Katherine Heigl: What’s With the Anita Bryant Look? What’s Next: Orange Juice Ads and Public Bigotry?

11 June 2010 11:21 AM, PDT | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

Look, Katherine: We know you’re not in any way a bigot, a gay basher, or a disgraced orange-juice spokeswoman. Just, please: Try to avoid looking like one.

Perhaps you don’t even know who Anita Bryant is: She was a beauty queen who scored a few top 10 hits as a singer, including “Paper Roses” in 1960. But all anybody remembers about her now is her strident and self-righteous opposition to gay rights, and to anti-discrimination laws of all kinds.

So we know your best friend is a gay man (ex-Grey’s Anatomy castmate T.R. Knight) and you began the adoption process of a South Korean baby back in September 2009. Case closed — you’re no Anita Bryant.

But swallow the hard pill that our very own beauty editrix Marta Topran has dealt you with reference to your look June 9 at the Killers premiere:

I really am speechless at this odd, odd choice. »

Okay, this is eerie. We've been joking about how the upcoming Smurfs movie has become a magnet for gay stars and gay faves, what with Neil Patrick Harris, Alan Cumming, Sofia Vergara, and Hank Azaria lending their talents, and now comes word that Tim Gunn has joined the cast, playing a cosmetic company honcho. I still have no desire to see it, but it's a nice addition. Ticked Off Trannies With Knives has had a rough go of it from GLAAD since it was scheduled to play at the Tribeca Film Festival, »

Chatting With Dustin Lance Black at the GLAAD Awards

22 April 2010 1:14 PM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Talking to Dustin Lance Black can give you chills. The Milk screenwriter and Oscar winner has a calm, confident compassion about him that almost overshadows his eloquent replies to such intense subjects as the Mormon church and the battle for same-sex marriage.

In the midst of the throng of interviews taking place on the red carpet at Saturday’s 21st annual GLAAD Media Awards, the out writer and activist stopped to talk with AfterElton.com about his advice for Promgate’s Constance McMillen and why the GLAAD Media Awards are so important.

AfterElton.com: Why do you think the GLAAD Media Awards are important?

Dustin Lance Black: I think it’s one of the things that if there’s going to be a watchdog group for the gay and lesbian community — which means they’ll get on people’s backs when they say the wrong things — it’s always »

The 2010 Gay TV Pilot Round-Up!

4 February 2010 9:20 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Ever wonder how TV shows are born? Well, when a Mommy TV show and a Daddy TV show love each other very much, they start to kiss and rub their bodies together, and then they...

Wait, scratch that. Wrong explanation.

The truth is, all year long, broadcast and cable networks hear pitches from writers and producers, which they then commission into actual scripts. Every winter and spring, they order some of these scripts to "pilot," which means the show is cast and a "pilot" episode is shot.

This does not mean that the show is necessarily ever going to make it on air. Pilots are ordered precisely so the networks can decide whether they want to invest in them. From the pilot, they can see how the show looks, whether or not it "works," and whether casting changes are necessary. Case in point, last year Fox passed on Ron Moore »

Oscar-nominated Colin Firth made a considerably more eloquent statement on the problem of the closet for gay actors that the one he made in December. And he's right &#8212 he shouldn't get honored for being brave and playing gay. HBO to Develop a Biopic About Anti-Gay Activist Anita Bryant

2 February 2010 11:25 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

HBO and Sex and the City creator Darren Star are working on a biopic about anti-gay rights activist Anita Bryant.  Fans of Gus Van Sant’s Milk will remember Bryant as the Florida Citrus Commission spokeswoman, from archive footage, pushing for a California initiative that called for the firing of all homosexual school teachers.  Before this, however, Bryant was a Miss America runner up, a Christian pop star, and a bestselling author.  Later in life, Bryant lost her Florida citrus endorsement, declined in book and record sales, and had to file for bankruptcy.

The project is being written by Chad Hodge (CW’s Runaway), who wants the picture to focus on “what drove her to do the things that she did.” Hodge hopes to speak with Bryant to capture her perspective.  There’s no indication at this point which, if any, political stance the film will take.  More info after the jump. »

Anita BryantSex and the City creator Darren Star is set to direct a biopic for HBO about former beauty queen, singer and celebrity pitchwoman Anita Bryant, known mostly for her work as an anti-gay activist.

By age 18, Bryant, who was born to a religious Oklahoma family in 1940, had won Arthur Godfrey's talent show and a Miss Oklahoma pageant and finished as second runner-up for Miss America.

In 1959 and '60, she was a major pop star with three million-selling records. After marrying and settling in Florida, she reverted to Christian music and, projecting a wholesome image, began plugging such blue-chip companies as Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods and Holiday Inn. »
