TNT's Steven Spielberg-executive produced Falling Skies: Season 1 is not about an alien invasion despite what its name or alien-heavy marketing materials may imply. That doesn't mean it isn't good Sci-Fi laced entertainment; it most certainly is, as long as expectations for massive alien battles are kept in check.
Falling Skies had an apocalyptic invasion as conveyed via the simplistic drawings of a child in the premiere episode's opening moments. That horrific event is firmly planted six months in the past. The sky has already fallen, and in its wake the last remnants of humanity cling to strands of hope and fight to survive the alien threat and each other.

Starhawk on Playstation 3 feeds gamers off multiplayer battlefield strategy and exhilaration while the methodical single player campaign begs for attention like a neglected pet. One glance at the pause menu during the campaign reveals an online mecca of options, stats and modes that demand playing nice with others.
In other words, the greatest rewards aren't showered upon the recluse.
No need to worry about the bevy of multiplayer options until after the brief yet surprisingly useful campaign is wrapped up and strategic skills are honed. Sony and developer LightBox interactive promised an unparalleled multiplayer console gaming experience with Starhawk, and they delivered a rainstorm of weapons, vehicles, and fortifications at the ready.
Though Starhawk is technically a new IP for Sony, it shares enough in common with one of Playstation 3's first games that also came from LightBox interactive and put multiplayer gaming at the forefront back in 2007, Warhawk, to be considered a "spiritual successor. »

If you think Glen Basner’s Filmnation Ent. had a stellar year last year, 2012 is the cherry on the sundae with John Hillcoat and Jeff Nichols in the Main Comp line-up. But even better: 2013 might be an entire bowl of cherries on the sundae with such items as Terrence Malick’s latest, Pedro Almodóvar’s los amantes pasajeros, Sean Penn’s The Comedian and Anton Corbijn’s A Most Wanted Man all looking good for a Cannes birth. Next up, we should be looking out for a fall delivery for Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin (see pic).

With the summer movie season underway after the opening of "The Avengers" last weekend, there's one movie that's taking a stealthier approach: "The Bourne Legacy," the fourth film in the blockbuster Robert Ludlum spy franchise, and the first without star Matt Damon in the lead role. Bringing in writer-director Tony Gilroy, who penned all three films to date before he went on to find his own success as a helmer with the Oscar-nominated "Michael Clayton," the film sees Jeremy Renner star as Aaron Cross, an operative from a CIA program more advanced than Operation Treadstone, with new cast members Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac and Stacy Keach joining the returning Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Albert Finney.
The film debuted an impressive teaser trailer a few months back, but with an August 3rd release date still a ways off, Gilroy and the studio have been keeping their cards close »

Alien invasion films are a dime a dozen so it takes a special premise or characters to make one stand out from the pack. Summit Entertainment's The Darkest Hour is saddled with the lamest of premises, and its characters are only worth about a quarter note each.
Alien invaders show up at earth on one fateful night and simultaneously attack all the major cities around the globe. It's implied they are after minerals, but before the mining can begin, they'll need to evaporate as many humans as possible to minimize any resistance.
And, in what could be an under-the-table deal with budget controller, the aliens are invisible behind a cloaking shield. How convenient.
The initial attack sees thousands of the aliens appear in the night sky, first as glowing balls of light and then completely invisible to the eye after they touch down. One of them takes out a »

Breaking Dawn 2 teaser poster The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2's teaser poster is the blue version of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1's teaser poster. It's easy to see why Summit Entertainment (now part of Lionsgate) opted to have the red version for Breaking Dawn 1 and the blue one for Breaking Dawn 2. Had it been the other way around, people might think they were looking at the teaser poster for Dan Bradley / Chris Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's Red Dawn, which also opens next November — but that features nasty North Korean soldiers instead of nasty European vampires. Those with a good eye will notice another difference in the Breaking Dawn 2 poster: But it's in Italian! Is that because of the Volturi? No, silly. For starters, the poster is in Spanish. And no, it's not in honor of some ancient Mexican or Chilean vampire. It's merely a marketing-savvy approach to »

Charlize Theron, Snow White and the Huntsman Chris Hemsworth announces that a new Snow White and the Huntsman trailer is coming out soon — Monday. He then offers a "sneak peek" (please scroll down) at what we're about to see. And what we're about to see looks and sounds quite impressive. [Watch earlier Snow White and the Huntsman trailer.] Elsewhere on this site, we've posted previews for Tarsem Singh's Mirror Mirror and Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Both are also "fairy-tales" set in a fantasy world resembling Europe during the Middle Ages. Judging by the trailers, as far as I'm concerned Snow White and the Huntsman (aka Swath) is the most esthetically appealing of the three. It's also the most intriguing; in other words, the one I'd most like to check out at a movie theater. The tone is dark — perfectly appropriate for a fantasy tale set in the Dark Ages. The score is both thrilling and evocative. »

BBC's The Fades is an unusual hybrid of supernatural creepiness and the natural pitfalls of being a teenager. Like MTV's Teen Wolf, on paper it shouldn't work, yet creator Jack Thorne of Skins fame has brought over some of the cast from that hit series and put together six episodes of a supernatural brew more than worth your attention.
At the core of The Fades is Paul (Iain De Caestecker), fitting the angst-ridden outcast male teenager, who lives with his mom and socially connected twin sister, and spends much of his time with his equally outcast and nerdy pal Mac (Daniel Kaluuya) whose geek-inspired pop culture references pleasingly know no bounds. These two are like Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in Paul; social outcasts that are practically joined at the hip. This Paul is the perfect stereotype to throw some supernatural weirdness at, and that's exactly what happens.
Paul begins to have apocalyptic nightmares and, »

