NBC Plans The Money Pit Series Based on the Tom Hanks Comedy

NBC is developing a new comedy series based on the 1986 feature The Money Pit, which starred Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. Amblin Television will produce the film. Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment was behind the original, now considered a cult classic.

Universal Television is co-producing, with former The Office writer-producer Justin Spitzer adapting the original screenplay by David Giler into a weekly series.

The plot will stay close to the original, which followed young couple Walter Fielding, Jr. and Anna Crowley Beissart Fielding as they proceed to buy a distress-sale mansion that quickly falls apart and destroys their relationship. Much of the humor in the movie came from the couple's attempts to fix the many problems found inside the mansion.

Justin Spitzer also has a Detroit auto company comedy set up at NBC, and another comedy in the works at USA Network called Start Up. If The Money Pit moves forward, »

Helen Hanft, Favorite of Woody Allen, Dies at 79

Helen Hanft, the comedic actress who became a favorite of such writer-directors as Woody Allen, Paul Mazursky and Tom Eyen, died of intestinal complications on May 30 in New York. She was 79.

Born in the Bronx on April 3, 1934, she attended the High School of Performing Arts and began her theatrical career as a pioneer of experimental theater at such venues as La Mama Etc. and Caffe Cino.

Known for her loudmouth persona, she often played eccentric, flamboyant, raunchy characters in Tom Eyen comedies including “Sarah B. Divine,” “Areatha in the Ice Palace” and “My Next Husband Will Be a Beauty” as well as “Why Hanna’s Skirt Won’t Stay Down,” “Women Behind Bars,“ “The Neon Woman” (in which she co-starred with Divine), and “The White Whore and the Bit Player.” She also had a great personal success in David Rabe’s “In the Boom Boom Room” at Joseph Papp’s Public Theater. »
