This article contains spoilers for all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the show titled after her are both cultural icons. Buffy is one of those series that most sci-fi, fantasy, and horror fans have some kind of awareness of even if they have never watched an episode. It kick-started the careers of Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg, and David Boreanaz as Angel.
The series was also stuffed to the brim with memorable moments, from the hilarious (Buffy trying to mime staking a vampire in “Hush”), to the kick-ass (Buffy taking out the Judge with a rocket launcher in “Innocence”), to the gut-wrenching (Buffy finding Joyce in “The Body”). But there is one moment that stands out above all the others and embodies what the show is about.

One of my favorite "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" characters is Anya Jenkins (Emma Caulfield), the Vengeance Demon turned human. She's introduced as the villain of the season 3 episode "The Wish," in which Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) wishes for a world where Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) never came to Sunnydale. When Anya makes Cordelia's wish come true, vampires end up ruling the town in the Slayer's absence.
Restoring the proper timeline robbed Anya of her powers; she's stuck as just another teenager attending Sunnydale High (and flunking math). Initially resentful of her new life, she eventually falls for Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and by season 4, she's part of the Scooby gang, sharing duties with her boyfriend as the show's comic relief.
Anya is hilarious; much of the humor in "Buffy" is sardonic, but she's oblivious. Having spent centuries as a vengeance demon, modern socialization skills escape her. Anya can be just as cutting or rude as the others,...

It's hard to imagine anyone besides Alyson Hannigan as the unforgettable sidekick-turned-superpowered Willow Rosenberg in the hit series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," but the casting directors almost went in a completely different direction. Indeed, the role nearly went to another accomplished television actor — Melanie Lynskey, the Emmy-nominated star of the acclaimed Showtime series "Yellowjackets."
The New Zealand actor kicked off her career with a leading role in Peter Jackson's 1994 film "Heavenly Creatures" opposite "Titanic" star Kate Winslet. She had also appeared in Jackson's 1996 horror-comedy "The Frighteners" -- which, like "Heavenly Creatures," was filmed in New Zealand — when she got the opportunity to audition for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
"It was kind of a visa issue, but not really," she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. "I also was not sure about doing television at that time. It was very early in my career. I had a very old-school agent who was like,...

Legendary country star Dolly Parton was an uncredited executive producer on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, as the show came from her production company Sandollar Productions, which she co-founded with her former manager, Sandy Gallin. So if there’s anyone who should have an idea of what’s going on with the Buffy reboot that was announced some years back, it’s Dolly – and she said it’s still in the works.
Five and a half years have gone by since it was announced that a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in development with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. It was said that the new show would be “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original”. Out of all the members of the Scooby Gang in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (as the show's core team of heroes are adorably nicknamed), it's Xander Harris who's easily undergone the biggest reassessment since the series ended in 2003. It's no surprise either, considering Xander was the closest thing the show had to an avatar for creator Joss Whedon. At least Xander had the excuse of being a teenager for much of the series; it didn't justify his selfish behavior or the way he constantly cracked wise rather than talk through his insecurities and feelings, but there was always the hope he would grow and mature as he got older. Whedon, on the other hand, was one of those guys who got bullied when he was younger, only to become a bully himself as he gained more power and influence.

The show may have been called "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," but the chosen one (Sarah Michelle Gellar) fought all different types of monsters, not just the fangy, blood-sucky kind. For series creator Joss Whedon, this was to ensure his premise had enough to sustain itself in the transition from a movie to an ongoing TV series:
"Though ['Buffy'] had been a fun idea for a movie, I wasn't really sure if there was a whole series there, just about this girl going and killing vampires. So, I started to think about it and I came up with the notion of playing all sorts of horror movies in high school and making them really metaphors for how frightening and horrible high school is."
Whedon said as much in a 1998 interview (when "Buffy" had started its third season). In bringing these vampires to life onscreen, Whedon said there were two, contradictory rules: they had to look both demonic,...

A lot of things made "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" special, from its inversion of the helpless blonde trope to its genre-defying jumps between raucous comedy, heartfelt drama, and supernatural horror. But perhaps the most lasting impact that the series had on culture was the way that it manipulated language. Problematic series creator Joss Whedon created his own particular parlance with "Buffy," and obviously the slayer herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, speaks it like a pro. However, it might surprise fans to learn that when Gellar first auditioned for the series' lead, she was thoroughly confused by the patois that came to be known as Buffyism.
"Well, Buffyism is basically just an odd way of speaking," Whedon said in a 1998 interview. "People often quote the sort of things that people say but we don't have a lot of phrases we like to use. Basically, it's not about creating a word that all...

