‘A noble quest, to reclaim a homeland, and slay a dragon’ – this plot synopsis, helpfully uttered by elven king Thranduil in the second instalment in the Hobbit trilogy, suggests there’s a straightforward A-to-b quality to this fantasy sequel.

Peter Jackson’s film is certainly a marked improvement on its predecessor. Rather than relying on a lengthy prefix and interminable exposition and singing in The Shire, The Desolation of Smaug gets going straight away. Purists will still have quibbles about changes or additions to the text but few could deny how thrilling the film is, whether it’s seeing Beorn evocatively realised, shuddering through a genuinely creepy sequence involving the spiders of Mirkwood, or bouncing along in a seemingly Donkey Kong-inspired Barrels Out Of Bond scene.

The action is splendidly developed, the design (as with all of Jackson’s Middle Earth epics) sumptuous and the principal cast excel themselves, with »

The guys over at Wired have a behind the scenes look at the thrilling barrel chase in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug. Although the sequence was just seven minutes long, there was an estimated 91 hours of film recorded, be it CGI or live action....

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

If you don’t give and get spring baskets of goodies every year, maybe it’s time to start a new tradition, because Warner Bros. has announced that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be released as a 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + DVD + UltraViolet Combo Pack on April 8, and nothing says “Happy Spring!” like dwarves and dragons.

Producer Clare Eden and writer/director Dan Freeman are the brains behind the wonderful The Minister Of Chance audio series, an unofficial spin-off from Doctor Who that's built a real fanbase. A few months ago, the pair began fundraising for a film version of The Minister Of Chance, and today, they're presented a micropilot of it. We invited Clare to say a few words about it...

We are delighted to have finally completed a micropilot for the award-winning podcast series The Minister Of Chance.
