The Sunshine Boys; AirHotel; Detroit – review

21 May 2012 6:09 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Savoy, London; Holt Hall, Norfolk; Cottesloe, London

On the screen in 1975 it was Walter Matthau and George Burns. In a 1996 television adaptation it was Woody Allen and Peter ("Columbo") Falk. Now it's Danny DeVito and Richard Griffiths. It will always be the casting that draws audiences to The Sunshine Boys. That's just as well: Neil Simon's play is a wheezy old thing.

Griffiths and DeVito look right – which is to say mismatched – as a resurrected (just) vaudeville comedy duo who were once dependent though bickering, and are, in old age, estranged. It's not just the sheer difference in size – the Mountain and the Molehill – but the gait, the gestures, the speed across the stage, that makes the two men appear to have crash-landed from different planets.

Griffiths presides over his huge bulk like a kindly ruler quelling a potential revolution: even when flustered he moves with a light-footed grace. »

Alice Cooper talks about his 'Dark Shadows' cameo -- and his many other memorable onscreen adventures

3 May 2012 8:40 AM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

It doesn’t come as a huge surprise to discover horror movie-lovers Alice Cooper and Tim Burton had plenty to talk about when the rocker turned up to film a cameo in the director’s new, Johnny Depp-starring movie Dark Shadows. “We had dinner one night in London and we both knew every point of reference,” Cooper recalls. “If he would say, ‘Suspiria’ I would say ‘Dario Argento.’ I see the humor in horror as much as Tim or Johnny does, so we really do fit together.”

Catskills Fire Destroys Original 'Dirty Dancing' Resort

19 April 2012 10:18 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

A bunch of brave firemen had the time of their life putting out a massive blaze that took down a piece of very cherished movie history.

MSNBC reports that over 43 fire companies and 300 firefighters had to rally together to douse the flames that devoured the Catskills condominium complex formerly known as Brown's Hotel, which inspired the affluent resort Kellerman's in "Dirty Dancing," the favorite movie of nearly every member of the female gender.

While no one was killed or injured in what is being called the "largest fire in Catskills history," many residents lost their homes and belongings, as well as the fantasy that Patrick Swayze would someday lift them up in the air in a dancehall. This is the latest in a series of tragedies to befall the legacy of the film, after Swayze's death and Jennifer Grey's nose job.

Dick Clark 1929-2012: America's Rockin' Host

18 April 2012 3:58 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Dick Clark died this morning after 82 years of life and about 60 years in show business. The last 30 were marked by affectionate jokes that he looked fantastic for his age and would probably live forever. Eventually the record stopped, as it must for everyone, but Clark's title as "America's Oldest Teenager" seems likely to stand unchallenged. "I've been watching Dick Clark ever since I was a little kid," said vaudevillian George Burns, who was born 34 years before Clark.During the early peak of his career, Clark hosted American Bandstand, the show that helped rock and roll go mainstream. The program began its 37-year run in 1952 as "Dick Clark's Caravan of Music," airing on Philadelphia's Wfil, an ABC affiliate. In 1957, it moved up to the network. Under the command of Clark, who served as guiding producer as well as host, the series didn't just carve out a »

The Simpsons Arcade – Xbox Live Download Review

17 March 2012 8:41 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Just under  a year ago we here at What Culture posted an article looking at 10 classic games that deserved an Xbox Live or Psn remake and it seems that creators of a certain game read this site as available now for download is the 1991 classic game masterpiece The Simpsons Arcade.

In recent years we have been treated to many new takes of classic games or long awaited sequels, that always disappoint fans who have fond childhood memories of the originals. Thankfully Konami, the people behind T.S.A, decided against the idea of completely revamping an old game and simply transported an already great game into the future by releasing it for console download.

The Simpsons Arcade is a four player co-op game that allows the players to take control of either Homer, Bart, Lisa or Marge as they try and rescue Maggie from the evil and slightly camp clutches »

Best Movies Of 2011 – Lominac’s View

12 March 2012 1:47 PM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Just to add even more to the barrage of Best you’ve certainly received already, we have another version for you. Catch my list here, if you haven’t already.

Every year around this time we get the barrage of “top ten” lists, and every year around this time I feel out of the loop. Not having the privilege of living in the vicinity of a major metropolitan area, many of the critics’ favorite films of the “year” do not actually see the light of day in my part of the country until well after the new year, leaving me to play catch up about a month or so later.

Unfortunately, this is yet again the case in 2011, subsequently seriously handicapping my own formation of any “best of” list in a timely manner. Despite this set back, the change over from one year to the next is an irresistibly retrospective wellspring, »

Christopher Plummer’s win for Best Supporting Actor tonight also earns him another special distinction: oldest Oscar winner at age 82.