After the much-derided "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie debuted in 1992, creator Joss Whedon almost gave up on his original vision. The writer had conceived of "Buffy" as a way to subvert expectations by having the typically helpless blonde become the hero of her own story. Unfortunately, Whedon was beyond disappointed by the film, talking on record about how the project was taken away from him and turned into a campy comedy. In recent years, there's been renewed interest in the "Buffy" movie, which certainly differs in tone from the TV show that came to define the character in popular culture. But the movie did at least give us the first draft of Buffy Summers
After that first iteration hit theaters, Gail Berman of Sandollar Productions thought the subversive vampire slayer might make for a good TV show, and contacted Whedon thinking he'd be uninterested in revisiting "Buffy." But to her surprise,...

In “Subspace Rhapsody,” the penultimate episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” second season, a mishap involving a recording of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” and a “subspace fold” causes what the franchise’s technobabble labels an “improbability field:” a glitch in reality that forces the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise to behave like they’re in a musical, bursting into song at inopportune times. Immediately after the big stage-setting ensemble number, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) holds a meeting to figure out what happened, and security officer La’an (Christina Chong) rolls her eyes and asks “What’s next? More improbability, or will we suddenly just poof into bunnies?”
The joke, in the context of the episode, feels slightly random and out of step with the show’s typical sense of humor. But for anyone who has ever watched “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” the reference to bunnies instantly...

Alyson Hannigan was brilliant in the role of Willow Rosenberg on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, which ran for a total of seven seasons and 144 episodes, beginning in 1997 and wrapping up in 2003… But she didn’t join the show until the pilot was reshot, replacing the previously cast Riff Regan as Willow. And during an interview with Shut Up Evan, Melanie Lynskey confirmed that she was also a potential Willow.
Interviewer Evan Ross Katz had been told by Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar that the show’s creator Joss Whedon had envisioned Lynskey (only known from Heavenly Creatures at the time) as Willow when he was writing the pilot script, but Lynskey, who is from New Zealand, couldn’t audition because there was an issue with her visa. Katz asked Lynskey about that and she replied, “It is basically true. It was kind of a visa issue, but...

Setting a TV series in high school puts a ticking clock on your characters. Even if you start them as new students, they're going to age out in a few years. Then you have to figure out how to keep them together. Whether it's every character going to the same local college (which is very unlikely) or making some sort of pact to stick together, education be damned, you've written yourself into a corner before you start. Still, it's hard to resist a high school story. It's a time of tremendous change when brains are still developing and consequences don't have the same fear attached to them that they will later in life. So, how do you manage it?
Joss Whedon tried with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and as someone who was watching the show live at the time, the solutions seemed to work for the most part. Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar...

That ’70s Show has been a popular favorite since it debuted in 1998. While the sitcom aired, another teen-focused drama ran alongside it — Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While the series didn’t have a lot in common, both were very popular with the target audience. And they even featured a few of the same actors.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" isn't a show for the faint of heart. Throughout its seven seasons, the characters go through some of the most horrific experiences imaginable -- coping with grief, loss, loneliness, and every existential problem under the sun. Despite its supernatural settings, the series wonderfully grounds these experiences in a recognizable reality.
The Sarah Michelle Gellar-starring series is a high school coming-of-age tale and a supernatural drama. Buffy (Gellar) and the rest of the Scooby Gang spend most episodes fighting off some non-human threat to their town while dealing with typical high school problems -- homework, school dances, dating, and the like.
This same parity applies to the tragedies of "Buffy." Yes, the death of a loved one at the hands of supernatural forces is sad, but so is your boyfriend breaking up with you before prom. As Buffy once told Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg) just before her most heroic act,...

We are living in an age of TV show revivals. By the end of this month, Night Court will even be back on the air. But don’t get your hopes up for a revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that would bring Sarah Michelle Gellar back in the title role. While speaking with SFX Magazine (via Movieweb), Gellar said she wouldn’t want to play Buffy ever again.
When asked if she’s interested in reprising the role, Gellar answered, “I’m not. I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power.

"I wear the cheese. It does not wear me." Most fans of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" will remember these words. Not because they're important, but rather because the Cheese Man (David Wells) has invited debate for decades. Creator Joss Whedon was once known for his careful planning, with many of the major decisions of "Buffy" famously being plotted years in advance. There are clues seeded in one season for major events that wouldn't take place until the next one or even later, so when it comes to dream sequences like the ones featured throughout the season 4 finale "Restless," fans could endlessly dissect every syllable.
After delivering the incredible one-two punch of "Becoming" and "Graduation Day" in seasons 2 and 3, respectively, "Restless" was an odd choice to wrap up the show's fourth season. There was no epic battle, no Big Bad to defeat, and no stakes of any kind really. That was all over and done with.

