Gerard Butler's pagan New Year's Eve

31 December 2012 8:01 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Gerard Butler is going to a pagan festival to celebrate New Year's Eve. The 'Playing for Keeps' actor returns to his native Paisley, Scotland most years to be with his family, and will be taking part in the traditional celebrations to cast out evil spirits as she sees 2013 in. He said: 'I love New Year's Eve. I often end up in my local village in Scotland where my parents now live, and they have this pagan festival where everybody lights these wooden torches and marches around the village to cast out evil spirits. It's amazing, it's one of the coolest things.' Gerard, 43, had some ups and downs in 2012, with him completing three weeks in the »

Safety Not Guaranteed | Jack Reacher | Midnight's Children | Grabbers | Zaytoun | Parental Guidance

Safety Not Guaranteed (15) (Colin Trevorrow, 2012, Us) Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass, Jake Johnson, Karan Soni, Jenica Bergere. 86 mins

A man puts an ad in the local paper seeking a companion for his time-travel mission. Is this a prelude to a sci-fi adventure or an inventive lonelyhearts ad? We're strung along as to whether or not this guy's genuine for so long, there's room to smuggle in a relaxed indie romcom in the interim – Plaza is great company as she forges a connection with the paranoid inventor (Duplass). The sci-fi element isn't quite a red herring, but by the time it flowers, we've already learned plenty about living in the past.

Jack Reacher (12A) (Christopher McQuarrie, 2012, Us) Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins. 130 mins

After the atrocity of Rock Of Ages, Cruise is back in his comfort zone as Lee Child's lone-wolf military detective, »

My Top 10 Best Movies of 2012! Check Out Runners-Up, Dreaded Worst!

28 December 2012 7:46 AM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

2012 was a great year at the movies. I could easily create a Top 20 list so it was very hard to narrow it down to just the 10 best. But after many hours of tinkering, I finally came up with my Top 10 Best Movies of 2012. See my list below (video below too!), plus the runners-up and the dreaded worst films of the year! Oh, and for the first time, "Twilight" was not on my worst!

1. .Argo. . Ben Affleck creates a riveting political thriller that is as emotionally potent as it is funny. The script by Chris Terrio ably captures the tension of the Iran Hostage Crisis and the cast is game to offer levity. Simply the best film of the year.

2. .Les Miserables. . The film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical about the Paris Uprising of 1832 is a sweeping epic with a melodramatic flair. Hugh Jackman carries the film from start to finish as Jean Valjean, »

Judy Greer: 'I get flashed all the time'

27 December 2012 4:00 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Quirky and upfront, the actor isn't your typical Hollywood veteran. She tells Hermione Hoby about her latest film, Playing For Keeps, her Broadway debut, and the variety of ways Arrested Development fans show their appreciation

Judy Greer has made around 80 movies over almost 15 years in Hollywood. But she appears to be oblivious to the protocol of the actor interview. She comes into the restaurant, makes the "there you are" hands gesture, as if we're old friends finally managing to meet up for lunch, and launches straight into confessional mode: "Oh my God: I totally just had like a 10-minute conversation with someone and I've got no idea who they were."

She also says "fuck" a lot, which strikes an odd note in this place – a muzak-oozing timewarp of a midtown Manhattan restaurant, all obsequious waiters and swaths of peach linen. Halfway through an answer she breaks off to frown at »

Can the Romantic Comedy Be Saved?

27 December 2012 8:01 AM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

It was not that long ago when romantic comedies were a reliable date-night staple at the box office. It was a carefree, frothy time, when Julia, J. Lo, Kate, Katherine, Sandra, and Reese could show up onscreen, meet cute with just about any handsome male specimen, and pull in seven figures. But audiences seem to be falling out of love with the genre: The near-total rejection of Gerard Butler’s Playing for Keeps ($12 million, and fading fast) is only the latest casualty.Earlier this year, Wanderlust ($17 million) and The Five-Year Engagement ($28 million) fizzled, while the genre’s once-reigning doyenne, Reese Witherspoon, saw her hybrid action/rom-com, This Means War, met with yawning indifference: It grossed just $54 million domestically, ten million less than its explosion-heavy budget. The highest-grossing rom-com of the year was Kevin Hart’s Think Like a Man ($91 million), and that film never truly broke out beyond its predominantly »

Gerard Butler aims to go spiritual with New Year resolution

25 December 2012 6:41 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Gerard Butler says his New Year resolution for 2013 is to take a spiritual and more introspective approach to life.

It was a near-death experience that prompted the 43-year-old to re-evaluate his existence.

Butler said: "Next year my resolution is to embark on a lot of internal, more spiritual things, and explore that side of my life."

After he almost died in a surfing accident in 2011 while filming Chasing Mavericks, the Scottish-born actor says he now has a different perspective.

Gerard, who played the role of champion surfer Rick 'Frosty' Henson, was hit by a freak wave at Maverick's, a surfing spot south of San Fransisco, and trapped underwater as a succession of large waves rolled over him.

He was eventually pulled onto a jet ski and taken to a nearby hospital.

Butler said: "That accident made me reassess a lot of stuff. On the positive side, it made me realise »

Playing for Keeps Interview – Gerard Butler Discusses Football and Near-Death Experiences

24 December 2012 4:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

As an actor there are often opportunities that arise whereby you can fulfil your lifelong ambitions, or at least to pretend to. Whether that be to fly to the moon, or wield a pistol in a Southern American desert, it’s a profession where actors can fulfil those dreams they had as young children. And for Gerard Butler he has done just that, playing as a professional footballer for his boyhood club Celtic in Gabriele Muccino’s Playing for Keeps.

Playing for Keeps follows the tale of George Dryer, a former footballer who, following a career-ending injury, is now washed up with little money nor prospects. However, when he takes over his sons’ football team, he hopes for the opportunity to finally form a bond between the two and start afresh – until the soccer moms start throwing themselves at him.

Butler discusses with us what it was like to pretend to be a Celtic player, »

Playing for Keeps Review

21 December 2012 8:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Gabriele Muccino, known predominantly for his 2006 feature The Pursuit of Happyness, returns with Playing for Keeps, a picture that has that early 1990′s feel to it, but not in a good way.

Unsurprisingly, writer Robbie Fox last wrote a screenplay in 1993 with So I Married an Axe Murderer, and it really shows. Sometimes films don’t look too promising from the outset, but then proceed to pleasantly surprise you. Unfortunately on this occasion, this one is as bad as it looks.

Gerard Butler plays George Dryer, a former professional footballer who had once played for Liverpool, before moving to the Mls where he suffered a career ending injury. Now washed up and in need of some quick cash, he attempts to turn his life around and begins by reconnecting with his son Lewis (Noah Lomax), and ex-wife Stacie (Jessica Biel), who, much to George’s displeasure, is soon to remarry. »
