Q&A with A Christmas Horror Story Director Steve Hoban

2 October 2015 3:23 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

The cast and crew of A Christmas Horror Story have stuffed the cinematic stockings with a delightfully devious new take on the holiday season. With A Christmas Horror Story now out in select theaters and viewable on VOD and iTunes, Daily Dead caught up with Steve Hoban—one of the film's three directors—to discuss working with William Shatner, setting the horror anthology film in the same town from the Ginger Snaps movies, and much more.

Thanks for taking the time to converse with Daily Dead today. I really enjoyed A Christmas Horror Story and believe it will become a holiday cult classic that horror fans can happily unwrap each year. How did you get involved with this project and what appealed to you the most after reading the script for the first time?

Steve Hoban: Thank you for saying that. As true fans of the genre, we made »

Film Review: ‘A Christmas Horror Story’

30 September 2015 6:25 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Not the first, worst or most tasteless yuletide film frightfest by any means, “A Christmas Horror Story” offers five interwoven, variably comedic tales of terror set on Christmas Eve. None is particularly original (though there is one good final twist), but they’re all reasonably entertaining as executed by three Canadian helmers, including veteran genre producer Steven Hoban (“Splice,” the “Ginger Snaps” series), making his feature directorial bow. Even if the season to be jolly does seem to commence earlier every year, releasing this opus on Oct. 2 does feel a bit ridiculous. Still, that limited Stateside theatrical launch (simultaneous with VOD and iTunes) should prove useful in boosting rental visibility closer to the relevant holiday; the pic should also rack up healthy cable sales.

The four principal storylines all involve forms of supernatural mayhem visited upon the unwitting (but not, in Santa’s case, wholly unprepared) on the night before Christmas. »

A Christmas Horror Story Review

27 September 2015 10:01 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Even though Halloween hasn’t passed just yet, I can’t help myself from getting the slightest bit giddy about my favorite time of the year to be a horror fan. No, I’m not talking about October’s scare-filled holiday, but the time of year when we board up our doors and pray that Krampus doesn’t come looking for naughty boys and girls to kidnap. I’m talking about Christmas, a time of psychotic mall Santas, zombie elves, illegal tree cutting, and the unholiest of all the North Pole’s enemies, Krampus himself. Those are the tinsel-draped nightmares that await you in this year’s A Christmas Horror Story, which should hold holiday horror fiends over until Michael Dougherty unleashes his own brand of X-Mas terror on the world in Krampus. Deck the halls and batten down the hatches – all signs are pointing to a bloody, violent Christmas this year. »

Frightfest 2015: ‘A Christmas Horror Story’ Review

Anthologies have made something of a comeback in recent years, at least in the horror genre, with films likes of V/H/S and its sequels, the low-budget Theatre of the Deranged and P.O.E.franchises, or films like The Theatre Bizarre and Trick r Treat, which both played at Frightfest events in the past, finding fans acros the globe. However despite this rebirth, the 80s are still the heyday of the horror anthology. Maybe that’s all about to change.

It started with Trick r Treat. For many Michael Dougherty’s film is the standard-bearer of the modern anthology. He did set the bar high, very high, but it seems at this years Frightfest that bar has »
