See New Trailer for Eminem-Produced Battle Rap Film 'Bodied'

2 August 2017 5:23 PM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Emimem is involved in another battle rap-related film, Bodied. However, rather than starring in it as with his semi-autobiographical 2002 blockbuster 8 Mile, he is serving as the upcoming film's producer.

Based on a script penned by rap battle champion Alex "Kid Twist" Larsen, Bodied is directed by music video director Joseph Kahn, who has helmed videos for Eminem, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, U2 and many others. The film will premiere at Toronto International Film Festival in September.

In the trailer, several voiceovers declare "Battle rap is not boxing, it's a street fight, »

U2 and The Joshua Tree at 30: The Gig that Keeps on Giving

20 July 2017 2:31 AM, PDT | The Cultural Post | See recent The Cultural Post news »

This is the tour that would mark an historic occasion. Not only is it the 30th anniversary of U2’s phenomenally successful The Joshua Tree album, but the third time I was to see the band live. Yep, the hat-trick was in sight in London on Sunday, July 9, and as Twickenham Stadium, the home of English rugby, loomed large, it still wasn’t quite sinking in.

To be honest, I’d only decided late on in April to try and purchase tickets for this landmark tour. On the subject of punctuality, my apologies for only just getting around to writing this review – the traditional U2 withdrawal symptoms have only just left me. The Irish rockers’ previous two albums, 2014’s Songs of Innocence and 2009’s No Line on the Horizon, had left me somewhat underwhelmed. That’s not to say that they weren’t both decent efforts, but when you talk »

Which Artist Got Biggest Boost on Pandora From Dr. Dre-Jimmy Iovine Doc ‘Defiant Ones’?

11 July 2017 4:30 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

One of the most remarkable aspects of “The Defiant Ones,” the HBO documentary on the lives and partnership of veteran music producers and Beats by Dre founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, is the wide variety of music that their careers touched. Dre’s reach is impressive enough — N.W.A, Eminem, Gwen Stefani, Mary J. Blige, and more — and Iovine, who essentially stepped back from producing in the late 1980s, worked with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Patti Smith, and U2, among others.

Music from all of those artists is featured in the doc, but the artists who got the biggest boost in engagement at Pandora from the series’ first episode, which focused primarily on Iovine’s early years? Perhaps not surprisingly, it was The Boss, who saw a whopping 141% increase in artist station adds at the internet radio service.

Variety will post the results from episode 2 on Wednesday.

Artist station adds:

Bruce Springsteen: 141%

Tom Petty: »

‘The Defiant Ones’ Director Allen Hughes on Getting Dr. Dre to Open Up for the HBO Docuseries

9 July 2017 8:24 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

From director Allen Hughes, the terrifically fascinating four-part HBO documentary The Defiant Ones is an in-depth exploration of the unlikely partnership between Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. The unbreakable bond of trust and friendship these two men share has shaped many of the most exciting and extreme moments in recent pop culture, and through candid interviews with them, as well as a wide variety of music icons (including Snoop Dogg, Bruce Springsteen, Gwen Stefani, Bono, Eminem, Stevie Nicks, Ice Cube, Patti Smith, Lady Gaga, Tom Petty, Trent Reznor and Diddy), and never before seen footage from a multitude … »

‘The Defiant Ones’ Director Allen Hughes on How He Got Eminem, Bruce Springsteen, and Dr. Dre to Spill Secrets On Camera

9 July 2017 6:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Sometimes, when you’re documenting history, you still have to make your own moments.

“When the camera’s rolling and when I yell cut, I made sure my team knew, ‘Don’t ever cut until the subject is off the set,'” Hughes said.

Some of the most satisfying moments in the new HBO docuseries, “The Defiant Ones” — an expansive, four-part history of the last four decades of popular music, premiering Sunday night on HBO — are candid ones. Interview subjects occasionally tinker away on a keyboard or wander around a living room. Stevie Nicks plunks out a tune on a baby grand. Eminem strolls right onto set and starts dishing. As Hughes described in a recent interview with IndieWire, those moments were part of the plan from the beginning.

