Amazon Studios has decided to close up shop on “The Last Tycoon,” pulling the plug on the expensive hour-long drama based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s final, unfinished novel. The show, which took place in 1930s Hollywood, starred Matt Bomer as film producer Monroe Stahr and Kelsey Grammer as his boss, Pat Brady, as the two battled for control of their studio. “The Last Tycoon” also featured Lily Collins, Dominique McElligott and Enzo Cilenti. It’s the second drama canceled by the streaming giant in three days, as Amazon pulled the plug on Cristina Ricci’s Zelda Fitzgerald (F. Scott’s wife) series “Z,...

Old Hollywood comes to life in The Last Tycoon, inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald's unfinished last novel, but surely influenced by the machinations of present-day Hollywood. Fitzgerald's novel, prepared by Edmund Wilson, was published posthumously in 1941, soon after the troubled writer's death. It follows the travails of film producer Monroe Stahr, who was reportedly modeled after the legendary Irving Thalberg, and his conflicts with Pat Brady, a rival producer who was supposedly based on MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer. Thalberg became legendary during the years he spent at MGM, from 1925 until his early death at the age of 37 in 1936. As head of production, he was credited with guiding the studio to an exalted status, releasing financially successful films that also...

It was kismet for Jennifer Beals when The Last Tycoon came along.
The 53-year-old actress, best known for her roles in Flashdance and The L Word, plays the fierce and in-demand Hollywood star Margo Taft, who comes into the fray in the original Amazon series' third episode and proves a strong woman isn't to be toyed with.
As Margo, Beals showcases a woman -- who keeps her biracial identity a secret -- unafraid to demand what she's worth and even forces directors to show their private parts before she begins filming their movie.
Beals recently jumped on the phone with Et to discuss her exciting new role on the 1930s-set The Last Tycoon, which also stars Matt Bomer, Kelsey Grammer and Lily Collins, and offers an update on the long-awaited Showtime revival of The L Word.

The era of prestige television dramas has ushered in a mentality that a high-stakes period piece, in order to be an artistic success, must have a raw intensity to justify a full series’ existence. Ostensibly, “The Last Tycoon” offers the perfect opportunity for just that, a cutthroat look at life in Old Hollywood as a nation reels from the effects of the Great Depression and hurtles toward World War II.
Instead, the latest interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s unfinished 1941 novel is more akin to the high melodrama that characterized many of the most popular dramas of that era. The result is a glossy look at the time period that, despite leaning on some familiar emotional and story territory, still makes for an engaging, enjoyable viewing experience.

Based on his performance in the July 28-launching The Last Tycoon on Amazon, Kelsey Grammer might want to consider making room for at least one more Emmy nomination in his life. I say that because having watched the nine-episode adaptation of F. There are quite a few puzzling aspects to The Last Tycoon, but the biggest head-scratcher of all is: If your studio executive looks like Matt Bomer, why not just put him in all your movies?
Bomer’s matinee-idol looks are certainly put to good use in Amazon’s retro Hollywood drama (debuting Friday, July 28) — he looks damn good in a tailored suit and fedora — but like a lot of The Last Tycoon, the substance falls far short of the image. Plagued by corny dialogue and clumsy plotting, this ambitious series aims for the stars but plays more like a first-weekend flop.

“The picture is the baby,” is the driving mantra of Monroe Stahr (Matt Bomer), the titular character in Amazon’s latest serial drama The Last Tycoon, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s unfinished novel of the same name. The show follows the ups and downs of Stahr as he tries to protect that baby, sometimes at the cost of his own soul. A successful young producer in the late 1930s who runs the lot of Brady-American Pictures with an iron fist wrapped in a silk glove, Stahr has to navigate the demands of starlets, rival producers, and his pool of screenwriters while dealing with his acerbic boss Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer), his friend and occasional antagonist.

Amazon is looking to bring back old Hollywood and a classic tale by F. Scott Fitzgerald in this first trailer for The Last Tycoon. Before you jump into the trailer, here's a description:
The Last Tycoon tells the story of Monroe Stahr, a dashing and talented studio executive who struggles to find his place within the movie industry and the world. Monroe is caught in a power struggle with his boss and mentor, Pat Brady, when a young Irish waitress catches his eye. Her spark just might be the fuel he needs to create a truly great and important film in his quest for power.
Headlined by Matt Bomer, Lily Collins, and Kelsey Grammar, this series looks like it will do a service to the story Fitzgerald had to tell about Hollywood in a pre-wwii era. Check out the first trailer below, and let us know what you think. The Last Tycoon premieres July 28th.

“The Last Tycoon”
In the year 2016, it’s no secret that as glamorous as old Hollywood seemed on the surface, the truth was far less wholesome. With that in mind, “The Last Tycoon,” written and directed by Billy Ray (the under-appreciated talent behind such films as “Shattered Glass,” adapting a famously unfinished roman a clef by F. Scott Fitzgerald) might seem a bit rote, but it’s got an awful lot going for it.
Matt Bomer stars as Monroe Stahr, the idealistic production head of a motion picture studio who’s at odds with studio boss Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer) while trying to get his dream picture made in the political and social climate of the 1930s. (Why yes, the subject of what’s happening in Germany does come up.) Monroe, we learn right away, is mourning the loss of his movie star wife even as he bounds around the studio,...

