Nick Whitfield: 'Film-making is a death-defying act'

24 September 2010 4:04 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

This Saturday's paper comes with a free guide to film-making. In this extract, Nick Whitfield, whose debut film, Skeletons, won acclaim earlier this year, urges aspirant directors to take courage and learn from their mistakes

The first thing to say is that this is film-making and nobody knows anything, except William Goldman (of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fame). And the only thing that he knows is that "Nobody Knows Anything".

I'd been on sets before but the closest I got to film school was reading David Mamet's book, On Directing Film. When I arrived on the set of my film, Skeletons, I was an amateur surrounded by professionals. By the end of the first six days, I'd doubled my total experience as a director on set.

I took the scenic route to becoming a writer-director. I was a professional actor straight from school but I had a »

New Trailer for Indie Venture 'Melancholy Fantastic'

27 August 2010 2:56 PM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

We've a new trailer embedded below for evil doll film The Melancholy Fantastic just for you. This one has a definite May-esque charm to it and features one downright creepy doll.

Described as a 'psychological thriller', The Melancholy Fantastic revolves around a delusional young girl, Melanie Crow, who's trying to recover from the harsh blow of her mother's recent suicide. Her best friend is a life-size doll and reports are that it just might talk. Melanie strikes up a new relationship with a young gothic fellow - who likely is going to make the mistake of misinterpreting her growing psychosis and insanity for normal old girlish quirkiness. His bad!

The Melancholy Fantastic is set during the Christmas season and is loosely inspired by several different novels. The strongest inspiratioin is from The Sickness Unto Death by Søren Kierkegaard, though there are also reportedly references to Parable of the Madman by »

Bruno Crémer obituary

25 August 2010 10:26 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

French actor famed for his long-running role as Simenon's Maigret

Georges Simenon described his creation Jules Maigret, the gruff, pipe-smoking, Parisian police inspector, thus: "His build was plebeian. He was enormous and bony. Hard muscles stood out beneath his jacket… Above all, he had his very own way of planting himself in a spot… He was a solid block and everything had to break against it." Simenon could have been describing the French actor Bruno Crémer, who has died of cancer aged 80. Crémer, who played Maigret on French television in 54 episodes over 14 years (from 1991 to 2005), had hard acts to follow in Pierre Renoir, Jean Gabin and Jean Richard in France, but the role fitted him as perfectly as the hat and heavy overcoat he wore most of the time.

Maigret was the hero of 75 novels, 28 short stories, many films and endless TV series in numerous languages, including Japanese. In the two British series, »

Suso Cecchi d'Amico obituary

1 August 2010 10:32 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Italian screenwriter who worked with directors such as Visconti and Zeffirelli

The Italian screenwriter Suso Cecchi d'Amico, who has died aged 96, collaborated on the scripts of more than 100 films, including Vittorio De Sica's Ladri di Biciclette (Bicycle Thieves, 1948), William Wyler's Roman Holiday (1953), Mario Monicelli's I Soliti Ignoti (Big Deal on Madonna Street, 1958) and Francesco Rosi's Salvatore Giuliano (1962). She also worked with Michelangelo Antonioni on Le Amiche (The Girlfriends, 1955) and Franco Zeffirelli on Jesus of Nazareth (1977), but she was best known for her creative contribution to the films of Luchino Visconti, including Il Gattopardo (The Leopard, 1963).

She was born Giovanna Cecchi in Rome to a Tuscan painter, Leonetta Pieraccini, and the literary critic Emilio Cecchi, a major figure in 20th-century Italian letters. For a few years in the early 1930s, before the Cinecittà studios were built in Rome, her father had been entrusted by Mussolini's government with »

'5150 rue des Ormes' on DVD in France on Sept. 21

26 July 2010 7:14 PM, PDT | The Cultural Post | See recent The Cultural Post news »

According to Amazon.fr, a website that allows you to buy DVD online, the Canadian thriller 5150, Rue des Ormes (5150 Elm's Way), an adaptation of Patrick Senécal's bestselling novel, will be released on DVD in France on September 21.

Here's the description of the synopsis taken from a review I wrote:

Yannick Bérubé (Marc-André Grondin) just got accepted at a cinema school. After he had moved in an appartment, he begins to film his first film project for school. While he was bycicling in a residential neighbourhood, Yannick falls of his bike. Because of the scratches on his hands and his elbow, he asks Jacques Beaulieu (Normand D'Amour), a cab driver who is not on a shift, to call a cab for him.

Since he has to wash the blood off his hands, Yannick does the mistake of entering Jacques's house. Furthermore, because he discovered an agonizing man kept in an empty room, »

Elzbieta Czyzewska obituary

7 July 2010 11:53 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Polish film star forced into exile by the communist authorities

By the mid-1960s Elzbieta Czyzewska, who has died aged 72, was considered one of the brightest stars of film, theatre and television in Poland. However, she became persona non grata in her own country, only a few months after she was celebrated as the "pride of her generation" on the cover of a Polish magazine.

In 1965 she was appearing in a Warsaw production of Arthur Miller's autobiographical play After the Fall, in the role apparently based on Marilyn Monroe. In the audience was the American journalist David Halberstam, a correspondent for the New York Times, who had interviewed Czyzewska the day before. The pair married that year but Halberstam was expelled from Poland by the authorities for writing articles that criticised the communist regime. The government also condemned Czyzewska for marrying a "Zionist intellectual", and she left to join »

'Twilight's' Kristen Stewart is going 'On the Road'

5 May 2010 6:19 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Kristen Stewart has already starred in the "Twilight" series, so why not another famous American written work?

The young actress has landed a role in "On the Road," an adaptation of Jack Kerouac's classic novel based on his life, reports USA Today.

"I am very much attached to a movie that has been trying to get made forever," she told the paper. "Not that this is going to help it, but maybe I can just brag a little bit. I am super excited about it, too. I am about to play Marylou in 'On the Road.' So that's a big deal."

Our K-Stew may only be 20, but she's very erudite and well read. Her favorite books are John Steinbeck's "East of Eden" and Albert Camus' "The Stranger." We're sure "Breaking Dawn" is at No. 3 ... or at least in the Top 10.

5150, Rue des Ormes (5150 Elm's Way)

3 February 2010 5:00 AM, PST | The Cultural Post | See recent The Cultural Post news »

Don't miscontrue my words: I'm a total fan of Patrick Senécal's novels and I own all of them. However, the mention of Éric Tessier, the director who slaughtered Sur le seuil, in the credit left me icy. Honestly, 5150, Rue des Ormes sure has its strong moments, but it remains an entertaining film at most.

Yannick Bérubé (Marc-André Grondin) just got accepted at a cinema school. After he had moved in an appartment, he begins to film his first film project for school. PC Peterson, Premature Ejaculator

26 January 2010 4:15 PM, PST | Movieline - TVline | See recent Movieline - TVline news »

Just got out of the Sundance press screening of Twelve, Joel Schumacher's attempt to fill the niche carved out last year at the fest by The Informers. The most notable part of the movie (apart from the critical laughter that greeted the closing credit quote from Albert Camus)? That'd be the first act presence of NYC Prep's ambiguously gay PC Peterson, who gets no lines but is nevertheless a heavily featured extra, playing a partying prep schooler (no!) who makes out with and feels up a girl (no?) and then prematurely ejaculates (oh). Camille is going to be irate about this for some reason! »