What is the best television series of all time? Some argue the merits of how "The Wire" exposed the hypocrisy of the Baltimore drug war in Baltimore; others point to the villainous evolution of Walter White in "Breaking Bad." Choose to debate this topic endlessly, and there will still only be one, true answer: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," for all its faults and unsavory associations, is the best TV series ever made. Running seven seasons (and five more in comic book form), "Buffy" had it all: vampires, slayers, spells, werewolves, a hellmouth, high school trials and tribulations, college jocks that were secretly androids, evil Mayors, and Giles!
"Buffy" also boasted one of the best casts in all of network television, featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, David Boreanaz, Charisma Carpenter, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Marsters, Anthony Head -- and last but not least, Nicholas Brendon. In the age of "Friends," there...

In what fans then thought was the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series finale, Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her sister Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg) stood above an ethereal portal readying to kickstart the apocalypse. Before sacrificing herself to save the world (again), Buffy tells her sister, "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it." However, the Scooby Gang resurrected Buffy at the start of season 6 -- allowing the show to run for two more seasons. But Buffy's message still applies: Life isn't easy, but we can't give up fighting for change.
Even as Buffy battles vamps and demons, she's our guide through life's challenges. "Buffy" transitioned seamlessly from tackling high school problems to adult-sized issues over its seven seasons. Everyone has a little Buffy Summers in them: She represents invisible strength, ingenuity, and perseverance. Final girls have always been a source of hope and inspiration for audiences, but...

Before television was populated with supernatural teen dramas like "Riverdale" and "The Vampire Diaries," and long before "Twilight" took the world by storm, fledgling network The WB took a risk on a bold new series called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." The premise was born out of creator Joss Whedon's idea to flip the perspective on the defenseless blonde cheerleader archetype that typically dies in horror movies by turning her into a hero.
While Whedon is no longer regarded as the feminist hero he once was, the show still has a lot of merit for its originality as both a supernatural horror series and a serious teen drama that deftly handled feminist issues and empowered young women. "Buffy" was a gripping and surprising show to tune into each week. At turns hilarious and terrifying, it's worth revisiting 25 years later. Bad news for fans of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” as the reboot halts production.
Executive producer for the planned series, Gail Berman, told The Hollywood Reporter‘s Top 5 Podcast, that the project has been put “on pause”.

Nicholas Brendon, who starred in all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was hospitalized after a cardiac incident.
His sister revealed the news on Instagram.
“Nicky is doing fine now but he had to be rushed to emergency about two weeks ago because of a cardiac incident (tachycardia/arrhythmia),” she captioned a series of photos of the actor.
“Some of you might remember he had a similar incident after his second spinal surgery last year (for Cauda Equina) but this time."
"He is trying to get a little more rest and has been concentrating on medical appointments.”
This is the latest medical scare for the 51-year-old.
Last year, Brendon underwent surgery after suffering "paralysis in his genitals."
At the time, his manager alleged that it was caused by having to sleep in a concrete floored jail cell after being arrested for prescription fraud.
In October, Brendon's manager revealed to DailyMail.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was set at a California high school beset by vampires, demons and toxic mean girls, but it turns out its real-life big bad was the show’s creator, Joss Whedon.
Then in his early 30s, Whedon — who built “Buffy” into one of the most beloved and influential shows of the past 25 years and went on to write and direct 2012’s “The Avengers,” which launched the biggest movie franchise of all time — was heralded for his witty dialogue and wrenching plot twists. But he also scarred his cast of young actors with biting, inappropriate comments that stayed with them for decades.
Interviews that Variety conducted with 11 individuals who worked directly on “Buffy” or “Angel,” or were closely familiar with the productions during their runs on The WB and Upn, painted a portrait of Whedon as a talented, collaborative writer-producer with a pattern of inappropriate, imperious and disparaging...

After her efforts to flip her home state blue for the 2020 presidential election paid off last week, former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams turned her attention to flipping a different group: “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fans who think that Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy Summers belonged with Angel (David Boreanaz), not Spike (James Marsters). And it looks like she at least got the votes of the “Buffy” cast and creator Joss Whedon himself.
“To be fair, Angel was the right boyfriend for Buffy coming into her power. Spike was the right man to be with as she became the power,” Abrams tweeted Monday, after being labeled a Spike shipper by one Twitter user.
That hot take didn’t go over well with everyone on Twitter, but it did get heavily endorse by Whedon and co. over the last few days.
“I Agree! (during squee),” the “Buffy” creator tweeted.
“I’ll vote yes to that!

