15 years ago today: ‘Legally Blonde’ opened in theaters

13 July 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

15 years ago today, Elle Woods taught us to bend and snap. Legally Blonde hit theaters on July 13, 2001, giving Reese Witherspoon her breakout role and giving us a movie that put a pink-loving sorority girl in the place where she’s the outcast: law school. Until she proves all her doubters wrong, that is, in the midst of a murder trial, no less. The comedy’s success led to a 2003 sequel and a stage musical that premiered on Broadway in 2007. Other notable July 13 happenings in pop culture history: • 1923: The Hollywood sign, which then read “Hollywoodland,” was officially dedicated. • 1939: Frank Sinatra made his recording debut in a New York studio, singing “From The Bottom Of My Heart” and “Melancholy Mood” with the Harry James Band. • 1964: The Supremes recorded “Come See About Me” in “Hitsville U.S.A.,” Motown’s first headquarters. • 1984: The Muppets Take Manhattan and The Last Starfighter opened in theaters. »

Producer RedOne Dishes on Recruiting J. Lo and Ryan Seacrest for His Music Video, Working with Michael Jackson and More

6 July 2016 4:25 PM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

RedOne might not be the most recognizable name in music - but he's responsible for some of the biggest Top 40 hits of the century. Born Nadir Khayat in Morocco in 1972, RedOne began producing and songwriting music in 1998. By 2006, he scored Billboard hits like Kat DeLuna's summer jam "Whine Up." But it wasn't until he teamed up with Lady Gaga that he became a go-to hitmaker in Hollywood. RedOne co-wrote and produced most of Gaga's earliest hits, from breakouts "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" to "LoveGame." Now 44 and with three Grammys to his name, RedOne has produced hits for everyone in the industry, »

‘Swiss Army Man’ Directors on How Their Film is the Opposite of ‘The Revenant’

1 July 2016 12:07 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It would not be unfair to call Swiss Army Man “the movie about the farting corpse with the boner,” because that is the perfect description of Manny (Daniel Radcliffe), one of its two lead characters (the other is love-torn Hank played by Paul Dano). What would be unfair is to only call it that, because it’s actually one of the most unexpectedly sensitive films of 2016.

As directed by the Daniels (Kwan and Scheinert) the film combines the best of buddy films, mumblecore aesthetics and unexpected romance to become something that defies genre and what’s politically correct on film. Needless to say so, it’s a delightful surprise and perfect counter-programming for a season so marked by how alike everything looks. Whether you like the film or not, the true thing is that you won’t be able to get it out of your mind for quite some time. »

23 June 2016 8:02 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

What an outrageously abundant year it's been for great TV — and we're only halfway through. 2016 has been a small-screen gold rush so far, from low-key comedies to mega-glitz miniseries, the Battle of the Bastards to the City of the Broads, hilarious fake news to horrifying true history — with dragons and spies and crooks and drunks. When two of the year's best shows are totally different takes on the same 1994 murder trial, you know all bets are off.

So here's a salute to the 10 best TV shows of 2016 so far:

Interview: Dave Franco is Making Magic in ‘Now You See Me 2’

6 June 2016 1:36 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Comedy is what makes Dave Franco tick, and recently he’s taken on some prime funny roles in “Neighbors” and “Unfinished Business.” He also was in the very successful “Now You See Me” in 2013, playing a rogue street magician. The sequel was inevitable, and Franco will reprise his role in “Now You See Me 2.”

The sequel reunites the all-star cast, including Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. Adding to that mix is Daniel “Harry Potter” Radcliffe – portraying a bit of a villain – and Lizzy Caplan, who replaces Isla Fisher from the first film as a female magician. This time the act known as the “Four Horseman” are underground, and it takes a direct challenge to their reputation to get them to emerge again, with China and London among the exotic locations.

7 Reasons We Still Love ‘Moulin Rouge!’ 15 Years Later

1 June 2016 2:01 PM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

A decade-and-a-half to the day has passed since the visionary Baz Luhrmann blessed audiences with “Moulin Rouge!,” the gaudy (in all the right ways) jukebox movie musical. Everyone from David Bowie and Queen to Paul McCartney, Beck, and Bono are counted on the film’s soundtrack, and bring a modern-day spin to the 19th-century-set film. Starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, the 2001 film follows a courtesan in Paris, the poet who falls in love with her, and the musical madness that surrounds them. It is spectacular, spectacular, to say the least. To celebrate its anniversary we selected our favorite moments from the film. Nicole Kidman on a Swing Performing “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”This is the cabaret Moulin Rouge’s star act and Satine’s (Kidman) opening number. On this day in pop culture history: ‘Top Gun’ premiered, ‘Seinfeld’ killed Susan

16 May 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

30 years ago today, Navy fighter pilot hotshots Maverick, Iceman, and Goose first flew across big screens around the world. It was on May 16, 1986 that Top Gun opened in theaters. Already well on his way to becoming a household name thanks to 1983’s Risky Business, Tom Cruise became a certified movie star with the release of Top Gun. It was also the first hit for director Tony Scott, who went on to direct other action flicks and thrillers like Crimson Tide, Man on Fire, and Déjà Vu (which reunited him with Top Gun star Val Kilmer) before his death in 2012. Top Gun, a slick, upbeat, Reagan-era ode to masculinity, boasted a memorable soundtrack (with Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” and Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone”), impressive dogfights, an endlessly quotable though often goofy script, and, upon its release, immediate box office success. It became the highest grossing movie of 1986. Also on this day, »

Grammy for Album of the Year: Why Kendrick Lamar Will win, but The Weeknd Should win

Music's biggest award, the Grammy for Album of the Year, will be handed out on Monday, February 15, but unlike most people, I think it's one of the most unpredictable races of the year. Contrary to Gold Derby's combined predictions, which have "1989" as the strong frontrunner with 4/5 odds, Taylor Swift would have to defy a number of odds to actually win. -Break- Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Predictions The biggest hurdle is that she's a very recent winner, having won three albums ago for "Fearless" in 2009 when she was still considered a country musician. Furthermore, no female artist has ever won this award more than once for her own album. In fact, only four acts have ever repeated as winners for their own work, most recently U2 in 2005 for "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" after winning in 1987 for "The Joshua Tree."
