Bet’s ‘The New Edition Story’ Miniseries Ends on Ratings High Note

31 January 2017 2:00 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

After raking in an impressive premiere audience for first edition of Bet’s New Edition miniseries, it was a foregone conclusion that “The New Edition Story” would perform well.

Nielsen’s Live+3 ratings, tacking on three days of viewing, are in for the first two parts (with preliminary L+3 numbers for the finale), and that conclusion holds. The premiere drew 3.3 million viewers in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, and 5.5 million total viewers on Bet alone. Part Two’s haul was a just slightly lower 3.1 million in the demo, and 5.3 million total viewers. Part three matched the first night, with 3.3 million in the demo and 5.6 million overall.

All told, the mini brought in 28.4 million viewers to Bet, through the initial run and subsequent encores over the week of premiere; 15.7 million of those viewers came via Bet.

The miniseries charted the course of Ur-boy band New Edition from their humble Boston beginnings to global megastardom, detailing »

Bobbi Kristina Brown's Legacy 2 Years Later: Checking in With Those Who Were Closest to Whitney Houston & Bobby Brown's Daughter

31 January 2017 5:00 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

The sad case of what happened to Bobbi Kristina Brown remains a cold reminder of how fragile life is. The only daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown was found unresponsive in a bathtub in her Atlanta townhouse on Jan. 31, 2015, having slipped under the water for reasons seemingly related to the mixture of alcohol, marijuana, morphine and other drugs found in her system. She never regained consciousness and died on July 26, 2015, a little less than three and a half years after Houston accidentally drowned in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, having suffered heart disease linked to cocaine use. While six weeks is more the norm, Bobbi Kristina's cause of »

8 New Edition Spinoff Acts, From Bell Biv Devoe to New Kids on the Block (Photos)

26 January 2017 6:02 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Bet’s “The New Edition” story traces the dramatic rise of Boston’s New Edition. But the group’s legacy goes way beyond its string of hits. Bobby Brown went solo after being ejected from the group in 1985, though he would later reunite with his bandmates. He did fine on his own, knocking out hits like “My Prerogative” and “Every Little Step.” After Brown’s exit, Michael Bivins recruited solo artist Johnny Gill to join the group in 1987. Gill was the only member of New Edition who wasn’t from Boston. When Ralph Tresvant went solo, he ushered in an »

Bet Welcomes ‘The New Edition Story,’ More Original Content in Its ‘Year of Yes’

24 January 2017 9:03 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

“We are bringing the most original content ever to Bet Networks with ‘Being Mary Jane,’ ‘Madiba,’ ‘The Quad,’ and ‘The New Edition Story,” president Debra Lee announced to a packed screening of the latter at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood Monday night.

Dubbed the network’s “Year of Yes,” Lee went on to describe the network’s focus on “shouting ‘yes’ to black, ‘yes’ to our stories and ‘yes’ to New Edition.”

For Lee, a biopic on R&B group New Edition proved to be the perfect fit for the network and its viewing audience. The group rose to fame in 1983 shortly after Bob Johnson birthed the channel in 1980, and inherently set in motion its following of the boy band at its originally music-based Black Entertainment Television.

President of programming Stephen Hill echoed those same sentiments on the carpet, adding that Bet has carefully crafted its original content brand to be deep-rooted in family and community.

‘The New Edition Story’ Review: ‘Cool It Now’ and Watch Bet’s Addictive Boy Band Biopic

24 January 2017 8:52 AM, PST | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

[Editor’s Note: “Girl, I must warn you…” this review will make liberal use of New Edition, Bobby Brown, and Bell Biv Devoe song titles and lyrics. Why? That’s “My Prerogative.”]

It may seem like a stretch to compare Bet’s “The New Edition Story” to the critically acclaimed biopic “Straight Outta Compton.” After all, N.W.A.’s gangsta rap courted controversy while New Edition’s lyrics only got salty when they accused “Mr. Telephone Man” of a faulty connection. Nevertheless, just as N.W.A. shaped hip-hop, the miniseries gives rightful context to how influential New Edition was on its own. Styled as a New Edition of the Jackson 5, the group perfected the model for all the boy bands to come, including New Kids on the Block, Boyz II Men, ’N Sync, and the Backstreet Boys. They also successfully transitioned from the bubble gum style of their early songs to becoming pioneers of New Jack Swing.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Review: In Which Aziz Ansari Compares President Trump To Chris Brown

Last Week’S Review: Felicity Jones Hosts Uneven Hour That Robs Us Of Hope

Well, this episode was a mixed bag. Whether in the form of sketches, standup or Weekend Update, it tackled race in the most direct (and consistent) way we’ve seen since the Dave Chappelle episode. It also made some deeply problematic comments on the weekend’s demonstrations. Parts were legitimately funny. Parts were troubling. In a word, it was uncomfortable. It was also surprisingly musical, for an episode not hosted by Lin-Manuel Miranda. So, what worked, and what could have used some work prior to air? Let’s take a look.

Host: Aziz Ansari

Aziz Ansari — the show’s first South Asian host in its history — brought his brand of shouty, verbose standup to the 8H stage. Throughout the night, Ansari entertained with a mix of political insight and weird voices, trading his signature pop culture references for cultural commentary, »

Bobby Brown Denies Recent Rumors of Health Problems: ‘I’m Fine, Handsome and Healthy’

9 January 2017 11:55 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Despite recent rumors of ill health, Bobby Brown was in high spirits when he appeared at the Boston premiere of the Bet miniseries The New Edition Story on Sunday. In fact, he was far more concerned about the snow grounding his flight back to the decidedly sunnier California.

“I really want to get back to Los Angeles,” he told People. “My kid has to go to school tomorrow, so I’ve got to get a plane.” The 47-year-old former boy bander recently became a father for the seventh time when wife Alicia Etheredge-Brown gave birth to daughter Hendrix Estelle Sheba in July. »

The handsome actor was on hand to host the Spirit Awards Brunch alongside Issa Rae and was accompanied by his wife of nearly 10 years, Ryan Michelle Bathe. The actual Spirit Awards ceremony doesn't go down until Feb. 25, but Saturday's brunch celebrated the past 12 months of independent film. Following his hosting duties, Sterling and Ryan made their way to the BAFTA Tea Party, where they joined a handful of other stars, including Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield, and Millie Bobby Brown.
