Review: Hellraiser - The Scarlet Box (Blu-ray)

1 November 2015 8:16 AM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

When discussing iconic horror film series of the modern age, the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday The 13th, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Scream always come up, and rightly so, but whereas they are often spoken of with wry, knowing smiles, when it comes to Hellraiser, and Pinhead, brows often become furrowed and conversations become serious, such is the reverence for Clive Barker’s most famous creation.

Those of us who were captivated by Hellraiser when it first graced cinema screens way back in 1987 have never quite forgotten the power and intelligence of that first film, and were equally enrapt by the sequel Hellbound the following year, and to a lesser extent by 1992’s third offering Hell On Earth. For us, the Hellraiser series pretty much concludes, as the subsequent sequels were dismal, so it is a joy to see that Arrow Video have chosen to »

Blu-ray Review: 'Hellraiser: Scarlet Box'

29 October 2015 5:21 AM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★★★★ Clive Barker's S&M Gothic fantasia has been poorly served (tainted even) by a string of Dtv sequels. The Liverpool-born horror visionary's Cenobites and Lament Configuration are without a shadow of a doubt among the most compelling creations in all of literature and genre cinema. The Pope of Pain - that's Pinhead (played by Doug Bradley) - is as iconic as Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and Leatherface, but he operates very differently. He's a far classier figure, in fact.

Blu-ray Review – Hellraiser – The Scarlet Box Limited Edition Trilogy

Hellraiser – The Scarlet Box Limited Edition Trilogy

Directed by Clive Barker/Tony Randel/Anthony Hickox.

Starring Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Doug Bradley , Ashley Laurence, Nicholas Vince, Simon Bamford, Barbie Wilde, Sean Chapman, Kenneth Cranham, Oliver Parker, Terry Farrell, Kevin Bernhardt, Oliver Smith, Grace Kirby, Paula Marshall, Ken Carpenter, Imogen Boorman, William Hope.

The first three films in the Hellraiser series are given a new lease of life in an expansive Blu-ray box set, courtesy of Arrow Video.

To say that this release has been highly anticipated in the horror community since it was first announced several months ago would be something of an understatement; in fact, it would be a total lie as once it was announced that Clive Barker’s classic Hellraiser and its two immediate sequels were getting a 2K restoration then October 26th 2015 became judgement day for anybody with an appreciation for Barker’s masterpiece and the mythology it spawned, »

Review: "Hellraiser: The Scarlet Box Limited Edition Trilogy 1987-1992", UK Blu-ray Release From Arrow Films

21 October 2015 7:55 AM, PDT | | See recent CinemaRetro news »

By Darren Allison

Hellraiser: The Scarlet Box Limited Edition Trilogy 1987-1992 Directed by Clive Barker, Tony Randel, Anthony Hickox, Starring Doug Bradley, Andy Robinson, Ashley Laurence, Claire Higgins, Kenneth Cranham, Terry Farrell, Kevin Bernhardt. Arrow Blu-ray 4 Disc, Released on 26th October 2015.

Stephen King was once quoted as saying: “I have seen the future of horror… his name is Clive Barker.” The future became a reality when, in 1987, Barker unleashed his directorial debut Hellraiser, launching a hit franchise and creating an instant horror icon in the formidable figure of Pinhead.

Arrow’s beautifully produced Hellraiser: The Scarlet Box, has arguably for the first time, been afforded the prestige it fully deserves. The collection works very nicely in deed, mainly because its focus revolves around creator Clive Barker’s involvement in the franchise. Whilst Barker had a small interest in the fourth instalment Hellraiser IV: Bloodline, it would be the »

120 Essential Horror Scenes Part 3: Mutilations

6 October 2015 8:59 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

It’s what most horror films are known for: the gore that splatters on the screen. But when done right, the flying viscera becomes more than just gallons of red stuff, it becomes a chilling reminder of the fragility of the human body and of the ingenuity of filmmakers in making our most twisted fears and fantasies into a stomach churning reality. Grab your barf bag!

