Nick Cannon: Don Cornelius' 'Soul Train' reboot is 'my passion project'

Nick Cannon is eager to put "Soul Train" back on track.
The singer, host of NBC's "America's Got Talent" and husband of Mariah Carey aims to put a reboot of the late Don Cornelius' iconic 1971-2006 music show into production by the end of the year. And Cannon's own entertainment history has given him an appreciation of the program from the inside looking out.
"That's my passion project right now, the thing that I'm the most excited about," he tells Zap2it. "It's been under wraps for the past couple of years -- I don't know how it got out there -- but it's really exciting to be able to be a part of something that's such an amazing legacy for our culture.
"A lot of people don't know it, but at the age of 15, I was a 'Soul Train' dancer. That was the first time I was ever on national television. »

The dog house has left the building. After 12 years of judging American Idol, Randy Jackson is leaving the popular Fox reality series. It’s the end of an era.
If you are still watching the long running singing competition, then you caught Ryan Seacrest’s remarks during the last telecast. The host opened that installment of American Idol with an acknowledgment of Jackson’s announcement about leaving the show after 12 often intense seasons.
Usually Thursday’s live results shows reveal which contestant would be leaving the show forever, but Seacrest halted that tradition for the bittersweet occasion. Diehard fans have seen such switch ups before, but this time it was in order to properly pay tribute to Jackson’s contribution to American television.
Deadline explained for those who missed it that Seacrest was seen tapping Jackson on the shoulder, and saying “maybe a heads up?” This inspired some laughs from the dog house. »

"American Idol" is reportedly getting new judges and a big makeover for Season 13.
According to TheWrap, current judges -- Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban -- will likely get the boot as part of a makeover to save the former ratings champ. "All four are gone," an insider told TheWrap. "They feel they've lost their core audience and they want it back."
Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe will also reportedly be shown the door as part of an effort to reinvigorate the series that's struggling in the ratings department. The rumored makeover also includes getting rid of dated themed-nights -- sorry, Burt Bacharach -- in an effort to attract a younger audience. The dated themes and stale format have been complaints of current "Idol" critics this season as the show has fallen to new ratings lows and is often bested by "The Big Bang Theory" and "Modern Family. »

When Ryan Seacrest was on "The Late Late Show," Craig Ferguson wanted to know about that so-called feud between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey on "American Idol." When he asked if it was a real thing, Seacrest stammered for a moment, which was all the answer Ferguson needed.
"It is! It is a real thing!” he exclaimed.
Seacrest said, “I think when you’re on television in front of millions, there’s always the potential for tension.”
Ferguson then asked if it was comparable to Seacrest's on-stage bickering with original judge Simon Cowell. "It became sport, sort of the volleying back and forth," Seacrest responded. "We looked forward to keeping score, and afterwards we’d go and break bread and have dinner. But it would definitely be a competitive thing during the show when he was on.”

American Idol has become such a mess in my eyes, what with all the drama between judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, I can hardly feign any enthusiasm for the show even when something positive is happening. We’re getting down to the final contestants, which means someone’s dreams are coming true, but every time the news is filled with something negative it takes away from what should be a joyous occasion for a lucky artist. I think everyone involved forgets what the show is really about; making dreams come true. They’re too involved in their own business. Take Mariah Carey for example.

Even if it's all singing and smiles on-stage at "American Idol," there has been a lot of trouble at the judges' table throughout Season 12. New judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey have notoriously been at each other's throat since early in the audition process.
It doesn't look like the feud has ended, and Nick Cannon -- Carey's husband -- blames the "Idol" producers for the whole mess.
Although Cannon had his own show -- "America's Got Talent" to promote, he spent almost three minutes of an interview with Los Angeles' Ktla News talking about Carey's dissatisfaction with the direction "American Idol" has taken this season. "She didn't sign up for that. She's like, 'Aw, man. I wish that experience could be about what this show is really about.' Because she really loves these contestants and has a connection with her fellow singers," Cannon said of his wife.

While making the media rounds today, Nick Cannon criticized Fox and American Idol producers for perpetuating a feud between his wife Mariah Carey and singer Nicki Minaj.
“It’s kind of unfortunate,” he told the ladies at The Talk. “When you see someone like my wife, who tries to remain classy and tries to take the high road, it feels like everybody else around it — including the network and the producers — feed into this whole sound bite drama. It feels like it lacks substance.”

Mariah Carey knew Fox was going to exploit tension between her and fellow "American Idol" judge Nicki Minaj, according her husband Nick Cannon.
While appearing on Ktla (below), Cannon said Carey was afraid the show would use a feud with Minaj to take away from the contestants and their journeys.
"My wife, foreseeing all of this, said tried to tell the network. She said, 'I don't think this is going to work, I'm afraid,'" Cannon explained. He added that Carey agreed to do the show for the "American Idol" brand, noting she's been a longtime fan of the series, but she did not want the feud to become "a thing." "'This is going to turn into one of those reality shows,'” Cannon recalled Carey telling him. “'I didn’t sign up to be on "Love And Hip Hop."'”

American Idol’s Mariah Carey is one unhappy diva because of the drama between her and fellow judge Nicki Minaj, according to Carey’s husband Nick Cannon. “She didn’t sign up for that,” he said today to La’s Ktla-tv morning show host Sam Rubin (video below). Michael Jordan married Yvette Prieto last weekend in Jupiter, Fl and Et has a look at the location said to have housed a thousand or so guests for the NBA star's wedding celebration!
In an aerial photo, courtesy of JeffRealty.com, we see Jordan's 40,000 sq. ft. wedding tent (5,000 sq. ft. larger than the former basketball player's 35,000 sq. ft. home) set on golfer Jack Nicklaus' driving range. It is reportedly the "largest wedding tent in history."
Jordan, 50, proposed to model Prieto over the Christmas holiday this past year. The wedding ceremony took place at Bethesda by the Sea Episcopal Church in Palm Beach, Florida -- the same church that provided the setting for Donald and Melania Trump's 2005 wedding.

The hunt for a new "Late Night" host has been on since it was confirmed that Jimmy Fallon's moving on up to "The Tonight Show" and now, there are some new names in the running. According to TV Guide, "Watch What Happens Live" host Andy Cohen and "America's Got Talent" host Nick Cannon are reportedly the alternatives should "Saturday Night Live" co-head writer Seth Meyers not pan out as the new "Late Night" host.