“You’re only two years older than me, darling,” Plummer said to his newly-won statuette at the 84th annual telecast. “Where have you been all my life? I have a confession to make. When I first emerged from my mother’s womb, I was already rehearsing my Oscar speech.”

Plummer surpasses George Burns who was 80 in 1975 when he won for his role in The Sunshine Boys and Jessica Tandy, also 80, when she won in 1989 for Driving Miss Daisy.

And The Oscar Goes To ... Someone Who Didn't Deserve It.

23 February 2012 11:59 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

It still provides a chuckle

The history of The Academy Awards is littered with strange and inexplicable happenings: Revealed shortcomings, spontaneous pushups, "The winner is Paul Newman," Sandahl Bergman's interpretive dance to "Eye Of The Tiger" (admittedly, one of the highlights of my life).

And of course ... Snow White rolling on the river.

But aside from the odd ceremony moments, and the fashion drama on the red carpet, it's the Oscar errors in judgment that we remember the most.

A few weeks ago we discussed the Oscar nomination Sins Of Omission, so let's now take a look at the performers who actually won, and how The Academy still blew it.

The 2005 nominees for Best Actor were:

Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote

Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain

David Strathairn in Good Night and Good Luck

Terrence Howard in Hustle & Flow

Joaquin Phoenix in Walk The Line

10 reasons to celebrate the genius of The Simpsons

18 February 2012 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

It's the show's 500th episode this weekend – so what are the secrets of its success?

This weekend The Simpsons broadcasts its 500th episode. Astonishingly, the series has been going for 23 mainly glorious years.

Recent online discussion over the "best episode ever" has already caused, depending on your point of view, validation of the power of honest, muscular human debate or an existential crisis about the ability of our race to live on the planet together, or spell correctly.

There's little doubt that we have stopped watching in quite such exuberant droves as before: in 2002 a Mori poll showed 66% of Britons were interested in the lives of the Simpsons as opposed to 18% in the lives of the royals; that has surely changed. South Park, Family Guy and others have taken over, and the overarching general feeling is that the best work was done in the first 15 years.

So we won't give you the best episode, »

The Simpsons at 500: your top 10 episodes

16 February 2012 8:04 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

We asked you for your favourite Simpsons episode. Surprisingly the top 10 were made during the first decade of the show

To celebrate the 500th episode of The Simpsons, which airs on 19 February in the Us, we asked you to nominate your favourite episodes ever so we could put together The Simpsons Guardian Readers Top 10. Rather than deploy some complex Eurovision style ranking system, we kept it simple and each episode mentioned in the 1002 comments received one vote – and no that didn't mean people who nominated "the one with Dustin Hoffman" (Lisa's Substitute) were ignored. So here, in reverse order, is what you voted for …

Number 10: A Streetcar Named Marge (Season 4, Episode 2)

This episode has it all. Great songs ("you can always rely on the comfort of strangers"); dozens of film parodies (including a subplot involving Maggie's Great Escape at the Ayn Rand School for Tots); Marge channeling »

The 10 Most Awesomely Terrible Super Bowl Halftime Shows Of All Time

1 February 2012 3:01 PM, PST | BestWeekEver | See recent BestWeekEver news »

I’m not excited whatsoever for Madonna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show. Not because I dislike Madonna or think that she’ll do a bad job; on the contrary, I’m sure she’ll play the hits and bring out A-list special guests galore and make a giant entertaining spectacle and it’ll all be completely polished and well-done. The only problem is, there’s nothing memorable or transcendent about ‘good’ Super Bowl Halftime Shows. Prince and Bruce Springsteen each did about as well as a Super Bowl performer could possibly aim for, and both performances still boiled down to just 12 pretty good minutes from musicians whose fans have assuredly seen them do far better 2-3 hour concerts on other occasions. The biggest standout moment was still Springsteen sliding into the camera. The only time we remember a Super Bowl Halftime Show is when it is memorably bad. That is to say, »

Blues Singer Etta James Dead at 73

20 January 2012 10:48 AM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Blues and jazz singer Etta James died early this morning at Southern California's Riverside Community Hospital from complications of leukemia. She was 73. In 2009, James had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. James' first album, "At Last!," was released in 1961. She won her first of six Grammys 33 years later, for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for the tribute album "Mystery Lady (Songs of Billie Holiday)". Despite battling heroin addiction in the '60s and '70s — in addition to other substance-abuse issues in later years — James released 27 albums during a career that lasted close to half a century. On the IMDb, James has only two credited film appearances: cameos in Nick Castle's Tap (1989), starring Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr, and Michael Schultz's musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978). The latter film was a monumental flop despite the presence of the then-popular Bee Gees, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, and Peter Frampton, »
