Played bass in the orchestra accompanying Fred Waring and His Pennsylvanians on NBC radio in the 1940s and 1950s (and later the Waring TV program) as "Lumpy" Brannum. Originated stories about "Little Orley," a farm kid, for the Waring radio show and recorded under the name Uncle Lumpy.
Actor Thomas L. Brannum was his only child (with his first wife before he married Joan, a CBS staff member whom he met while working on the Capt. Kangaroo TV show).
