Film Review: ‘Ironclad: Battle for Blood’

24 July 2014 10:34 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Only the fake-blood expenditure has been upped in “Ironclad: Battle for Blood,” an anemic sequel to 2011′s medieval slay-’em-up “Ironclad” that visibly scrimps in all other departments, from casting to effects to any semblance of humor. Essentially repeating its predecessor’s castle-siege narrative — minus the vague historical basis this time — writer-director Jonathan English’s dank-looking film delivers enough amputations, decapitations and other instances of rusty-bladed gore to distract undiscerning genre fans stuck between seasons of “Game of Thrones,” but serves no other obvious purpose. Granted a far smaller U.K. release than the first film back in March, the film now enters theaters Stateside after an initial VOD bow; if there’s any further life (or flamboyant death) in this franchise, it’ll be in ancillary only.

Unlike “Ironclad,” which notionally told the story of the 1215 siege of Rochester Castle, the sword-and-sackcloth drama in “Battle for Blood” (set six »

20th Century Fox and Platinum Dunes are teaming up for yet another reboot of the 1976 horror classic The Omen, which comes just eight years after the studio's The Omen remake in 2006.

No filmmakers have been attached at this time, with Bloody-Disgusting reporting that 20th Century Fox and Platinum Dunes are still in the very early stages of development.

The news comes just over a month after we reported that the Lifetime Channel is developing a TV adaptation of the original movie, with Glen Mazzara, a former showrunner on AMC's The Walking Dead, writing the pilot script and executive producing. The series centers on Damien Thorn, the young boy from the original movie, who is now an adult and haunted by his turbulent past. Ironclad 2: Battle For Blood Review

13 March 2014 7:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Writer-director Jonathan English got surprisingly lucky with the first Ironclad (2011) film, as it offered a thrilling/shocking blood thirst of video-gaming proportions, as well as an impressive cast, including Paul Giamatti, Brian Cox, Derek Jacobi, Charles Dance and the dashing James Purefoy. Still set in the harsh surroundings of 13th Century Britain, post the Great Siege of Rochester Castle, the second film, Ironclad 2: Battle For Blood, seems to have switched target audience, with a more youthful cast of mainly TV actors.

After the De Vesci castle home comes under attack from a band of marauding Celts, resulting in a critical body wound for the master of the house, Gilbert De Vesci (David Rintoul), his son Hubert (Tom Rhys Harries) is tasked with fetching his battle-scarred cousin, Guy (Tom Austen) to defend their ancestral home. But the bitter Guy comes at a price and with a band of reprobates in tow, »
