‘The Phoenix Incident’ Review

Stars: Michael Adamthwaite, Troy Baker, James L. Brewster, James C. Burns, Holgie Forrester, Karl Girolamo, Matthew Grant Godbey, William Goldman, Yuri Lowenthal, Elise Muller, Liam O’Brien | Written and Directed by Keith Arem

Strange and otherwise terrifying things tend to happen on Friday the 13th, at least according to superstition and a certain horror franchise featuring a machete-wielding maniac, but it was on Thursday the 13th of March, in 1997, that the residents of Phoenix, Arizona experienced a good deal of unusual activity. On that night, an unidentified flying object was spotted and filmed by thousands of people in both Phoenix and Sonora, Mexico, and to date, the strange v-shaped pattern of lights has never quite been explained – at least not in any sort of satisfying way.

Leave it to a horror movie to come along and offer up a possible explanation.

Movie Review – The Phoenix Incident (2015)

The Phoenix Incident, 2015.

Written and Directed by Keith Arem.

Starring Troy Baker, Elise Muller, James C. Burns, Karl Girolamo, William Goldman and Mason Shea Joyce.

Synopsis:

A number of ‘missing person’ cases are reported in Phoenix, Arizona when an unexplained light appears in the sky one night in 1997.

When talent such as Keith Arem decides to step out of the video game arena and dip his toe into the waters of full on movie making, you cant help but feel a mix of joy and fear. With so many great games under his belt such as a huge chunk of the Call of Duty series, Darksiders 1 & 2, Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within (arguably the best of the reboot trilogy) and the simply fantastic Metro 2033, his skill for directing some of the most interesting interactive stories to date should mean the transition is an absolute no brainer. Yet, as with many who have tried,

Afm: Udo Kier and James C. Burns Join 'Courier X'
Veteran German actor Udo Kier (Nymphomaniac), and Transformers actor James C. Burns have signed on to star in Courier X, a conspiracy thriller about the 1996 crash of Twa flight 800. The 1996 crash, which killed all 230 passengers on board, was, at the time, the second-deadliest airline accident ever in the United States. Several conspiracy theories have emerged following the incident, which speculate that the crash was due to a terrorist strike, a U.S. Navy missile test gone wrong or an onboard bomb. Courier X links the CIA to the crash, with Burns playing a CIA field

Film Review: ‘Coldwater’

Film Review: ‘Coldwater’
Coldwater” is the story of what happens to a baby-faced hunk after his mom sends him to a juvenile rehabilitation facility. Never mind that he sells drugs, starts fights at parties and is directly responsible for the death of an innocent friend. As played by heartthrob-in-the-making P.J. Boudousque, the character is evidently just too cute to deserve rehabilitation. A passion project more than a decade in the making for director Vincent Grashaw, this uneven arthouse- and VOD-bound indie — released unrated, but suitable for teens — lies somewhere between indignant expose and unusually tasteful exploitation pic, with shower scenes and sweaty young delinquents aplenty.

Though it never strays far from the prison-abuse-movie playbook, “Coldwater” doesn’t exactly look or feel like other examples of the genre, hewing closer to the aesthetic found in Bruce Weber’s Abercrombie & Fitch photography. Bathed in a rich, golden glow, the pic has an almost dreamlike feel to it.

‘A Certain Justice’ DVD Review

Stars: Cung Le, Dolph Lundgren, Vinnie Jones, Gianni Capaldi, Briana Evigan, James C. Burns, Robert Lasardo, Sean O’Bryan | Written by James Coyne | Directed by Giorgio Serafini, James Coyne

A Certain Justice, aka Puncture Wounds, is the latest film from the foursome of Giorgio Serafini, Dolph Lundgren, Vinnie Jones and Gianni Capaldi, who previously worked together on Hard Rush (aka Ambushed) and Blood of Redemption. This time round the group is joined by Ufc Fighter-turned action star Cung Le (from the awesome Dragon Eyes) and one of my favourite female stars working in Hollywood today, Briana Evigan.

The film tells the story of soldier John Nguyen, who returns home from a traumatic tour of duty in Iraq struggling with Ptsd. What little peace he had managed to build around him is shattered one fateful day when he rescues a local call girl from a group of violent pimps, killing one and severely injuring the other.

Film Review: ‘All Together Now’

Film Review: ‘All Together Now’
The title of “All Together Now” speaks directly to this odd but likable little picture’s infectious, inclusive spirit. A “hangout” movie in the truest sense, set in and around a multi-act punk/noise rock concert, first-time director Alexander Mirecki’s loosely constructed hybrid of music docu and coming-of-age drama follows a couple dozen teens, twentysomethings and chaperoning middle-agers as they drift in and out of each other’s lives over a few brief hours in the woods, illuminated by the flickering bonfire light. Though its ambitions are modest, “All Together Now” casts an undeniable spell, of which fests with an eye toward microbudget emerging helmers should take particular note.

The concert is the brainchild of Ron (indie stalwart Lou Taylor Pucci), a promoter so soft-spoken and easygoing he might easily be mistaken for a spectator. The actual ticket holders — though it’s not even clear that there are tickets

Coldwater | Review - SXSW Film 2013

Brad (P.J. Boudousqué) is a troubled teenager who is abducted from his home in the middle of the night — but, don’t worry, his mother (Raquel Gardner) has given her consent. He is driven in a van to a reform facility located in the middle of the wilderness. At least 20 miles of harsh terrain away from the nearest town, Brad and his cohorts are completely cut off from society, one of many tactics used by the Coldwater facility to break the spirits of the inmates. Colonel Frank Reichert (James C. Burns) runs a strict military-like operation, with no room for sympathy or compassion. Fear of punishment is the main motivator in forcing the inmates to conform with society’s rules; but, because of blind trust, the Colonel is unaware of just how horrendous the punishments rendered by the Coldwater counselors can be. While the Colonel wrestles with his own personal demons,

SXSW 2013 Review: ‘Coldwater’ Is a Strongly Acted Cautionary Tale Weakened By a Leaky Script

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to strangers who pull you from your bed, handcuff you and put a cloth sack over your head. The last thing you hear as they toss you screaming into the back of a van is your mother saying “I love you.” This is how we meet Brad Lunders (P.J. Boudousqué). He’s a teenager mired in a life of drug dealing and other criminal acts, and after a recent incident that resulted in a death his mother has chosen an extreme option intended to keep Brad out of jail. He’s been shipped off to a “residential treatment program for troubled youths,” but while that sounds like a professional and responsibly run place, it just may be anything but. Coldwater is a beautifully acted and shot drama about troubled kids forced to grow up quickly by even more troubled adults. It’s an engaging eye-opener that moves from
