15 May 2012 7:46 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Four months removed from its Sundance premiere, Michael Mohan’s “Save The Date” has finally landed a North American distribution deal with IFC Films. This is the second high-profile release the distributor has picked up in as many weeks, recently having brokered a deal to release Walter Salles’ adaptation of the landmark Jack Kerouac novel, “On The Road” which is set to premiere next week at the Cannes Film Festival.

Mohan co-wrote the script with Egan Reich and acclaimed graphic-novelist, Jeffrey Brown, and it’s an endearing romantic comedy (read our review here, and an interview with Mohan here) that stars Lizzy Caplan (“Party Down”) as a young woman adrift in the aftermath of a failed relationship and in the throes of a rebound during the runup to her sister’s wedding. “Save The Date” also stars Alison Brie (“Community,” “Mad Men”), Martin Starr (“Party Down”), Mark Webber, and Geoffrey Arend. »

15 May 2012 7:17 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

With a cast that boasts buzzed about comedic actors.like Community's Alison Brie and Party Down's Lizzy Caplan and Martin Starr.as well as a unique perspective on the romantic comedy, Save the Date drew plenty of attention at this year's Sundance Film Festival, including a nod for the Grand Jury Prize in the drama category. Yet somehow the sophomore effort from writer-director Michael Mohan (One Too Many Mornings) did not score a distribution deal.until now. Variety reports that at long last IFC has purchased all North American rights to the unconventional romantic comedy that stars Brie and Caplan as two sisters whose misadventures in romance involve wedding planning, rock stars, and a mild-mannered marine biologist, making it the last major purchase out of Sundance. However the trade reveals it wasn't cold feet that kept IFC from closing the deal on Save the Date, it was the »

Veep’s Matt Walsh on Improv, the Beltway, and His Character’s Fake Dog

11 May 2012 7:45 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

A founding member of the Upright Citizen's Brigade, Matt Walsh is constantly popping up in comedies, especially those by friend and frequent collaborator Todd Phillips, to steal an improvised scene or two. But lately, he has been getting a lot more face time — and with the vice-president (as played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) — on HBO's Veep. On top of that, he recently wrote and directed what might be the first true improv movie, High Road, in history. So we thought it was high time to check in with the comedian about his movie, the show, and how he came up with his character's fake dog.Why are you in Chicago at the moment?I'm in a hotel room awaiting the premiere of High Road, along with James Pumphrey, Zach Woods, and Lizzy Caplan. I thought it was already on DVD?It's an indie, and we're very disorganized. [Laughs.] We're having a few »

Director John Madden Talks The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Capturing the Essence of India and Directing the Pilot for Showtime’s Masters Of Sex

2 May 2012 7:18 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The dramedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, from acclaimed and accomplished director John Madden, follows seven retirees from the U.K. in need of a transformation, who find themselves spending their golden years at a rundown hotel that does not quite live up to the lush amenities pictured in the brochure.  The hotel’s naive young owner, Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel), inherited the once sophisticated building from his father, hoping to turn it into a high-end luxury hotel.  Instead, the water and electricity are iffy at best, and India’s overwhelming contrasts are both intoxicating and frightening for these seven newcomers, who are unsure about what the future might hold.  The film stars Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Ronald Pickup and Celia Imrie. During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, director John Madden talked about why this premise was so attractive to him, determining what aspects of India to capture, »

Alison Brie on Frumpy Trudy and Her Art-School Sexual Experimentation

1 May 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

We went shopping in Soho with Alison Brie earlier this year and watched her try on a host of unfortunate dresses while we discussed her talented feet (she can make an egg-salad sandwich with ‘em), and her roles on two of our favorite TV shows, Community and Mad Men. Here’s what didn’t make it into the original profile, including her thoughts on frumpy Trudy, the inspiration for type-a Annie, and Brie’s art-school sexual experimentation. What was your experience shooting Save the Date?It was so fun. When we shot that movie we were all so close. It’s basically a five-hander with Martin Starr and Lizzy Caplan and Geoffrey Arend and Mark Webber. It sounds lame to say when people say "passion project" and you want to punch them in the face. But it was like we all just loved making it and we were so close when we did it. »

Diff: Michael Mohan Talks 'Save The Date' Starring Lizzy Caplan & Why It Needs To Be Seen On The Big Screen

29 April 2012 7:59 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

At a recent screening at the Dallas International Film Festival, writer-director Michael Mohan had to narrate the opening of his second feature film when it began with no sound: "Right now you're hearing the sounds of a book store. There might be a car driving by, and that guy is about to drink coffee." Fortunately the projectionist was able to restore sound by the time the title sequence started, but the botched and awkward opening set the mood for the equally awkward and uncomfortable situations that befall Lizzy Caplan in the romantic-comedy, "Save the Date."

