Michael Rapaport, Lewis Black & more join cast of Woody Allen’s untitled Amazon Series

18 March 2016 3:00 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Woody Allen’s new Amazon series has just added some more talent. The untitled series has now cast Michael Rapaport, Lewis Black, Becky Ann Baker and a handful of others.

According to Deadline, little details are known about Allen’s new project, other than its being set in the ‘60s, its six half-hour episode makeup and — with the addition of Margaret Ladd, Joy Behar, David Harbour, Christine Ebersole, Rebecca Schull and the above-mentioned trio — its having a lengthy cast. Previously announced cast members include Miley Cyrus, Elaine May, John Magaro, Rachel Brosnahan and Allen himself.

While all seems okay now, Allen was previously having a difficult time with this project, going so far as to say “I have regretted every second since I said Ok. It’s been so hard for me.” The 80-year-old writer-director, who claims to not know what a streaming service is, recently confessed his inexperience with »

The weird, white cast of Woody Allen's new Amazon series just got weirder and whiter

16 March 2016 9:25 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The cast of Woody Allen's upcoming six-episode Amazon series just got bigger. According to Entertainment Weekly, Rebecca Schull, Margaret Ladd, David Harbour, Christine EbersoleMichael Rapaport, and, somewhat surprisingly, Joy Behar and Lewis Black will appear in Allen's mysterious show, the title and plot of which have yet to be announced. They'll join previously announced Elaine May, Rachel Brosnahan, John Magaro, and, very surprisingly, Miley Cyrus. In a world where Olivia Wilde, at 28, was deemed "too old" to play Leonardo DiCaprio's wife, it's nice to see some older actresses (Schull is 87, May is 83, and Ladd and Behar are 73) get work, and some of these casting choices are, on their face, intriguingly unconventional -- Behar, for instance, is best known these days for her hosting work (though she's also done a good bit of acting work, including in Allen's Manhattan Murder Mystery), while Miley Cyrus is Miley Cyrus (Hannah »

‘Inside Out’ Wins Pixar Its Eighth Oscar

28 February 2016 7:35 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out” won the Oscar for best animated film for director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera in what had been regarded as one of the awards season’s most likely outcomes.

“We are all so lucky, regardless of a gold man, because we get to make stuff,” an elated Docter said in his acceptance speech.

He added that “Inside Out” had been inspired by his own children growing up and concluded by urging the audience to embrace creativity: “You can make stuff. Make films, draw, write. It will make a world of difference.”

Docter even made use of the show’s new thank you scroll to announce a special treat for his kids. The scroll, which was introduced to provide extra space for thanking a winner’s family and collaborators, read, “I love you Amanda, Nick & Elie — okay yes, let’s get a dog.”

TV Review: ‘Madoff’

1 February 2016 7:15 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

ABC News’ fingerprints are all over “Madoff,” a four-hour miniseries chronicling Bernie Madoff’s financial high crimes. News footage (all from ABC, naturally) peppers the project, which is based on a book by correspondent Brian Ross. Yet despite a showy performance by Richard Dreyfuss in the title role, the production is mostly inert, exhibiting a somewhat antiseptic quality, and downplaying perhaps its most fascinating element. Those who invest their time in “Madoff” shouldn’t come away feeling fleeced, exactly, but given the inherent dramatic possibilities in the story, the return for viewers seems at best marginal.

Indeed, while ABC beat HBO to the punch, this production, from the Alphabet’s Lincoln Square arm (previously responsible for its short-lived drama “The Assets,” about CIA mole Aldrich Ames), should do little to temper anticipation for “The Wizard of Lies,” HBO’s upcoming take on the story, starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. »

Short Film Roundup Reviews: Head & Introducing Parker Dowd

22 January 2016 12:30 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

I love short films. Don’t get me wrong, there’s an infinite amount of things to love about features as well, but I’m in love with the idea of having to tell a story and invoke emotions and tone within a small amount of time, it impresses me very much and for each of our Short Film Roundup reviews, I wanted to shine the spotlight (so to speak) on short films I’ve come across that really stand out. The majority of them will obviously be genre shorts but don’t be surprised if you read about short films that play in the drama or comedy playgrounds as well, because really, why limit ourselves?

‘Misery Loves Comedy’ Review

In his directorial debut, Kevin Pollak signs on an impressive roster of actors, comedians, stand-ups, writers, and more, all to come together and answer one of the most dumbfounding questions known comedy lovers everywhere: do you truly have to be miserable in order to be funny?

Actors from Sam Rockwell, Bobby Cannavale, Matthew Perry, Nick Swardson, William H. Macy, Tom Hanks, Maria Bamford, Lisa Kudrow, and more were on film talking about comedy and how they came to it, as were writer/directors Jon Favreau, Kevin Smith, Judd Apatow, Larry David, Marc Maron, Lewis Black, and more. And of course, a large score of comedians were in attendance, such as Jimmy Fallon, Amy Schumer, Martin Short, Whoopi Goldberg, Christopher Guest, Greg Proops, Jimmy Pardo, Penn Jillete, Jim Gaffigan, David Koechner, Kevin Nealon, Rob Delaney, James L. Brooks, Andy Richter. And of course a whole lot more people that offer some »

Matt Damon Credits Sylvester Stallone for Launching His Career at Nbr Dinner

5 January 2016 10:19 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The National Board of Review dinner on Tuesday night in Manhattan doubled as a victory lap for an old Hollywood champ, as Sylvester Stallone was showered with multiple tributes. Early in the evening, Matt Damon—this year’s winner for best actor in “The Martian”—revealed that when he was shopping around 1997’s “Good Will Hunting,” the fact that Stallone starred in “Rocky,” after writing the screenplay, kept him from letting another actor from headlining his movie. “Believe me, they really wanted to take it away from us,” Damon said, as he credited Stallone with both his and Ben Affleck’s acting careers. He mentioned that studio executives thought, “God, Leonardo DiCaprio would be so good in this” of the screenplay he co-wrote. But, he added, “every time they said, ‘You can’t do this,’ we said, ‘It’s been done before.’”

Then came Stallone’s award for best supporting actor for “Creed. »
