The Fitzgerald Family Christmas (review)

20 December 2012 4:02 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

I had planned to start off this review wondering just where the hell this Edward Burns has been all these years. The Fitzgerald Family Christmas is so achingly lovely a film, so full of bittersweet melancholy and yet so fixedly hopeful without ever having to touch on the sentimental, that it reminded me so hard why I fell in love with Burns’ work with his Brothers McMullen all those years ago. I felt like he’d abandoned us since 2001’s Sidewalks of New York (another perfect film). But then I looked at Burn’s IMDb page and discovered that he’s made a bunch of movies between then and now and I’d never even heard of them. How can that be? How can I be a clued-in critic, a film professional, for Christ’s sake, and not have been aware of his work? How is it that his unpretentious »

Tom Rothman Among Sundance Fest Jurists

19 December 2012 2:56 PM, PST | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

I’ve heard more than once from buyers and sellers who work night and day at the Sundance Film Festival say that they’d love to leave their jobs, come back, take in a few movies and spend most of their time skiing. Well, Tom Rothman has exited Fox, but don’t expect him to have much time for the slopes. Rothman has been named to Sundance’s U.S. Dramatic Jury, along with Ed Burns, Rodrigo Prieto and several others. So expect Tom to spend his time in darkened rooms once the festival starts January 17 and runs through January 27.  Here’s the official list of Sundance jurists: Park City, Ut — Sundance Institute announced today 19 members of five juries awarding prizes at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, January 17-27 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. Short Film Awards will be announced at a ceremony on January 22 at Park City’s Jupiter Bowl, »

Why We Need to Remember Our Diy Roots When Crowdfunding and Ask for More than Money

18 December 2012 7:41 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

When Emily Best spoke to Indiewire last month about her new crowdfunding platform, Seed&Spark, which also allows for online distribution, we were intrigued by her story of receiving support for her film "Like the Water," in unexpected packages, namely in donated services, loaned locations, and goods needed for production. In the following first person article, Best explains the Diy lessons she learned from crowdfunding before crowdfunding was "a thing," and how that led her to found Seed&Spark. Towards the end of 2010, Caitlin FitzGerald was making "Newlyweds" with Ed Burns. She was also starring in a site-specific production of "Hedda Gabler." This is where I met her (playing Thea to her Hedda), along with Caroline von Kuhn and three other remarkable women who would change my life forever. Together we wanted to make more work, possibly theater. And over drinks one night Caitlin would convince us all, thanks to Eddie’s. »

The Fitzgerald Family Christmas Review - Ed Burns returns with his most enjoyable working-class comedy in years

Review of The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, starring Edward Burns and Connie Britton It all looks so easy, these working-class comic dramas from the mind of actor and filmmaker Ed Burns, who consistently mines his Long Island upbringing and feelings of Catholic guilt for an easygoing holiday tale like The Fitzgerald Family Christmas. Telling stories based in Blue-collar, suburban Tri-State homes instead of 3D fantasy landscapes; focusing on familiar, next-door type characters and long stretches of everyday chatter, a moviegoer falls into the trap that Burns style of social realism simply requires the assembly of longtime friends and colleagues and a cameraman in the corner of the room. »

Edward Burns on How Tyler Perry Helped Inspire 'The Fitzgerald Family Christmas' and a 'Brothers McMullen' Sequel

6 December 2012 4:45 PM, PST | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

When you have a conversation about New York filmmakers, you normally throw out names like Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee and Woody Allen. But then there's Edward Burns, who over the course of almost 20 years has carved out his own little career as a quintessential New York filmmaker, and the time has now come for us to include him in that conversation too. No one captures the highs and lows of blue-collar life in and around New York City the way Burns does. His upbringing as part of a working-class Irish-American family on Long Island is what inspired his first film, The Brothers McMullen, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 1995. It's a film Burns will return to in 2015 when he reunites the cast for a sequel 20 years later, and it's a mood -- a...

The Fitzgerald Family Christmas: Review

6 December 2012 7:25 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Returning to the Irish Catholic roots he explored in his 1995 debut breakout film The Brothers McMullen, prolific actor/filmmaker Edward Burns delivers an overstuffed holiday feast in The Fitzgerald Family Christmas. This tale of a dysfunctional family whose members experience enough personal crises to fuel a dozen films is a virtual compendium of clichés, but the star’s sheer likeability makes it go down as easily as a cup of eggnog. Burns plays Garry, the de facto patriarch of a Queens, New York brood that includes six siblings and his soon to be 70-years-old mother Rosie (Anita Gillette). The
