“And the Oscar goes to…” is clearly the phrase on Universal’s mind today, now that the studio has dated Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken follow-up By the Sea for the very award-friendly date of November 13.

Written, directed and produced by Jolie, the romantic drama will also find her in the lead role, alongside off-screen husband Brad PittMélanie Laurent, Niels Arestrup, Melvil Poupaud and Richard Bohringer. Word has it that the filmmaker was inspired by European cinema and ’60s-era theater productions for the pic, which arrives with the following synopsis:

By the Sea follows an American writer named Roland (Pitt) and his wife, Vanessa (Jolie Pitt), who arrive in a tranquil and picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France, their marriage in apparent crisis. Universal schedules Angelina Jolie Pitt's 'By the Sea' for Oscar season release

7 May 2015 5:24 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

If at first you don't succeed… Last year's big Universal Pictures/Angelina Jolie (Pitt) prestige fall/winter release, "Unbroken," didn't exactly make Oscar season waves upon arrival. But the actress/filmmaker was hard at work on her follow-up throughout, so I'm sure that did a lot to take her mind off how many nominations the film wasn't receiving (and how many nasty things were being said about her in hacked corporate emails). And so she and the studio will give it another go later this year with "By the Sea," starring Jolie and husband Brad Pitt. Universal has announced that the film will be released November 13 domestically. Written, directed and produced by Jolie Pitt, the film also stars Mélanie Laurent, Niels Arestrup, Melvil Poupaud and Richard Bohringer. It follows an American writer named Roland (Pitt) and his wife Vanessa (Jolie Pitt), who arrive in a tranquil and picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France, »

7 May 2015 4:20 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

While Angelina Jolie Pitt’s supposed first foray into awards fare as a director, Unbroken, was a bit disappointing, Universal Pictures is nevertheless bullish on her follow-up. The studio has given a prime awards season release date to By the Sea, slating the film for November 13, 2015. Competition is scarce on the pre-Hunger Games weekend, where Jolie Pitt’s film will square off against the Warner Bros. miners drama The 33, the horror reboot Rings, and the comedy Rock the Kasbah. Jolie Pitt started production on the drama By the Sea before Unbroken was released, rolling cameras in Malta last summer. She stars opposite husband Brad Pitt in the film as an American couple who arrive in a picturesque resort in 1970s France with their marriage in crisis. They subsequently spend time with fellow travelers and come to terms with unresolved issues in their own lives. The cast also includes Mélanie Laurent, »

At this stage, the selectors of Cannes different sections have seen very little, so there is no such thing as a certainty.

Following some of the chatter and looking at which films might have the right credentials comes up with a strongly international selection for Thierry Fremaux and his team to choose from.
