Alain Boublil was born in Tunisia and imigrated to Paris, France at 18. He worked in music publishing before writing lyrics for French pop music. He became enamored with musical theatre and began working with another composer, Claude-Michel Schonberg. He lives in London and is the father of four sons.

He was awarded the 1997 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best New Musical of 1996 for Martin Guerre.
In 1987, won two Tony Awards for "Les Misérables" in collaboration with Claude-Michel Schönberg: as Best Book (Musical), and, also with additional lyricist-collaborator Herbert Kretzmer, as Best Score. In 1991, he was also twice Tony-nominated with collaborator Schö'berg: as Best Book (Musical) and, also with additional lyricist-collaborator 'Richard Maltby, Jr.', for "Miss Saigon."
