Dark Horse Graphic Novel Polar: Came From The Cold Scores Big Screen Adaptation

22 October 2014 11:42 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Poor Constantin Films is clearly trying to deliver a hit, but minus the Resident Evil franchise, the company doesn’t seem to be having much luck as far as the domestic box office goes.  I don’t even know what happened to that ridiculous looking Tarzan animated movie they were working on, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones failed to spawn a franchise and Pompeii didn’t do too well either.  Perhaps a graphic novel adaptation could get the company a winner. It’s being reported that Constantin is joining forces with Dark Horse Entertainment to turn the graphic novel Polar: Came from the Cold into a feature film.  Hit the jump for more on the endeavor. According THR, Constantin preemptively snatched up Jayson Rothwell’s spec script for the project.  The Victor Santos penned and illustrated graphic novel has been in stores for almost a year now and focuses »

Constantin Film preemptively purchased the spec script for “Polar,” written by Jayson Rothwell.

Dark Horse published “Polar,” written and illustrated by Victor Santos, in November.

The story centers on Black Kaiser, a master assassin forced out of retirement when he finds himself the target of a crew of younger hitmen — which is at odds with the protective relationship he has with the child of one of his former marks.

Constantin and Dark Horse are out to directors with the aim of shooting in the spring. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer will be producing along with Jeremy Bolt and Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg.

Constantin released “Pompeii” earlier this year and German hit “Fack Ju, Goethe.” Richardson is currently producing “Tarzan” for Warner Bros. with Alexander Skarsgard, »

Constantin Film and Dark Horse Entertainment have pacted on noir spy revenge tale Polar, adapted from the celebrated Dark Horse Comics graphic novel Polar: Came From The Cold by Victor Santos. The action-thriller follows a master assassin named Black Kaiser who’s forced out of retirement by an assassination attempt by a crew of younger hitmen. Constantin sprung for a script by Jayson Rothwell (Malice In Wonderland, Silent Night) and with Dark Horse are now eyeing directors for a spring 2015 shoot.

Jayson Rothwell wrote the script for the project, which Constantin’s Robert Kulzer will produce with Jeremy Bolt (the Resident Evil movies) and Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg. Release of Nicolas Cage’s ‘Outcast’ Halted in China Hours Before Scheduled Opening

26 September 2014 5:06 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Hong Kong — The release of period action film “Outcast,” starring Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen, was halted in China only hours before a scheduled wide theatrical outing.

The film, a Chinese-French-Canadian co-production, was due to have been released Friday in China on some 26% of screens in the country, or more than 5,000 theaters.

Co-producer and sales company Arclight said that it was informed by email in the middle of the night by Yunnan Film Group, the film’s principal financier and Chinese distributor, that the release would not go ahead.

“The reasons for this are not clear. We simply don’t know if it is censorship problem, or something else,” said Mike Gabrawy, Arclight’s head of production. “Marketing and promotion have been done and money has been spent.”

Cage is not currently in China, though director Nick Powell and Christensen are in the country to support the release.

Nicolas Cage's Outcast pulled from China release

26 September 2014 4:24 AM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Exclusive: Arclight Films’ period action film Outcast, starring Nicolas Cage, was pulled from Chinese theatrical release last night, just hours before its midnight previews.

It remains unclear why the film, an official China-Canada-France co-production, has been halted. It was due to open wide today (September 26) ahead of the National Day Holidays, a key box office period in China.

The film’s Chinese distributor and co-production partner, Yunnan Film Group, informed Arclight late last night that the film would have to be postponed for reasons that the company couldn’t share at that moment. Arclight is handling international sales and has sold the film worldwide.

“We are completely baffled – as far as we understood, the film had been cleared by China’s censors for release,” said Ying Ye, head of Arclight’s Asian label Easternlight Films. “The film was so well received by all buyers who acquired it and even created a bidding war among Us buyers. We are »

Pompeii 3D Blu-Ray Review

24 May 2014 10:17 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Whether you have a good time with Pompeii depends entirely on what you demand from it. This historical disaster epic is loaded with CGI destructo-porn and thrilling action sequences, but falls almost unbelievably short in the heart department. For many audience members, that will be perfectly acceptable.

Anderson wasn’t aiming to make a profound, historically accurate meditation on the titular Roman city. Rather, his intentions for Pompeii should be obvious from the poster alone, which depicts gladiator Milo (Kit Harington) romancing noblewoman Cassia (Emily Browning) as Mount Vesuvius lays waste to everything around them. The idea of a film combining Titanic‘s doomed romance and Gladiator‘s furious action is what sold this film to the studios and then to audiences back in February. Still, what a shame, then, that Pompeii can’t even begin to hold a candle to either of those inspirations.

That’s not to say that it’s all bad. »
