2011: A Year in Review Part I

30 December 2011 7:27 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

2011 was one of the best years for film in recent years.  There are about 25 films that could have made my top ten list and each film in my top 5 could be my number one.  I saw about 100 films this year and I still wish I could have seen more.  I feel very comfortable with my top ten and I feel like it was a good representative of the year in film.  However I do feel that people looking at this article should go over to Sound On Sight and see all the staff’s individual lists, as well as the honorable mentions that just missed my list.  You will find a great collection of films on those lists.

1. Martha Marcy May Marlene

Directed by Sean Durkin

I saw Sean Durkin’s directorial debut in August and knew as soon as the last frame came up that this was the best picture of the year. »

Germain’s Top 10 Movies of 2011

30 December 2011 12:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

In 2011, I saw more new movies than I ever have in the past. Previous years I'd flirted with roughly two per week but, this year, thanks to a full Sundance Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, Butt-Numb-a-Thon and other events like AFI Fest and the Los Angeles Film Festival, that number jumped up to 167. Several of those won't be released until 2012 and others won't get released at all, but it's still a more than sufficient cross section of 2011 releases to adequately speak on the state of film in 2011 and give my top ten movies of the year. (Note: Any film that didn't get an Oscar qualifying 2011 theatrical run did not qualify for this list. That's just my personal rule.) For me, 2011 was the year of "good, but not great." You know the type. A film that does everything right, is entertaining, emotional, but doesn't stick with you once you've left the theater. »

Roadie Movie Review

30 December 2011 2:03 AM, PST | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Title: Roadie Director: Michael Cuesta (‘L.I.E.’) Starring: Ron Eldard (‘Super 8′), Bobby Cannavale, Jill Hennessy and Lois Smith (‘True Blood’) Rarely does a screenwriter-director have the courage to create an authentic main character who longs for, and struggles to let go of, the past. But Michael Cuesta, who penned the new drama ‘Roadie’ with his brother Gerald, and served as the film’s director, created a believable protagonist in Jimmy Testagross, who’s afraid to admit his professional failures and be himself. ‘Roadie’ is the ultimate testament to people who want to do what makes them happy, but succumb to the pressure of pleasing their families and friends. ‘Roadie’ chronicles the immediate »

Casting News: Harrison Ford Confirmed for Ender's Game; Four Join Lovelace Biopic

22 December 2011 11:24 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Earlier this month, Harrison Ford was targeted for the adaptation of Ender's Game, based on the 1985 novel by Orson Scott Card. Coming from the sci-fi/Western mash-up of Cowboys and Aliens, it would seem that Ford would want to stay away from yet another sci-fi movie, as the actor's resume likes to switch genres from project to project. But with Ford being cast in the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, Ender's Game seemed like a good possibility, and finally it's official.

THR reports that Ford has signed on to play Colonel Hyrum Graff, Commander of Training for the International Fleet. In Ender's Game, humanity has been decimated by an insect-like alien race, with the government enlisting gifted children into battle school to train them to aid in the fight against the invaders. Bullied Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield, Hugo) masters a zero-gravity, laser-tag game and Graff sees his potential for saving humanity. Abigail Breslin »

Hank Azaria, Maybe James Franco & More Join the Cast of 'Lovelace'

When it was first announced that Howl directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman were working on Lovelace, a film about Linda Boreman, aka Linda Lovelace, the world's first pornographic superstar who gained infamy after starring in Deep Throat, Hollywood's busiest man, James Franco, was lined up to play husband Chuck Traynor. James Franco Gears Up to Get Down in 'Lovelace'

20 December 2011 1:29 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Still riding high from getting his Nyu professor fired the summer blockbuster "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," James Franco is in talks to make a cameo appearance as the one and only Hugh Hefner in "Lovelace."

The drama, based on Eric Danville's biography, "The Complete Linda Lovelace," follows Linda Boreman's transformation into porn star Linda Lovelace, her rise to fame that climaxed (hee hee) with her 1972 flick "Deep Throat," and her subsequent conversion into the feminist, anti-porn activist Linda Marchiano. Sounds pretty complete to us.

The story will be told by three interviewers who cross paths with her at various stages of her life. We're guessing one interview per last name... and Franco showing up somewhere near the middle.

Amanda Seyfried is set to star as the titular female lead, with Peter Sarsgaard opposite, Variety reports. Hank Azaria, Wes Bently (yes, the guy from "American Beauty"), Bobby Cannavale, »

James Franco Eyes Cameo As Hugh Hefner In 'Lovelace'; Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth & Robert Patrick Join Cast

James Franco, who we've come to know and love as an actor who defies expectations, is eying a role as Playboy founder Hugh Hefner (after being initially offered the lead of Chuck Traynor) in "Lovelace," Variety reports. If the deal goes through it would reunite Franco with his "Howl" directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. He would be joining a cast that already includes Amanda Seyfried (as the famous "Deep Throat" porn star Linda Lovelace), Peter Sargaard (because whereever there's a weird movie about sex, Sarsgaard can be found) and a host of new cast members who have recently signed on. The trade is also reporting that several new high profile cast members have joined the project, including Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, and Mr.T-1000 himself, Robert Patrick. Azaria will play "Deep Throat" writer-director Jerry Damiano, Cannavale and Noth will play financiers Butchie Peraino and Anthony Romano, who, »

Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, and Robert Patrick Join Lovelace; James Franco in Talks to Cameo as Hugh Hefner

20 December 2011 11:51 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

As the two competing Linda Lovelace biopics continue to race toward the finish line, one moves closer to release as production on Lovelace began today.  Variety reports that Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale (Win Win), Chris Noth (Sex and the City), and Robert Patrick have all joined the cast of the now in-production indie. Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Howl), the film has Amanda Seyfried set to star as the titular porn star, with Peter Sarsgaard in place as Lovelace’s husband (whom she claims for coerced her into pornography). But that’s not all, as James Franco is also apparently in talks to appear in the film as one Hugh Hefner. Franco was initially eyed to take on Sarsgaard’s part, but the thought of Franco playing Hefner in full force is almost too good to be true. Franco’s role would be little more than a cameo, »