The Lorax movie, based on the 1971 Dr. Seuss book, flashed orange and a myriad of other bright colors at the box office on Friday, but came away seeing nothing but green.
In its first 24 hours of release, Universal's The Lorax starring the voices of Taylor Swift, Danny DeVito and Zac Efron, scored $17.4 million in North American ticket sales, outpacing tracking that had suggested it would open around the $16 million mark. That same tracking placed The Lorax opening weekend numbers at around $50 to $55 million. With Saturday and Sunday matinees added to the already big Friday opening, The Lorax could finish its first weekend in theaters north of $60 million.
The $17.4 million The Lorax opening is behind Illumination Entertainment's previous big animated film Despicable Me which opened with a $21.3 million first day in theaters. However, Despicable Me wrapped its opening weekend with $56.4 million, a number The Lorax should easily top.
The other newcomer on Friday, »

Chris Hemsworth, Fran Kranz, Anna Hutchison, The Cabin in the Woods Thor's Chris Hemsworth, along with the equally curious (and probably doomed) Fran Kranz (Much Ado About Nothing, Lust for Love) and Anna Hutchison (Blinder, Notting Hill) look for Something inside the basement of a cabin in — one assumes — the woods. It remains to be seen whether they'll find that Something or that Something will find them. I'm hoping for the latter, so Hemsworth will have that college/high-school-dude jacket torn from him. It'll then be revealed he's a man in his late 20s trying to pass for a teen or facsimile. In fact, The Cabin in the Woods is reportedly filled with unexpected twists and turns. Perhaps that'll be one them. The Cabin in the Woods was written by Drew Goddard, who also directs, and Joss Whedon, who directed Hemsworth (and Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr, »

Grand Slam Tennis 2 takes the franchise away from its former casual existence on Nintendo Wii to a more refined and visually realistic presentation on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. In some areas it achieves the transformation flawlessly, while others merely scratch the surface of what they could potentially become.
For this review I played the Playstation 3 version of Grand Slam Tennis 2 which is identical to the Xbox 360 version with the exception of added support for Playstation Move. More on Move support in a bit, but first let's look at another new quasi revolutionary control scheme shared by both versions of the game.
EA chose to offer players more refined controls over their on-screen counterpart's tennis racquet actions with the introduction of Total Racquet Control. It's a take on right analog stick ball control in the FIFA Soccer franchise, only rather than control a player's movements with the ball, you are controlling the racquet. »

At least two retailers are running deals this week to entice early adopters of Sony's new Playstation Vita handheld gaming console to pick up more than a single game at launch.
Over the weekend, GameStop rolled out a "buy two first-party launch games, get the third game free" program. There are only five Sony Computer Entertainment America games available in this deal so you would have to purchase 60 percent of them to take advantage. They include: Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Mod Nation Racers, Little Deviants, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, and WipeOut 2048.
Head over to GameStop.com or check into one of their many retail outlets to take advantage of this Ps Vita deal. The deal ends on Saturday, February 245.
Over at big box retailer Target.com there's a similar deal, though without the restrictions of GameStop. There you can buy two of Any of the Ps Vita launch games and »

Ubisoft has debuted the first entry in a new Ghost Recon Future Soldier behind-the-scenes video series that will highlight the game's prominent features. For this first entry, a handful of screenshots have been passed along as well that you can peruse below.
"Animation and Cover" talks about the newfound focus on detailed character animations and cover tactics in the game. For example, approximately 2,500 animations were used to bring the main character to life, developed from motion capture using former Navy Seal operatives. There's really no better way to capture the movements and feel of being one of these soldiers for the game.
Numerous dynamic moves are available to take advantage of cover behind and around objects. You can slide, roll and jump over scenery to get out of harms way or put yourself in the perfect position for a silent kill.
Moving from cover to cover is especially crucial as »

The River television series will finally test the waters on ABC tonight marking the second straight night a new pilot has premiered with the name Steven Spielberg attached as an executive producer.
In The River, Paranormal Activity mastermind Oren Peli brings his shaky cam brand of horror to the small screen. Early looks bear a striking resemblance to the franchise that put Peli on the map, so it comes at no surprise that what was proven successful on the big screen has made its way to the small one.
Rather than operating within the confines of a home, The River follows a camera crew deep into the Amazon in response to a beacon that belong to Emmet Cole, an explorer who vanished in the area six months prior with his cameraman. The found footage from the camera crew, that also includes Cole's wife, child, and the daughter of the missing cameraman, »

Skylanders Giants, the sequel to the popular Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure released last fall, became official today just ahead of the International Toy Fair where the original game was unveiled almost a year ago.
With Skylanders Giants, Activision and developer Toys For Bob are introducing an all-new adventure for all the existing Skylanders characters and new ones that will launch with the game to embark upon. There will be a total of 8 new Giants characters that are twice the size of a traditional Skylander figure. An additional set of characters will light up when on or near the Portal of Power. It's unknown whether these characters are part of the Giants or something else.
To be clear, your existing Portal of Power and all your Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure figures with their level ups will be compatible with the new game.
The confirmed Giants based on the initial screenshots and trailer are Tree Rex and the Alchemist. »

The Amazing Spider-Man from director Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy was previewed for audiences in select large market cities around the world earlier today. The rest of us not in those cities aren't out of luck, however.
This evening Sony Pictures Home Entertainment took to Twitter and announced that a brand new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man will be released later this evening. As in 3am Est/12pm Pst. Most of us in North America will be fast asleep when the trailer drops, so think of it as a nice waking up present for tomorrow morning. Europe, though, will be able to jump on it shortly after it launches.
The global sneak peek of The Amazing Spider-Man from earlier today ran approximately 10 minutes and was presented in 2D. The trailer launching later tonight was also screened, in 3D to boot. »
