In 1975 an artist named Chris Burden announced that he would lay down on the floor beneath a large sheet of plate glass on the floor of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. He did not say what he would do then. I covered that story for the paper, not because it was assigned, but because the concept held an eerie fascination for me. It still does. I have no idea what he was trying to prove. But, surely, he was proving something?
I recently had occasion to read The Hunger Artist, by Franz Kafka. It involves a sideshow performer who goes without food for long, long periods of time. This becomes a futile exercise, because while he's starving there's nothing much to see, and most people assume he isn't really starving; a man need only be thin to lock himself in a cage and say he is fasting. Edward Norton trounced his celebrity rivals in Sunday's New York Marathon, beating the nearest star entrant by more than 20 minutes.
The actor, running to raise money for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, finished in an impressive three hours, 48 minutes and one second - ahead of former E.R. star Anthony Edwards, who trotted home in four hours, eight minutes, and 20 seconds.
Christopher Reeve's son Matthew came in joint third in the showbiz race, crossing the line side by side with Strokes rocker Nikolai Fraiture after four hours, 23 minutes and 36 seconds. Reeve ran for his late father's charity foundation, while Fraiture raised money for a kids' cause.
Alanis Morrisette brought up the rear, finishing just five minutes later, clocking a time of four hours, 28 minutes and 45 seconds - also raising cash for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust.
Illusionist David Blaine and actress Teri Hatcher were expected to join their showbiz pals in the starting line-up, but pulled out ahead of the race - Blaine for unknown reasons, and Hatcher after coming down with laryngitis. »

After the easiest comic book costume options this Halloween, and beyond the moderately challenging and difficult outfits, there are a select few which qualify as impossible.
Based on anatomical absurdity and danger to the health and well-being of the costume wearer, the following five comic book characters would earn anyone bonus geek cosplay points for figuring out how to make them work.
1. Ghost Rider ("Ghost Rider")
In case you were distracted by Nicolas Cage's performance in the 2007 movie about this stunt man turned satanic dealmaker, his head is on fire, which is something friends usually don't let friends do to themselves. Granted, you could try to pull this one off without lighting your head on fire, but then you'd just be dressed like Skeletor... as a biker.
2. Basil Cronus ("Gødland")
This "Gødland" villain presents a conundrum because not only is his head completely surrounded by fluid; he also has no neck, »

Edward Norton has managed to persuade three Maasai warriors to ditch their traditional sandals for brand new sneakers as they prepare to run in the gruelling New York Marathon this weekend.
The Fight Club star will be joined by the Kenyan tribesmen when he pounds the streets of the Big Apple on Sunday to raise money for an African conservation charity.
The Maasai warriors have vowed to compete in their traditional robes and beads and had previously insisted on sticking to their open-toed sandals, made from rubber tyres, for the race.
Norton says, "They're very comfortable in those (clothes). That's what they walk and run in at home. That's just sort of their normal day-to-day wear, and they're really comfortable in it."
But Norton has finally convinced his new pals to run in comfortable footwear and take advantage of sports giant Puma, which is sponsoring the team.
The actor took them to a shoe fitting earlier this week (ends30Oct09) and he's hoping the warriors will take the sneakers back to Kenya with them and continue using the footwear.
He says, "The only thing they're still debating a little bit is whether to switch from their sandals to running shoes...
"The guys are getting outfitted for Puma running shoes. They usually run in those (sandals) but I think they might convert... They like their sandals and that's what they run in at home, but they had never run on pavement before, and so they're debating maybe wearing Pumas."
Norton's team will be joined by pals Alanis Morissette and illusionist David Blaine when they line up for the start of the race on Sunday. »

Other than funding, the biggest challenge for content creators is striking that delicate balance between narrative and brand. It's a fine line between integral and intrusive when it comes to developing a branded entertainment piece that simultaneously delivers the compelling stories audiences crave, and the measurable Roi brands demand. And everyone seems to be walking the tightrope in the sometimes futile balancing act between product messaging and story integrity. But, in the case of Altoids' new mobile and web series, Brainstorm, in partnership with Fox Mobile Studios and Omelet, the brand integration is anything but delicate. In fact, it's so heavy handed that it may actually border on genius. Set in the fictitious ad agency, Yogurt, who, in the premiere episode, we find battling a round of layoffs after a huge creative misstep with one of their recent commercials that, you'll see is more than a little suggestive, when played »

