Tribeca Film Review: ‘Don’t Look Down’

30 April 2016 2:57 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Sir Richard Branson’s out-sized hankering for adventure is matched only by his talent for self-promotion. “Don’t Look Down” focuses on Branson as balloonist, using previously unseen footage of his daredevil hot air flights together with archival footage and interviews with the major players, and while the achievements have an undeniable thrill, the documentary needs trimming. Director Daniel Gordon, best known for his superb North Korean trilogy, seems to be a helmer for hire here, delivering a solid, and solidly engaging film that nevertheless feels like an extended promo for the Branson brand. TV and streaming sites will be the likely takers.

Who would deny the romance of a hot air balloon? Their majestic beauty is an understandable lure, so combined with the challenge of breaking world records (not to mention the nice big expanse of canvas crying out for the Virgin logo), they seem custom designed to tickle Branson’s fancy. »

YouTube CEO Discusses Upbringing, Humor, Insecurities In New Interview With Her Mother

12 April 2016 2:52 PM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

A new one-on-one interview with her mother, Esther, provides some fascinating insight into the upbringing and current leadership philosophy of YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki.

Wojcicki interviewed her mother as part of a new Huffington Post web series called Talk To Me, in which bold-faced business minds like Richard Branson, Melinda Gates, and Travis Kalanick participate in intimate conversations with their parents (and children) that also touch on important social issues. While the Huffington Post previously announced that episodes would premiere on Facebook, Wojcicki's episode launched -- naturally -- on YouTube.

During the 7-minute conversation with her mother, Wojcicki notes that both she and her younger sister, Anne (of biotech startup 23andMe), serve as CEOs of major technology companies, which leads her to wonder: “What did you feed us for breakfast, mom?”

Here's another way to rank the Oscar acting nominees

14 January 2016 2:55 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Which actors will take home the gold at this year's Oscars? While it's a nice thought that the winners in each category will ascend the steps of the Dolby Theatre based on merit alone, we all know that's not how it works in this silly town. Judging the quality of a specific performance relative to other performances is a highly subjective thing, and certainly subject to pre-existing biases. With that in mind, is it any less ridiculous to predict the winners in each category based on age, height, net worth and relationship status? I say it's not! Let's have some fun. Below, my rankings and predicted winners in each category based on totally irrelevant personal stats. (Note: All "net worth" numbers are based on 100% accurate Google search results.) Best Actress 5. Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn Height: 5'6" Age: 21 Net worth: $2.5 million Relationship status: Single? 4. Tribeca Enterprises Taps Andrew Essex as CEO

In a seismic shift for Tribeca Enterprises, the company has selected veteran advertising exec Andrew Essex as its CEO, replacing co-founder Jane Rosenthal in the post.

Rosenthal, who is now serving as executive chair, launched The Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 with Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York City. She’s been the only CEO of the company, which began as festival organizer to help the recovery of lower Manhattan and promote New York as a filmmaking center.

Essex, the former vice chair and founding CEO of ad agency Droga5, will oversee Tribeca’s businesses, which include the film festival along with digital and distribution operations.

Essex will be responsible for overseeing partnerships, marketing, content and digital strategy, business development, as well as all day-to-day operations. Rosenthal will continue to work on the strategic growth of the company, such as the recently launched Tribeca Games. »
