The long-rumored sequel to 1987’s “Dirty Dancing” has a director and a release date, Lionsgate announced on Monday.
Filmmaker Jonathan Levine will direct “Dirty Dancing,” which he co-wrote with Elizabeth Chomko. The film, which Lionsgate teased during CinemaCon this year, brings Jennifer Grey back to the franchise as Frances “Baby” Houseman, her character from the original blockbuster.
Speaking to Deadline, Levine suggested that Grey may not be the only actor from the first film to reprise their role in his sequel. “We are about to talk to people and are exploring that,” he said.
“The most important thing for us was having Jennifer on board. She is an invaluable collaborator. We’re going to try to involve as many people from the original as is appropriate. We want to be respectful in every way,” he added.
According to Levine, the new film will also reference Swayze’s character, Johnny. “This...

Nobody should make a Dirty Dancing reboot…
But if you're going to, do it right.
Before you read any further, know that I really did try to give ABC's musical adaptation a chance, I did. There have been plenty of remakes of classical hits over the past few years -- some which were not so great, but others, like Grease: Live, that were wonderfully done and satisfied almost all of the viewers who tuned in. Of course, whenever you hear the news that one of your favorite movies of All Time is going to be remade, there's that moment of excitement -- "Yes! I am pumped for this!" -- followed by fear -- "Wait, what if this goes terribly wrong?"

So after hearing who would take on the beloved roles of Patrick Swayze's Johnny Castle (newcomer Colt Prattes) and Jennifer Grey's Baby Houseman (Little Miss Sunshine herself, Abigail Breslin), I told...

In a dash of corporate synergy, ABC’s Modern Family co-star Sarah Hyland has been cast as Lisa Houseman opposite Abigail Breslin’s Baby in Dirty Dancing, the network's three-hour remake of the hit Patrick Swayze-Jennifer Grey movie. Last year, I noticed an ad for Apple. I mean, you can’t not notice them, since they air every few minutes. This one was special, though, quoting someone quoting Walt Whitman. I wondered if it was made by the same agency that made the Patti Smith Levi’s commercial. And I wondered why the unseen narrator sounded so familiar.
It was Robin Williams, from The Dead Poets Society.
As I’m sure you know, Robin Williams died Monday. God, I’m going to miss him
Now is the time when I would like to tell you what good friends we were, but that would be a lie. Instead, I have only loved him since the first times I saw him do his stand-up on television shows. I was lucky enough to see him perform, twice.
The first time, back when John and I were publishing Comedy Magazine (and why...

Nostalgia alert! "Dirty Dancing" turned 25 on Tuesday, prompting many to scratch their heads and mutter something about time flying while reminiscing about the timeless love story. And though Patrick Swayze passed away almost three years ago, his performance -- and that of a young Jennifer Grey -- lives on, both on screen and in the minds of the movie's many fans.
Grey and Swayze weren't the only stars of the show. Devotees will remember Jane Brucker's turn as Lisa Houseman, the ever-confident singer/dancer and older sister of Grey's character Baby. Brucker went on to star in a few other projects, appearing on the small screen in "Wiseguy" and "Ellen" and in theaters in the film "Stealing Home." Eventually, however, she decided to go into semi-retirement and focus on raising her two daughters. She still occasionally acts.

Admit it: You've seen "Dirty Dancing" more times than you'd care to admit. You're drawn in by its blend of music, dance, nostalgia, and romance between macho-yet-tender Johnny (Patrick Swayze) and awkward-yet-brave Baby (Jennifer Grey) every time it's on TV. Which is often: it seems to have been running on endless loop since its release 25 years ago, on August 21, 1987. Still, as much as you love "Dirty Dancing," you may not realize how often the production skirted disaster, from almost not being made at all, to almost not casting Swayze, to almost cutting a key subplot to please a squeamish potential corporate sponsor, to its catastrophic test screenings that almost led the film's backers to let the film go unreleased and write it off as a bad investment. How did all that trauma lead to moviegoers having the time of their lives? Read on. 1. Writer/producer Eleanor Bergstein based the story on her own childhood.