Oh, Dragon Con, how I adore you! Let me count the ways…
They include:
1. The fact that even the airline losing my luggage until 3 a.m. on arrival Thursday feels like something I can roll with, since, after all, the minute I walk in I find old friends (and new) to greet me and take my mind off of things – and to commiserate, and hope with me that all of my toiletries and hand-made costume items are not lost forever in the bowels of Reagan National. Thankfully they weren’t. 2. The costumes, oh the costumes. Including my own! Amazon Studios is in negotiations for a TV series take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s final unfinished novel "The Last Tycoon" at Sony Pictures TV.
Billy Ray ("Shattered Glass," "Captain Phillips") penned the script which Amazon is close to buying as part of a potential pilot order. The project was originally set up at HBO a year ago, but didn't come to fruition there and the script was released by the pay cable network to be shopped around elsewhere.
The story follows Hollywood's studio executive Monroe Stahr in the 1930s as he climbs to the height of power, pitting him against his mentor and current head of the studio Pat Brady.
Stahr and Brady were based on real life moguls Irving Thalberg and Louis B. Mayer respectively. The series will deal with the violence, sex and towering ambition that engulfed Hollywood during this period.

Captain Phillips writer Billy Ray is set to write and direct The Last Tycoon, an HBO drama series project based on F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s final unfinished novel. Party Of Five co-creator Chris Keyser is attached as showrunner to the project, which hails from Sony Pictures TV and I hear garnered interest from five networks, landing at HBO with penalty. Inspired by the life of film mogul Irving Thalberg, on whom protagonist Monroe Stahr was based, The Last Tycoon centers on Stahr, Hollywood’s first wunderkind studio executive in the 1930′s as he climbs to the height of power pitting him against his mentor and current head of the studio Pat Brady, a character based on Louis B. Mayer. With Stahr as a focal point, the series delves into the true violence, sex and towering ambition of Hollywood in the 30′s. Ray and Keyser executive produce with Perri Kipperman, Josh Maurer,...

Captain Phillips screenwriter Billy Ray is heading back to the small screen. The scribe is teaming with HBO to develop F. Scott Fitzgerald's unfinished novel The Last Tycoon, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The drama, from Sony Pictures Television, is described as a new take on the Roman a clef inspired by the real life of film producer Irving Thalberg. The story follows Monroe Stahr (based on Thalberg) and his rise to power in old Hollywood and his conflicts with Pat Brady (based on studio topper Louis B. Mayer). Ray will pen the script, executive produce and, should it

Looks like Illinois is seriously considering giving gay marriage a go. Obama wants it. Jesse Tyler Ferguson's there selling it. And hell, Illinois is so chock full of gay greatness, it deserves the honor of becoming the 10th state to approve gay marriage. Even the state's Gop chair Pat Brady backs it. Holler!

The 2nd annual PollyGrind assaults Las Vegas during an epic length film festival that runs Oct. 8-17 at Theatre 7 with enough sleaze and violence to make Sin City residents feel right at home.
Actually, the fest does open up on the 7th with a concert at Neon Venus with local acts like Monster Zero, Creepersin and many more.
However, the film portion of the fest opens on the 8th with Stuart Simpson‘s acclaimed Australian gorefest El Monstro Del Mar!, one of the best Russ Meyer/Roger Corman mash-ups with a Down Under twist. Read the Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film review of this gem here.
Other Bad Lit favorites in the lineup are Drew Bolduc and Dan Nelson‘s The Taint, which is still completely grossing out audiences on the festival circuit, and The Uh-Oh Show, the splatter-filled horror comedy by the Godfather of Gore himself Herschell Gordon Lewis.

What happens when you take classic video game property Pac-Man and add a few dashes of Saw? Directors Patrick Brady and Allyson Schettino wondered the same thing and actually slapped the following together, poking fun at some of the more ridiculous video game adaptation ideas of recent years. Good stuff! Synopsis: Pharmaceutical CEO Michael Pacman is forced to take his own dangerous medications in order to survive a maze designed by a sadistic patient out for revenge. Thanks to the...

No, it's not an April Fool's joke, though don't let the production value of this trailer fool you: this is most definitely a parody. It's not the first Pac-Man movie trailer to arrive online (remember this one?), but it's definitely one of the better made trailers - complete with quick swooshing cuts and a Saw-inspired story that kinda makes you interested in what happens next. I'm pretty positive we'll never see a real Pac-Man movie (or at least not one that's live action), so these parodies are nothing more than some harmless fun to help pass the time. If I were to fault directors Patrick Brady and Allyson Schettino in any way, I'd say that their ghosts weren't freaky enough. Should've upped the ghost factor; thrown in a gruesome ghost killing and upped the weird level to about an 11. Right now it's an 8. Overall, though, good job.
