EuropaCorp acquires 'The Circle'

Sources confirmed the North American deal on Tuesday that is understood to have closed for a little under $10m.

Im Global handles international sales on the upcoming thriller starring Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega, Patton Oswalt and Ellar Coltrane.

James Ponsoldt will direct The Circle from the book by Dave Eggers about a young woman who struggles to maintain her own identity as she is encouraged to become the public face of her tech giant employers. The script is well regarded and a number of buyers had been tracking the project.

Image Nation Abu Dhabi fully finances and Image Nation presents the film in association with Parkes MacDonald Productions.

Playtone ProductionsGary Goetzman and Tom Hanks and Anthony Bregman of Likely Story produce with Ponsoldt. EuropaCorp’s Christophe Lambert will executive produce with Steven Shareshian, Evan Hayes, Stefanie Azpiazu, Ron Schmidt and Sally Willcox.

EuropaCorp brokered the deal with UTA Independent Film Group and CAA. »

Keira Knightley Joins Will Smith in ‘Collateral Beauty’

Keira Knightley has joined the cast of New Line’s ensemble drama “Collateral Beauty” starring Will Smith.

David Frankel will direct the film, which is being co-financed by Village Roadshow. Smith is starring alongside Helen Mirren, Edward Norton, Naomie Harris and Michael Pena.

Producers are Anthony Bregman, Bard Dorros, Allan Loeb, Michael Sugar and PalmStar CEO Kevin Frakes. Smith will portray a successful New York advertising executive who experiences a personal tragedy and retreats from life entirely, prompting his colleagues to devise a drastic plan to help him recover.

The movie will hit theaters on Dec. 16, 2016, putting it in prime position for an awards season run. Production will start this month in New York.

Knightley was most recently seen in “Everest.” She is repped by CAA, United Agents and Mgmt Entertainment.

EuropaCorp Buys Domestic Rights to ‘The Circle’ With Emma Watson, Tom Hanks (Exclusive)

EuropaCorp has acquired the domestic distribution rights to “The Circle,” an upcoming thriller featuring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson, Variety has learned.

A theatrical release date is still being weighed. James Ponsoldt (“The Spectacular Now”) directed the film and wrote the screenplay. John Boyega, who recently headlined “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” rounds out a cast that includes comic Patton Oswalt and “Boyhood” star Ellar Coltrane.

The story centers on a young woman (Watson) who joins a social media company. After getting pressured by the company’s founder (Hanks) to step in front of the camera, she attracts a vast group of followers and finds her identity threatened by her brush with the spotlight. Dave Eggers (“A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius”) wrote the book that inspired the movie.

Hanks next appears in Clint Eastwood’s “Sully,” a biopic about Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, a pilot who landed a troubled aircraft on the Hudson River, »

Disney’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” has some new competition on Dec. 16 — Will Smith’s drama “Collateral Beauty.”

Warner Bros. announced Monday that it has moved “Chicken Soup for the Soul” out of the Dec. 16 slot into 2017 and replaced it with New Line’s “Collateral Beauty.” The “Star Wars” spinoff is the only other title scheduled for release that day.

David Frankel is the director of “Collateral Beauty,” which is being co-financed by Village Roadshow. Smith is starring along with Helen Mirren, Edward Norton, Naomie Harris and Michael Pena.

Meanwhile a rapturous reception for Nate Parker’s slave revolt drama The Birth Of A Nation following its world premiere on Monday put it high up on the target list of buyers.

Spc announced its second worldwide deal on a Sundance film, acquiring Meera Menon’s female-driven Wall Street drama Equity.

Sundance: Logan Lerman’s ‘Indignation’ Bought by Lionsgate

Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment has bought North American rights to coming-of-age drama “Indignation,” starring Logan Lerman, following its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

The studio paid $2.5 million for “Indignation,” which marks the directorial debut of former Focus Features co-founder and CEO James Schamus.

The film is based on the Phillip Roth novel about a brilliant young Jewish man who escapes his sheltered family life in New Jersey and his job in his father’s butcher shop to attend a small conservative Ohio college in 1951 on a scholarship — exempting him from being drafted into the Korean War. He becomes infatuated with his beautiful classmate (played by Sarah Gadon) and clashes with the college’s dean, portrayed by Tracy Letts.

Linda Emond, Danny Burstein and Ben Rosenfield also star. Producers are Anthony Bregman, Schamus and Rodrigo Teixeira.

CAA arranged the financing and brokered the deal. FilmNation is selling foreign rights. »
