Owen Wilson interview: Wonder, art in movies

Ben Mortimer Nov 30, 2017

Owen Wilson chats to us about Wonder, art, writing and more...

Wonder. It started life as an extraordinary book from R J Palacio, and it's now been turned into a hugely impressive film as well. Already a hit in the Us, the movie stars Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson. And on the UK press tour for the movie, Wilson spared us some time to talk about the film...

[As I enter, I notice that Wilson is reading a book about Van Gogh. I make a comment about this just as I’m setting my Dictaphone to record]

Yeah, I just picked it up off the nightstand. But I’ve been there, to the museum in Amsterdam. Do you have a favourite Van Gogh painting?

Very trippy.

Have you been to any of the galleries in London while you’ve been here?

I went to go see the Basquiat show, over at the Barbican.

There was a good documentary on Basquiat recently.

My friend, [art dealer] Tony Shafrazi,

Film Review: ‘Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back’

Film Review: ‘Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back’
The man behind the Guggenheim Museum’s solid-gold toilet, Maurizio Cattelan has been described as a prankster, a fraud, an imitator, an innovator, a genius, a xylophone, and “quite possibly the most infuriating smart-ass on the contemporary art scene.” Actually, I have no idea whether any of that previous sentence is true, but it sounds plausible, which is good enough for director Maura Axelrod. A hard-hitting news reporter who took a break from covering international danger zones (like Rio favelas and Afghan front lines) to make the softball art doc “Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back,” Axelrod plays along with her eccentric subject’s insouciant attitude vis à vis his own identity to mostly delightful effect.

Like so many recent films about contemporary artists, the movie functions more as publicity than portrait, reminding viewers within its first two minutes that Cattelan’s work sells at auction for $10 million — as if that

Audi Celebrates Emmy Week:

Amidst sultry monochromatic white décor and pops of neon-colored light from custom Led towers — crafted by event designer Tony Schubert — a spirited group of nominated TV talent and Hollywood partygoers kicked off awards weekend at Audi’s sixth annual pre-Emmy party at Cecconi’s on Thursday night.

Veep’s” Tony Hale had some idea why his co-star and recurring best actress winner, Julia Louis-Dreyfus — who was also mingling about the patio — gets such acclaim. “Not only is she a good comic actress, but you have to know how to carry the authority of the Vice President. Rob Pruitt Looks Back at His Career, From Cocaine Buffet to Glittery Pandas

  • Vulture
On May 10, collector Peter Brant hosted hundreds of art-world revelers at his Greenwich estate — he set up a big tent out on the polo field for them, gave them lots to drink, and fed them lots of lamb — to celebrate the opening of a show of work by artist Rob Pruitt. Brant hosts this field trip twice a year for this teeming mass of dealers, artists, collectors, journalists, critics, fashion types, and scenesters — oh, and a smattering of celebrities, too. (His dealer, Gavin Brown, is also known to be a tad mischievous: On Sunday, he hired party buses equipped with stripper poles, loaded them up with Prosecco, and unleashed two full loads of gloriously weird downtown art kids upon the tony countryside gala.) The show also included one of Pruitt's "flea markets," with the proceeds benefiting Bard College. This time the flea market was just full of

5 Flash Booth Reviews From Art Basel Miami
Between Leonardo DiCaprio slapping a cool near-million on a Frank Stella and Ivanka Trump sauntering down the aisles with Wendi Murdoch, people are buying art. The initial first-day sales reports are brimming with major coups for contemporary heavyweights, such as Anish Kapoor, Richard Prince, Mickalene Thomas, and others. And while even our Jerry Saltz “loves that art fairs can make money for artists and galleries,” the money talk can be a limited conversation, especially reserved for those power collectors who were out in full force yesterday, like Don and Mera Rubell, Peter Brant, Beth Rudin DeWoody, and Jill and Peter Kraus. From our stroll through the Convention Center — it’s hard to not get lost in that thing — we bring to you the highlights from Wednesday.Lehmann Maupin Teresita Fernández is having an excellent year.