Cut back to the late 1990s, and Nicholas Brendon was on top of the world. As one of the core trio on the hugely popular (and much missed) Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Brendon had teenage fandom, money a-plenty, and, it seemed, a one-way ticket to the big time. So, what happened? Judging from the fact he’s making the news more for his arrests than his acting these days, nothing good. Brendon first tried to crack into acting in his early twenties but quit when he got sick of the politics in Hollywood. From there, he returned to school to study

Buffy is here save us from the pandemic — or at least from boredom.
On Thursday, Sarah Michelle Gellar treated “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fans to the ultimate throwback look when she dressed up in her costume from the Season 1 finale of the hit WB series and snapped a pic for Instagram.
“All dressed up and no where to go. “I say we party” #safeathome #prophecygirl,” Gellar captioned the photo of her in the white gown Buffy Summers wore, not to her high school dance, but to her big fight with The Master in the episode titled “Prophecy Girl.” That battle ended in her first death — yes *spoiler alert* Buffy died multiple times — after which she was quickly revived by Xander (Nicholas Brendon) and Angel (David Boreanaz).

It’s been 20 years since Angel was on television and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff garnered a very loyal cult following. Since it has been two decades, it’s about time that we revisit the lovelorn vampire, right? David Boreanaz thinks so too.
The actor appeared on The Talk Tuesday and when asked about the show he teased that one of TV’s favorite vampires will be returning.
“We’re coming up on 20 years. I mean, that’s amazing to have been blessed with a show like that and that’s where I really started my gig — this acting world,” said Boreanaz.
“I love that character,” Boreanaz added. “So, I will say there may be something coming up. I don’t want to give away much. I can say, it’s 20 years coming up this fall and we may have something in the works.”

This past weekend, on March 10th, marked 22 years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer first aired on The WB. 22 years! I can’t believe it’s been that long.
Buffy is one of my favorite shows of all time, and I’ve recently been watching it again with my daughters who have been loving it! It’s so funny to watch them react the ‘90s era of the show.
To celebrate and mark the occasion, Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanaz, Nicholas Brendon, and Charisma Carpenter all chimed in on social media.

The scoobies are back! Well, most of them are. The cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a mini-reunion at Wizard World Portland on Sunday and it brought back fond memories of their days at Sunnydale High School and the Hellmouth.
The titular slayer was not on hand unfortunately, but her fellow supernatural-hunting friends were. Her Bff Willow, Alyson Hannigan was on hand as well as her partner Amber Benson, who played her girlfriend Tara. James Marsters, who played the vampire we love to hate Spike was also on hand as well as Charisma Carpenter who played the resident diva Cordelia as well as Nicholas Brendon who portrayed Xander. Also in attendance were actors Julie Benz, Iyari Limon, Amy Acker, James Leary, Clare Kramer, and Alexis Denisof.
Many took to Instagram to post pics of the reunion. Carpenter posted a group pic with the caption, “Demons and vampires and scoobies oh my!

The several cast members of the classic shows Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel reunited over the weekend at Wizard World Portland to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Angel.
The only two main actors that didn’t attend were Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, which is a shame. But it is cool to see everyone else come together again!
In the reunion photo below you’ll see Amber Benson (Tara), Julie Benz (Darla), Iyari Limon (Kennedy), Amy Acker (Fred), James Leary (Clem), James Marsters (Spike), Clare Kramer (Glory), Alexis Denisof (Wesley), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), Alyson Hannigan (Willow), and Nicholas Brendon (Xander) all together again. The photo came with the caption:
“Witches, demons, vampires, watchers, slayer, Gods, and Scoobies oh my!”
There are also additional photos and video footage for you to check out as well. As a fan of these shows, it would have been awesome to be in attendance at this event.

There may be another “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” televison show in the works but new showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen doesn’t see it as a replacement for the original series.
Owusu-Breen tweeted Thursday that “there is only one Buffy.”
“For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, and struggle and slay. There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, GIles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel… They can’t be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated. I wouldn’t try to,” she wrote.
Instead, she wants to focus on a new cast of characters, including a new slayer, for today’s complicated time.
The reboot of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” comes from original series creator Whedon, who is set to executive produce the new version of the story. Owusu-Breen will pen the pilot script.

The hellmouth is opening again. 20th Century Fox has confirmed that a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot is being developed. Original creator Joss Whedon is working with Monica Owusu-Breen (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) on a brand new story.
This “Buffy” won’t be a continuation of the original series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, but will feature a brand-new Buffy, who will be African-American. There’s no network attached as of yet.
Besides Whedon, original executive producers Gail Berman, Fran Kazui and Kaz Kazui are also behind the revival (and Berman’s The Jackal Group partner Joe Earley is also attached). Fox 21 TV Studios is expected to pitch the new show to cable and streaming outlets this summer.

In the series of the same name, Cooper portrayed “Jack Bourdain,” an executive chef of an upscale restaurant called Nolita. The short-lived series ran for just one season on Fox during the 2005-06 TV season, averaging around 4 million viewers, according to Nielsen. Although 13 episodes were made, Fox only aired four of them.
The series premiered shortly after Cooper’s role in the 2005 comedy “Wedding Crashers.”
It also featured Nicholas Brendon, John Francis Daly, Jamie King, Bonnie Somerville, Owain Yeoman, John Cho and Frank Langella.
