The Wall Street Journal published an odd feature today elaborating on documentarian Ric Burns's little-known in-house film commissioned by Goldman Sachs. You might best recognize Burns as the director of the epic PBS series New York and as the co-director (with his brother Ken) of the landmark documentary The Civil War. You might not recognize Burns as a filmmaker like hundreds (if not thousands) of others who take private industrial gigs between their more commercial projects. Which somehow seems to be giving folks ethical brain cramps today. One question: Why? »

The Wall Street Journal today raises interesting issues in revealing that documentary filmmaker Ric Burns has been quietly getting paid by Goldman Sachs to make a film about the brokerage house--with Goldman Sachs reportedly maintaining editorial control. This might well have seemed like a harmless industrial film and a way for a journalist to make some freelance income when the project began in 2007, long before the financial meltdown. Given a recent fraud investigation, the scrutiny on Goldman Sachs' derivatives operations and the hypersensitivity to Wall Street in general, it's a tough situation to be for a journalist to be in. Even though the film was never meant for public consumption. Burns, who with brother Ken is created the PBS series The Civil War and many other important works, was recently outspoken when Crude documentary director Joe Berlinger was ordered to turn over outtake footage to Chevron, telling The New York »

The ongoing saga of the class action lawsuit, Aguinda v. Chevron, originally filed in 1993 by the people of Ecuador whose rainforest land had been contaminated by oil production practices, and documented on film by Joe Berlinger in Crude, has taken a new turn. Chevron's latest diversionary and delaying tactic is to engage in a widespread and unprecedented legal assault on the First Amendment in their attempt to force Berlinger, the celebrated independent documentarian, to turn over more than 600 hours of private film outtakes from Crude. Chevron's legal tactic has attracted widespread criticism from prominent individuals across the media community, including actor and filmmaker Robert Redford, journalist Bill Moyers, bestselling author John Perkins, documentarians Michael Moore and Ric Burns, the Director's Guild of America, the Writer's Guild of America, and others. Virtually every major U.S. media outlet, including the NY Times, »

In this morning’s roundup of movie news ‘n’ notes from around the web, documentaries are under attack, and critics bust the "Robin Hood" embargo.
Documentary director Ric Burns tells the New York Times that the recent court ruling ordering the director of “Crude” to turn over his footage to Chevron jeopardizes the trust that a filmmaker must gain with his sources, possibly endangers the art of documentary filmmaking, and “contributes to a general culture of contempt for investigative journalism.” Then Dave Itzkoff, who tal »

PBS' "American Experience" presents a new documentary by famed filmmaker Ric Burns. It is titled Into the Deep: America, Whaling & the World and it gives an extensive view of the American whaling industry. It begins with the pilgrims coming to this country in 1620 and soon after beginning to butcher the whales that washed up on the coast of New England. When they saw how much use they could make of the whale's oil and other portions of its body they began to explore the ocean off the coast and slaughtered the whales at sea. This whaling process was so successful the industry spread around the world and long, arduous voyages followed. One of these "journeys" is followed closely by Burns. It is the voyage of the good ship Essex and it is a tale of tragedy. The story of »

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job. »