The light and endearing film (you can read our review from Sundance right here) follows a struggling illustrator and bookstore manager (Caplan) who struggles with emotional vulnerability and commitment in the run up to her sister's wedding (played by "Community" and "Mad Men" star Alison Brie). And although the cast is rounded out by a »

Tonight on New Girl: Is There Enough Passion Between Jess and Russell? (Sneak Peeks)

Tonight on New Girl: Is There Enough Passion Between Jess and Russell? (Sneak Peeks)

Jess (Zooey Deschanel) met Russell's (Dermot Mulroney) ex-wife Ouli (Jeanne Tripplehorn) for the first time in last week's episode of New Girl. This encounter was less than fantastic after babysitting their daughter Sarah (Annalise Basso), descended into the kind of chaos that you would expect from New Girl. We will be spending some more time with Ouli tonight and this will lead to Jess questioning the not-so-fiery aspects of her relationship with Russell.

Meanwhile things are cooling down between Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) after their pregnancy scare but is this really what either of them wants? Nick (Jake Johnson) tries to channel all of his energy into something productive and comes up with tomatoes.

Ouli intimidates Jess and this matter isn't helped when Jess bumps into Russell's ex-wife at Russell's gym and »

Kirsten Dunst On The Road Poster

20 April 2012 4:36 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Kirsten Dunst/Camille On the Road poster If this isn't an all-out smile, I don't know what is. Those sparkling white teeth and healthy-looking gums belong to Kirsten Dunst. What a world! What a life! What a dentist!. I'm assuming Dunst's is the last On the Road "character" poster we're adding, as every major On the Road character has already gotten his/her poster. Dunst's actually came out before the ones for the film's three leads, Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, and Kristen Stewart. We're just late posting it. In On the Road, Dunst plays Camille, the wife of Dean Moriarty (Hedlund), who leaves her behind to go on the road with the much younger Marylou (Stewart). Camille is based on Carolyn Cassady, the first wife of the sexually adventurous Neal Cassady (Moriarty in the novel/film). Sissy Spacek played Carolyn Cassady in John Byrum's Heart Beat, based on Cassady's 1976 book of memoirs, »

5 Things We Learned About 'Freaks & Geeks' From The Av Club's Epic Walkthrough With Paul Feig

13 April 2012 7:57 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

While the show only lasted a season (although ratings were enough that, were it on today, it would be a big hit), so much of what's proved successful in the comedy world in the last decade can be traced back to " Freaks & Geeks." Executive produced by Judd Apatow, who's been behind many of the most successful comedies in recent years, from "Anchorman" to the upcoming "The Five-Year Engagement," and created by Paul Feig, who reunited with Apatow for last year's smash hit "Bridesmaids," it followed a group of nerds and burnouts in a Michigan high school.

And looking back, the cast is a who's who of the people that have made you laugh in recent years: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Martin Starr, Samm Levine and Busy Phillips were all in the original cast, along with Linda Cardellini, while her screen brother John Francis Daley wrote the screenplay for »

On The Rise 2012: 10 Actresses Poised For The Big Time

While there are still not enough good roles for women out there, particularly in mainstream Hollywood, that hasn't stopped a batch of young female stars from exploding from out of nowhere in recent years. Head-turning performances have helped launch faces like Carey Mulligan, Mia Wasikowska, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Felicity Jones and many others into the stratosphere, and the success last weekend of "The Hunger Games" has hopefully put to rest the fallacy that huge audiences won't turn up to big movies carried by a woman.

With that in mind, and hot on the heels of our ten picks for actors on the rise yesterday, we've chosen ten actresses who, while yet to be household names, have wowed audiences and casting directors in recent years, and look like strong contenders to headline the big movies of the future. Tonight on New Girl: First Date Disaster for Jess (Photos and Sneak Peaks)

The 'Fancyman' was introduced to the world of New Girl last week and tonight's episode sees Jess (Zooey Deschanel) going on a first date with Russell (Dermot Mulroney) and it doesn't go according to plan. Martin Starr (Freaks & Geeks, Party Down) is guest starring as Dirk, a friend of Nick's (Jake Johnson) from college and Winston (Lamorne Morris) starts to panic about his relationship with Shelby (Kali Hawk). Meanwhile Schmidt's (Max Greenfield) secret relationship with Cece (Hannah Simone) is about to become not-so-secret to one of the roommates.

Russell went from infuriating Jess to wooing her in the space of last week's episode after he criticized her teaching technique. With Nick's help Jess attempted to tell Russell that she wasn't going to apologize to him regarding her teaching methods, even if it meant that Russell would »

[SXSW Review] Frankie Go Boom

Jordan RobertsFrankie Go Boom is, above all, a good time. There’s many ways a comedy like this can fail, most run out of steam after promising first act, but this one keeps reinventing itself, throwing another wrench in gears. And the crowd I saw it with seemed to agree most of what’s thrown up lands with big laughs.

Frank (Charlie Hunnam) has been humiliated his entire life by his older brother Bruce (Chris O’Dowd), an aspiring filmmaker, and Frank’s embarrassments from the age onward to his wedding has been lensed by Bruce. Both men have ticks and shortcomings, Frank is a recently divorced writer working from a camper in Death Valley and he’s called back to the suburbs by his parents for Frank’s home coming from rehab. They criticize Frank’s life decisions while giving Bruce a free pass for his past indiscretions. »
