Venice Film Review: Vince Vaughn in ‘Brawl in Cell Block 99’

4 September 2017 2:30 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Over the years, I’ve consumed my share of vintage grindhouse flicks (revenge, car chase, blaxploitation, cannibal, you name it), but I confess that I never thought much about them until Quentin Tarantino came along and began to talk them up as if they were the second coming of cinema. Curious, I took a grindhouse-movie plunge to try to find out what it was that turned the scurrilous trash of the ’70s into Quentin’s cinematic sanctuary. I think I finally saw the light. Yes, the movies had sleaze, grit, wild violence, tawdry sex, an off-the-books aura of semi-scandalous transgression (all things I approve of). But what I now also saw is that they had a very perverse sort of conviction. The characters didn’t just commit sordid, reckless, and ugly acts; it’s as if the low budgets and air of extremity scraped away everything but their ability to mean it. You »

Fashion Label Miu Miu Back at Venice With Two New Women’s Tales

25 August 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Fashion and film have long intersected when it comes to glitz and glamour. But the Miu Miu Women’s Tales series of shorts, which is an integral component of the Venice Days section at the Venice Film Festival, gives the Prada Group-owned fashion label a different role in the movie world: it discovers and empowers women directors.

Launched in 2012, Women’s Tales has now spawned 14 works written and directed by women exploring the feminine universe, all fully financed and produced by Prada. They are all loosely inspired by Miu Miu clothes and accessories, but with no obligation for these products to be shown on the screen.

It started like this: “One day I got a call from Miu Miu,” says producer Max Brun. “They said: ‘We’d like to do a short by a woman director because we want to explore women’s creativity through young female directors’ lenses…which embodies the brand’s attention to women »

Chloë Sevigny, Zosia Mamet, & More to Appear at Miu Miu Women’s Tales

14 August 2017 12:01 PM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

“(The [End) of History Illusion]”

Women’s Tales, a project created by fashion brand Miu Miu in conjunction with Venice Days, is returning for its sixth consecutive year. In addition to the premiere of two new short films, this year’s three-day program includes conversations with nine female stars that will address the state and challenges of contemporary media.

Women’s Tales begins with a screening of this year’s additions to the Women’s Tales collection. Golden Globe winner Chloë Sevigny (“Boys Don’t Cry”) — who has been very open about her own Hollywood experiences — turns the camera on comedian Carmen Lynch. According to the program’s press release, Sevigny’s “Carmen” is an “interesting take on the solitude of the performer on tour, city after city after city.”

The second short, choreographer-director Celia Rowlson-Hall’s (“Ma”) “(The [End) of History Illusion]” combines “1930s Hollywood musicals with the 1960s Cold War psychosis to produce a pastel-hued tale of fear and escapism.”

The remainder of the program is dedicated female-led conversations moderated by Penny Martin, editor-in-chief of The Gentlewoman Magazine. In addition to this year’s featured short directors, Friday’s lineup includes Zosia Mamet (“The Kids are Alright,” “Girls”) and Kate Bosworth (“Still Alice”), who just recently produced “Nona,” a film that focuses on Central America’s sex trafficking industry.

On Saturday morning, Laura Harrier (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”), Kiernan Shipka (“Mad Men,” “Feud: Bette and Joan”), and Rowan Blanchard (“Girl Meets World”) will take the stage. Harrier is set to star in HBO’s adaption of “Fahrenheit 451,” and Blanchard is one of many stars featured in Ava DuVernay’s upcoming “A Wrinkle in Time.”

Broadway actress and editor-in-chief of Rookie magazine Tavi Gevinson and Hailey Gates (“Twin Peaks”) will wrap up this year’s Conversations in the afternoon.

This year’s Miu Miu Women’s Tales will take place August 31 — September 2 in Venice.

Chloë Sevigny, Zosia Mamet, & More to Appear at Miu Miu Women’s Tales was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story. »
