Chicago – Debbie Reynolds, who began her movie star journey as a teenager during another show biz era, made her big splash in 1952’s “Singin’ in the Rain.” What followed was a long and varied career as a singer, dancer and respected film actress.

Born Mary Frances Reynolds in El Paso, Texas, she lucked into her career by winning a beauty contest, which included a contract with Warner Brothers. Making her debut in “June Bride,” she also scored a charted hit with the song “Aba Daba Honeymoon.”

Following her big break in Singin’ in the Rain, she worked steadily for the next several decades in film, stage and Las Vegas revue. Notable films include “Tammy,” The Tender Trap,” “The Catered Affair,” “How the West was Won,” “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” “Charlotte’s Web” and “Mother.”

Comedy Writer Larry Gelbart Dead At Age 81; "M*A*S*H" TV Series Among His Hits

12 September 2009 7:54 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

A valued alumni of TV's Golden Age of Comedy has passed away. Writer Larry Gelbart was part of Sid Caesar's legendary circle of writers in the 1950s. He also wrote the book for the hit play A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and co-wrote the blockbuster comedy film Tootsie. His greatest achievement was adapting Robert Altman's 1970 film M*A*S*H into a hit comedy TV series that ran for years. Most attempts to bring hit movies to the small screen fail, but Gelbart found the right blend of sarcasm and poignancy to make the show a hit with both audiences and critics. Upon hearing of his death, Woody Allen called Gelbart "the best comedy writer I ever knew and one of the best guys." For more on his life and career click here. »

The Beatles: Four Fab Performances For Screens Large And Small

9 September 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I'm not really sure that The Beatles were ever "bigger than Jesus," but they were still kind of a big deal. They made music that will be remembered through the ages and they were the focal point of what we nowadays think of offhandedly as a "pop culture phenomenon," one of the earliest really. Before "Twilight," before Britney Spears, before Michael Jackson... there was Beatlemania.

That said, the Fab Four weren't just musicians. That's what they were known for, sure, but the sort of fame they achieved has a tendency to open doors to other opportunities. Through the years, the four Beatles have all worked in Hollywood to varying degrees. And so, in honor of today's highly anticipated release of "The Beatles: Rock Band" -- not to mention the re-release of their entire catalog, newly remastered -- I give you these four fab screen performances from the Fab Four.

Working On Whatever With Woody:

Larry David, Patricia Clarkson and Evan Rachel Wood on orbiting the universe of Woody Allen

By

Alex Simon

Few, if any, figures in American film have had the career arc of Woody Allen. Born Allen Stewart Konigsberg, Allen cut his teeth on Sid Caesar’s TV landmark Your Show of Shows as a staff writer in 1950, while still in high school, and graduated to standup comedy. One of the nation’s hottest young comics in the early and mid-1960s, Allen wrote his first screenplay, What’s New Pussycat? in 1965, and also co-starred in the film, making his writing/directing debut with Take the Money and Run, in 1969.

Since then, Woody Allen has not only been one of America’s most beloved and unique voices in cinema, »

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 “I never worked with a stinker- how great is that?” Mitzi Gaynor said as she recalled working with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hammerstein.  Probably because the legendary actress, singer, and dancer never worked on any project that she did not make better.
