The 20 Best TV Spin-off Series of All Time, Ranked
The early success of CBS’ new “The Big Bang Theory” prequel “Young Sheldon” is a reminder that often the most successful spin-offs look or feel completely different from their mother ship. “The Simpsons” was nothing like “The Tracey Ullman Show.” “Mork and Mindy” was set in a different time frame than “Happy Days.” And “Maude,” “The Jeffersons” and “Good Times” featured characters with a completely different mindset from “All in the Family’s” Archie Bunker.

Try as TV executives and creators might, it’s nearly impossible to replicate success in the same world or with many of the same characters. (Looking at you, “Joey” and “AfterMASH.”) Some of the best TV spinoffs succeed specifically because they approach a familiar template from a completely different angle. Spin-offs come in many forms: Some are continuations of series that have ended. Others follow popular characters on their own journeys. And some are simply planted into a hit show,

Lifetime Plans "Melrose Place" Tell-All TV Movie

In the 1990s, there was no bigger prime time soap than "Melrose Place" and now Lifetime has chosen it for the subject for its fourth 'unauthorized' tell-all film.

Starting life in 1992 as a more adult-centric spin-off of the popular teen soap "Beverly Hills 90210," 'Melrose' became a smash in its own right as the Aaron Spelling series explored the lives of twenty somethings in Los Angeles over the course of seven seasons and over two hundred episodes.

Courtney Thorne-Smith, Andrew Shue, Grant Show, Doug Savant, Marcia Cross, Daphne Zuniga, Laura Leighton, Jack Wagner, Thomas Calabro, Josie Bissett, Rob Estes, Brooke Langton, Jamie Luner, Alyssa Milano, Lisa Rinna, Vanessa Williams, Kelly Rutherford and Heather Locklear starred.

Michael Larkin and Howard Braunstein will executive produce, Dana Schmalenberg is penning and Mark Griffiths is directing. A premiere date has not yet been determined.

Heather Locklear: 'Melrose Place' stardom was 'such a fluke'

Heather Locklear is retaining her reputation as a show-booster.

She cemented it with the original "Melrose Place," which she helped make one of the 1990s' most buzzed-about series as Amanda Woodward, the well-tailored business shark and serial acquirer of other women's men. Locklear returns to weekly work when Season 3 of TNT's law drama "Franklin & Bash" starts Wednesday, June 19, but her return as Amanda on The CW's short-lived "Melrose" reboot reaffirmed to her that there are no guarantees.

"I think they should have brought some of the older characters back a little more, to introduce the new kids," Locklear reasons to Zap2it of having reunited with such other "Melrose" veterans as Thomas Calabro and Laura Leighton on the 2009-10 remake. "It's a little tougher just having a new cast and calling it the same thing. I think people get mad."

The CW's "90210" update will have lasted five seasons when its two-hour series finale airs Monday,

Glee Newcomer Jacob Artist on Dancing Dreams, Rap Nightmares and New-Girl Drama
Jacob Artist’s acting career only began in earnest last year — with guest roles on Melissa & Joey and Nickelodeon’s How to Rock — so not surprisingly, he says he’s finding it a little surreal to have a recurring role as Jake Puckerman (younger half-brother of Mark Salling’s bad boy Noah ‘Puck’ Puckerman) on Season 4 of Glee.

“I was a fan of the show before I auditioned, so now every time I go to Paramount and we’re shooting, it’s like an absolute dream come true,” says Artist.

There was a lot riding on last nights episode of Glee. Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Lea Michele) had their Nyada auditions. The boys rallied to help Puck (Mark Salling) graduate. And we got a glimpse into Beiste’s (Dot Marie Jones) unhappy marriage. The episode started with hope but ended on a somber note for everyone.

It turned out that Puck wasn’t quite ready to graduate. He was struggling in geography and his plan to pass was to woo the teacher. When she blew him off he performed a rage flied “School’s Out.” After a few days of playing hooky Pucks dad (Thomas Calabro) came along. At first you would think he came to talk to his son, but what he wanted was money. Seeing his father was the wake –up call Puck needed to graduate. 'Glee': Coach Bieste and Rachel get emotional during 'Choke'

Dot Marie Jones just sealed her second guest actress Emmy nomination with her stellar performance in the Very Special "Glee" episode "Choke," right? Coach Bieste has shown a real vulnerability over the past two seasons, and Jones did a great job in the poignant material she was given as Bieste struggles with domestic abuse by her new husband Cooter.

It's a shame she went back to him in the end, and even sadder that she had to lie about it to Sue. If it's handled anywhere near as well as the recent teen suicide plot, this storyline could be truly awesome.

Now, on to the titular "Choke" -- Rachel and Kurt finally had their Nyada auditions, and Kurt took a risk and absolutely nailed it while Rachel choked on "Don't Rain on My Parade," a song she's been belting since she was a toddler.

Lea Michele was stellar, and frankly