Antichrist (2009)- His and her pain

As far as horror sub-genres go, torture porn is up there with found footage as the most understandably reviled by audiences. With Antichrist, Lars Von Trier attempted to write a film that dealt with his personal demons. Confessing that he had been suffering from depression while writing the screenplay, Trier ended up bringing torture porn to its logical conclusion by taking the title of the sub-genre all too literally and creating a macabre near-masterpiece out of trashy genre origins. »

With Christopher Young’s fairy tale score, ‘Hellraiser’ withstands its otherwise dated qualities

2 October 2015 11:04 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Musically speaking, Hellraiser begins like a fairytale. Glassy bell percussion provide an enchanted introduction before composer Christopher Young’s main titles layer in tragic string figures. Blaring low brass blast a tainted pessimism, harkening back like the prelude to some age old fable as piano moves in grand, darkened fashion. Like a spell cast over the audience, the opening passages of Hellraiser are hugely operatic, large enough to swallow the listener whole. It’s a romantic and unconventional way of beginning a late-80s horror movie. The music distresses and reassures us at the same time, a soaring embrace of the good and the very, very bad.

This twisted yin and yang is Clive Barker’s film in a nutshell. In 1987, Barker got behind the camera to adapt his 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart, where ghoulish leather-clad demons called Cenobites (led by Doug Bradley’s iconic Pinhead) tear apart the flesh »

Didn’t get enough red-hot reviewin’ action in my last mega-column, creeps? Well e’en if ya did—too bad! Here comes another crapload of monsters, madmen and my patented high-larious wiseass ass-wisery!

Clive Barker’S Origins: Salome/The Forbidden

•             Release Date: Available Now on DVD

•             Written By: Clive Barker

•             Directed By: Clive Barker

•             Starring:  Doug Bradley, Clive Barker, Peter Atkins, Anne Taylor, Graham Bickley

Here are a couple of flicks that I have a real history with! Way back in the distant past, a gaggle of my ghoulish gang would huddle around the ol’ cathode ray tube and blast our eyeballs with all manner of vicious visuals that were contained in these magical black rectangles called VHS tapes. Now, a lot of what some of you fiends take for granted these days (Italian gore, splatter flicks, etc.) could be damn hard to get unless you dipped yer toes in some pretty grey waters. »

Hellraiser review [Frightfest 2015]: “A black gem of British horror”

29 August 2015 10:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Hellraiser review: Clive Barker’s masterpiece screens at this year’s FrightFest. Hellraiser review

Director: Clive Barker

Cast: Sean Chapman, Clare Higgins, Andrew Robinson, Ashley Laurence, Doug Bradley, Nicholas Vince, Simon Bamford, Grace Kirby, Oliver Smith

Certificate: 18

Running Time: 94 minutes

Synopsis: After solving a puzzle box, Frank is trapped in a hell-dimension full of pleasure and pain. When he escapes, it’s only a matter of time before the demons want him back.

It may have been released in 1987, but Hellraiser is no less shocking today. It’s a genuinely warped, twisted and innovative piece of cinema which will disturb audiences at this year’s Frightfest with a newly restored edition.

Based on Clive Barker’s novella, The Hellbound Heart (and directed by Barker too), Hellraiser follows two brothers, Frank (Sean Chapman/Oliver Smith) and Larry (Andrew Robinson). Larry’s the good (or is that boring?) family man, with second wife, »

The good, the bad. My first trip to Montreal Comiccon was a smashing success

5 July 2015 6:16 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Cosplay costume: Jacket from ‘Hotline Miami‘

The 7th annual Montreal Comiccon, was held at the Palais des Congrès this past weekend and for the first time in seven years, I was able to attend the event. Past Cons were held in early September, conflicting with my coverage of the Toronto International Film Festival, but this year, the organizers decided to change the date allowing me to geek out to a variety of attractions catering to fans of comics, sci-fi, horror, anime, games, television and film. I’m pleased to announce that I was pleasantly surprised with the event as a whole. Montreal’s geek extravaganza is extremely laid back. There was little time spent waiting in line and everyone seems to be having a good time. I counted over two dozen booths filled with comic book artists ready to draw up an original piece on the spot, sign an autograph »

Where the Monsters Live: How the Director’s Cut of Nightbreed Revitalized Clive Barker’s Cult Classic (Part One)

16 February 2015 12:28 PM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Today, Clive Barker’s wildly imaginative Nightbreed celebrates its 25th anniversary. While that is a remarkable feat in itself, the journey that the film has taken over the years has become the project’s enduring legacy within the horror genre. The recent Director’s Cut release of Nightbreed has been the ultimate vindication for Barker, who saw his vision snapped away decades ago from producers who believed they understood the world of Midian- and all its monsters- better than their creator.

Of course, that wasn’t the case, as Nightbreed received a disastrous response when it arrived in theaters, maligned mostly for its lack of subtlety and nuanced storytelling that was found within the pages of Barker’s original novella, Cabal. When Barker decided to move forward on adapting his work for the big screen, he was quick to rely on his some of his very closest friends to bring »
