Capstick Comes Home", a
parody of the Hovis bread commercial which was popular at the time,
poking fun at the traditional northern "when I were a lad" stereotypes
of working long hours in appalling conditions in the coal mines,
walking miles to and from work through the snow and getting paid a
pittance.