A further 440k (2.8%) watched the programme on Channel 4+1, then the documentary David Blaine: What Is Magic? had 1.61m (9.7%) for Channel 4 in the 10pm hour. David Blaine has laughed off reports he was rescued by lifeguards after a swimming stunt went wrong in New York on Sunday.
The illusionist ignored warnings not to venture into the sea around the Hamptons after Hurricane Bill narrowly missed the state over the weekend.
Blaine was allegedly out of his depth in the water and had to be helped to shore by two lifeguards - but he denies needing their assistance, insisting he made it out on his own.
He tells New York Post gossip column PageSix, "We just went for a little swim. The hurricane had subsided. I did swim back by myself. There were cameramen all around. If they (lifeguards) saved me, wouldn't there have been pictures?" »

David Blaine claims he didn't need any help from lifeguards on Sunday as he battled the huge surf in the Hamptons -- his reported rescue was just an illusion, he says.
"We just went for a little swim. The hurricane had subsided," the magic man -- who once held his breath underwater for 17 minutes -- told The Post's Beth Stebner.
Blaine, who was with some friends at Mecox Beach in Water Mill, ignored a warning to stay out of the ocean, roiled up by Hurricane Bill. He was escorted to safety by two lifeguards, who swam out »

At the end of our previous Weeds Session, we pondered why the Botwin clan, and specifically Nancy, were not taking day offs from their, um, non-jobs to patron a shooting range. The stakes in season five more than necessitate practicing self-defense across the board. And, c'mon, surely, Cesar has a few pistolas or an Ak-47 laying around and directions to a desolate, empty field. (Yeah. He probably has a couple hundred of them X'd on a blood-stained map.) And of course, it turns out we were right. Spoiler Alert: The episode that followed, number nine, "Suck 'N' Spit," saw bullets fly and connect. But rather than pop off return shots, the following episodes have seen the Botwins pop pills, pop bottles of beer in the pool...and pop up in Guillermo's cell to order a hit. After the jump, we'll discuss the latest developments from last Monday's ep, "Ducks and Tigers. »

Probably not, but with this sports and dance niche web series, Orlando Magic Dancers: The Journey, you get a behind the scenes look into the competition. The web series is produced by freelance producer, Jason Dewberry, and Orlando Magic Broadcasting. Dewberry worked with Magic for eleven seasons, and originally they did an interactive five-week series for TV, and then every year after they did a one hour special. Before streaming video and iPods, before Blu Ray and IMAX, there was only one way to see the sort of illusions we take for granted: stage magic. A strange combination of theatricality, science and hucksterism, stage magic set the precedent for the early cinema and — just as the book The Prestige suggests — was intricately involved in the harnessing of electricity and other scientific breakthroughs (Nikola Tesla thought of himself as a bit of an illusionist). But the most famous stage magician, Harry Houdini, focused less on sleight of hand (though he was adept at it) and more on escapology and will power. In a trick that later inspired the likes of David Blaine, Houdini spent part of August 5, 1926 in a "casket" submerged in the pool of the Hotel Shelton in New York. He stayed there for just over 90 minutes, besting one of his rivals by a half hour. It was »

If you’ve witnessed any episode of HBO’s “Da Ali G Show,” the 2006 film “Borat” or its upcoming spiritual follow-up “Brüno,” then it’d be very easy to come to the conclusion that Sacha Baron Cohen is a comedic chameleon without equal. You would be wrong though. There also a not-so-little somebody that may or may not have gone by the name of Andy Kaufman.
Like Cohen, Kaufman’s entire routine depended on the idea of deception: deceiving his co-stars and unwitting participants at times, but always shocking his audience in one form or another. The two entertainers had their own sets of characters but the alter-ego personas definitely share some common traits, if only in method and on a thematic level.
In 2006, Cohen broke out into the mainstream with his bumbling man-out-of-country character in “Borat,” a Khazakstanian journalist who travels to America in order to learn the secret ways of its populace, »