“There’s always a veneer,” Hughes said. “People are being guarded about their image. From early on, I said, ‘Start the »

TV Review: HBO’s Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine Documentary ‘The Defiant Ones’

7 July 2017 7:45 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The music documentary — the authorized oral-history-with-archival-footage style essentially invented by VH1’s “Behind the Music” in the 1990s — is currently in an indulgent and expansive era… its progressive-rock phase, if you will. In 2017 alone, music fans have been clobbered by overstuffed documentaries like “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives” (123 minutes), the Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs/Bad Boy Records documentary “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” (a long 80 minutes) and even Lizzie Goodman’s sprawling book about the early 2000s New York City rock scene, “Meet Me in the Bathroom,” which exceeds 500 pages. (We won’t include Jay-z and Beyonce’s real-life, multi-platform reality show, which is playing out in real time.)

All three tackle their respective histories with a combination of refreshing honesty and a sometimes inflated sense of self-importance — yet each must also function as entertainment, and how skillfully they incorporate drama largely determines how successful they are. “Soundtrack »

'The Defiant Ones': Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine's Wild Adventure

In the new HBO documentary The Defiant Ones, about the lives and intertwining careers of producer/record executive Jimmy Iovine and hip-hop legend Dr. Dre, Iovine recalls his first impression of meeting Dre and his then protégé, Snoop Dogg. "I said, 'Wow, these guys remind me of when I first saw the Rolling Stones,'" he says. "They're the same as Mick and Keith. They scare you, but the music brings you in."

Iovine and his Interscope label wound up releasing Dre's 1992 classic The Chronic, the start of »

Eminem Makes Rare Appearance to Fete Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine at ‘Defiant Ones’ Premiere

23 June 2017 5:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The tip sheet was relatively short for the premiere of HBO’s “The Defiant Ones” at Los Angeles’ Paramount Studios on Thursday night (June 22), but befitting a fete honoring Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine — and the four-part documentary about their lives directed by Allen Hughes — it had power. Among the rap and rock royalty in attendance: Kendrick Lamar, Trent Reznor, Puff Daddy, Pharrell Williams, Jared Leto, and, in a rare appearance, Eminem, who avoided the red carpet, and, wearing a cap and sporting ginger-brown hair and beard, took a seat in the Paramount Theatre behind his longtime collaborator Dr. Dre. »

U2 has a lot of love for the city of Manchester, England.

Following news that 22 people were killed after a bomb went off at an Ariana Grande concert on Monday night at Manchester Arena, the band appeared on Tuesday's Jimmy Kimmel Live and commended the citizens of the city while slamming those responsible for the horrific attack.

"They hate music. They hate women. They even hate little girls," U2's frontman, Bono, said of those behind the bombing. "They hate everything we love."

Praising Manchester residents, Bono added, "The worst of humanity was on view in Manchester last night, but so was the best, as people took perfect strangers into their homes. ...Manchester has an undefeatable spirit, I can assure you."

The tragedy undoubtedly resonates with U2. Not only do they perform arena shows frequently, but the group »

Global Screen is doing a roaring trade on Julian Schnabel: A Private Portrait, the documentary about the larger-than-life New York artist and filmmaker that premiered at Tribeca last month.

Midway through the market, eye-catching deals have been closed with Weltkino in Germany and Pretty Pictures in France. Cohen Media Group previously secured North American rights.

Directed by Pappi Corsicato (Libera, The Seed Of Discord), the film offers an in-depth portrait of Schnabel, an enfant terrible of the New York arts scene who has a parallel career as a filmmaker, directing such features as Before Night Falls and The Diving Bell And The Butterfly.

Al Pacino, Jeff Koons, Bono, Laurie Anderson and Willem Dafoe are among the contributors. The film includes material from Schnabel’s own archive of home movies and photographs. »

U2 Honor ‘Lion’ Chris Cornell With ‘Running to Stand Still’

21 May 2017 11:25 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

When the lights went down at the Rose Bowl before U2’s performance Saturday night, it wasn’t for the band: It was so the speakers could blast Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” in tribute to Chris Cornell — and tens of thousands of U2 fans could sing along. Later in the show, Bono called the late singer of Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog and Audioslave a “lion,” and “beautiful, sweet soul.” He extended U2’s love to his “lioness” — Cornell’s widow Vicky — and their children. And then the band went into “Running to Stand Still,” their delicate, crushing ballad about the torrents of addiction. »
